Night time supplementation? 18 November 2009 09:23 (permalink)
Hi All,

I need to stock up on Protein soon, and was wondering is it worth giving Casein a try, for bedtime use?
I had 3/4 teaspoons of Peanut Butter before bed last night and wondered if this is just as effective??

Diet is fine:
fruit, veg, cottage cheese, good carbs, protein, clean meats i.e chicken, water everyday, no fizzy drinks, glass of red ocassionally,
Training at least 3 times a week, an hour+ each session, training all body parts etc.

Thanks,

Casein would be a good option made.  Cottage cheese is another decent prebed meal.  I just can´t stomach it.

Yeah - I'm not overly keen on eating cottage cheese before hitting the sack.
Which is why I am contemplating using Casein before bed.

I'll still intake protein after workouts, but just thought a casein might be worth trying, to assist with gains. After some workouts, it'd be good if the muscles were fueled through the night.

I've never tried casein before - so it'd be good if it actually helps me in the long run.

      Thanks.

---Ok , just done a bit more researching,

and after seeing prices etc, I'm thinking to just dose my normal Protein shake before bedtime, except mix it with milk instead of water.

        Does that sound right?

adding milk will slow down the absorbtion time of whey, but i wouldnt have thought by enough for a full 8 hrs sleep.
micellar casein isnt necessarily expensive, it depends where you are looking really.
it is a little bit more expensive than whey, but if you only use it before bed, its going to last long enough.
          i drink 60g casein, 80g fine oats and 10g l-glutamine before bed.
calm down, its life, mate, its only a game

Why not just mix a nice tasting blend with milk? Peanut butter is hardly an ideal choice of food at any time I woudl think.

peanut butter does contain some nice EFA's and does slow down protein absorption, but like you say it isnt a great choice.

I used to eat frying steak before bedtime, 300g cut, with a full tub of CC, usually lasted me through the night even with my super fast metabolism, but the price of these items sky-rocketed so i switched to a decent Pre-bed blend which now works out much cheaper. Still dig into a tub of CC with pineapple every now and again.

                  Thanks for the feedback all.
I might just stick to my normal protein shake before bedtime, mixed with milk.
                  Ta!

get some casein, it wont break the bank. Depending on the flavour of your whey and casein you can mix them together for a 50/50 whey-casein shake to use before bedtime
