Anyone noticed the physiques in the latest Ultimate Fighter series?
-
18 November 2009 20:36
I know there is a fighting forum but I'm not discussing the fighting aspect of the show which is why I've posted in general. I'm quite disappointed with the physiques of most of the heavy weights in this latest season (season 10). I'm not taking anything away from their fighting skill but a lot of them could be in much better shape IMO. Anyone feel the same?

The_Goat Anyone feel the same? Not really mate. Most of them are in perfectly acceptable physical shape for a fighter Note how the most unfit ones are sometimes the prettiest looking, and vice versa

Just to expand.... If you were saying they needed to get more cardio fit then I would agree, most of them have been gassing But you're talking about looks, so I don't agree Fedor doesn't look like anything special

You mean fat boy Roy and titties? I think the standard of fighting/fitness was much worse than the physiques.

Plenty of fat people are fit, Geoff Capes was incredibly fit in his day, loads of rugby players and plenty of fighters. Bodyfat and fitness are not always connected.

I must admit I was surprised, many of them of them are pretty rounded, and one or two have a real gut. Apart from the black guy with the mad beard who is a monster (but he got his ass kicked by a chubby white guy)

Yeah I'm not for a minute saying that being ripped makes you a good fighter but surely if the fatter ones leaned up and replaced the fat with some muscle, it would just make them better than they currently are? I'm no fighting or boxing expert but thinking back to some of the heavy weight boxing champions, they looked awesome despite being heavy weights. I'm also comparing them to other contestants from previous seasons who seemed to have been in better shape.

Ironically the lad who probably has the best physique out of anybody that I know personally is an MMA fighter, the irony being he couldn't give a sh1te about how he looks in any way whatsoever!

Its not about being vain or wanting to look like a cover model but surely if they love fighting so much and they want to be better fighters then they would look in the mirror and think that there is room for improvement when it comes to their body in order to make them better fighters. CK's mate is a good example, he's not bothered about how he looks but he is bothered about being a good fighter which means he's in a good shape.

I can't say that many fighters in the UFC impress me at all with their physiques let alone the fatties on TUF10. Some of the top middleweights and light heavies look fairly 'average' by BB'ing standards.

not too fussed about their physiques to be honest.. im more disappointed with the apparent lack of ability and fitness that most have displayed so far!! those factors have contributed t make this series the worst one yet!! shame..

My two cents taking them or leave them Number 1 its fighting not poncing around in a pair of tight shorts for a camera there is no nescecity for them to be ripped up as they are in the weight class same as with strong man, so why bother cutting because its a hassle in all honesty, Number 2 There is proof to suggest that ancient gladiators were in fact fatties as the layers of fat helped protect against damage etc so therefore adding weight to the fact they can be fat and effective

Funny how hard man Kimbo got his arse kicked. A lot of muscle and he looks like a scary man. Yet chubby comes along and wipes the floor with him. I thought there were a couple of guys who looked in good shape in that series where they had a full on fight in the garden of the house. They were sat around having some beers and it kicked off. One of them got slammed on his head. One of these guys had a white t shirt on an was a big lad, he had a tattoo down the back of his arm, the tricep area and blonde hair. I quite liked his build.

to be honest tho ste, kimbo is a brawler, he isnt an MMArtist.. he's quickly learning tho, and for all the fat that ne,son carries, he's a top level BJJ practitioner.. he's beaten some top guys in the game before, so really, the only chance kimbo had was a knockout, but as it went to the ground, he obviously stood no chance wat so ever!

Because they are an athlete and athletes should :) In all honesty though, if the muscle is effective and the podge is not really hindering you then it shouldn't be a problem.

Mike Tysons build would not be ideal for MMA and for all you guys who are saying they gas just remember that bigger muscles need more o2 therefore of course they will gas quicker if they have pretty much the same lung capacity as smaller guys. NFL isnt exactly a hard sport fitness wise compared to mma you do what run for 30s then have a break as opposed to fighting for 5 mins without one. Agreed Roy Nelson is fcking disgrace because he is soo fat but he does have some slick ground skills.

Surely more muscle is better in any situation though? I'm not saying more muscle means you're a good fighter but if roy nelson for instance dropped to 12% bf and then gained muscle until he hit 260lbs, surely he would be a better, stronger fighter than his former self? I'll say it again though... I don't for a second believe that someone who is ripped is automatically a better fighter than a fat person.

Roy Nelson is the only one who 'looks' ridiculously out of shape, but he knows how to use that lard to his advantage and has looked one of the fiitter fighters in his 2 fights.

^^^ for nelson to drop to 12% then gain muscle to get back to 260lbs would take..... in fact, he could never do it! and that pic of sylvia is v old!! he did manage to turn his physique around a bit.. with thanks to steroids at some point also.. but that pic there he looks dreadful!! wasn't a good fighter really tho either.. arlovski has no chin, which is a shame as technically he's immense!

Yes Mr M but you get my point, an mma fighter with 20-30% bodyfat is a lot fitter then a bodybuilder with 4-5%!

Big muscles are a big hinderence in MMA. You're not as supple and a lock doesn't even have to be on that well for it to hurt like hell. Ok there's the odd few who get away with it (look at Brock) but MMA guys are usually in good shape due to the amount of fitness they have. Check out on youtube, Rich Franklin and Shaun Sherk training. You'll be panting just watching it. These guys have good builds, are pretty low BF but just keep going and going. When I trained there were a few BB'ers who came and yes they were a lot stronger and this helped to a certain extent but it wasn't that hard to put a even a sloppy Kimura or key lock on them and they were usually tapping before major torque had been put on them due to how big their delts were. Also a good point made above about how much more o2 muscles will use, heavily muscled guys usually gas very quickly.

I think there are a few that look like they are in pretty bad shape tbh. I think Big baby is a good example of the heavy weight class and his power and strength show for it. I don't know how good he is technically but there is no doubt he is bloody strong and he weighs the same as roy nelson. Just a better use of the available weight IMO.
