Thanks guys!

Bit of sabotage on Day 1. My girlfriend made Mocha Cake - and i've got to finish it by the end of the week. Im just glad im not cutting! Otherwise solid diet today, except a bit low on carbs (due to work and poor choice of lunch!).

On the plus side the back feels alot better. May start training legs again in about a weeks time.

Re:Jim's 2010 shape up (semi-clean bulk) - 09 January 2010 13:26
Back is taking ages to heal - its been well over 2 weeks now. No cardio at all

It was healing but then i aggravated it again when makng snowmen. Sitting/standing is painful, bending over is a complete no-no. Im in pain constantly. As soon as it improves im going to make sure i see an osteopath, and stretch everyday.

Despite contemplating pulling out of the SUC, i think my lack of cardio means im having to be more strict with my diet. Hopefully it will also mean a more anabolic status for building my upper body up, so i will persist for now.

My only cardio is walking to and from work - over 6 miles, appx 1 hour 30 mins total per day.

This is also the first week i have not drank any alcohol. I am by no means a heavy drinker, but i do tend to drink everyday. The only booze i have in the house at the moment is a bottle of Cachaca (sp?) and Tuaca. The plan is a drink on my GF's birthday, otherwise stay clean.

Its also the first week i have not had any junk food or big binges ( i tend to eat massive portions, and then be bloated for a few days afterwards). Being a chocoholic i usually have some in the flat, my only chocolate treat available is choc flavoured nesquick which i have occasionally.

So despite the back, things are looking positive.

Good luck

Cheers Kipster!

Week one has been good. Diet has been immaculate, no alcohol, junk, binges or chocolate. But training has been non-existent!

Had an awful back spasm on Sat, my body went lop-sided and its taken 48 hours to settle down. I'd say it was the worst pain i've ever had in my life, no understatement!
Pain is manageable now, so hopefully i'll be able to train later this week.

We have 20 litres of milk in the fridge so my diet this week will be mainly milk (!). Looking forward to a cheat meal tonight, perhaps a pub dinner :)

Re:Jim's 2010 shape up (semi-clean bulk) - 13 January 2010 22:11
Lol! Im not actually aiming to win this, but it certainly helps with motivation and a good old kick in the buttocks.

Back spasm alot better - went to work today and found it manageable.

Had a lovely cheat meal on Monday:

Starters - Herbed Gnocchi
Main - rib eye steak and hand cut chips
Dessert - Apple crumble

...polished off with a glass of Pinotage/Shiraz

Resumed normal diet Tues, and then a wee slip today - had two large muffins and some Quality Street sweets

Bit annoyed but glad i didn't binge, have a tendency to be very impulsive and not know when to stop. Might be seeing friends on weekend, will keep it clean but next planned cheat is the other half's birthday in a week.

Bodyfat measured today in gym using hand-held monitor: 19.8%

...bee interesting to see how much this falls at the end of the SUC.

Precisely! If your gonna cheat then cheat properly!

End of week today - back is feeling a lot better. Plan is to remove the back support i've been wearing and see how it goes. Starting to get some regular training in now, but still no cardio.

Diet has been a tad ropey this week. Girlfriend had made mocha cake again, ended up eating lots of coffe butter cream (!). Went cinema last night and had a few handfuls of sweet popcorn.

Next cheat is Thurs.

Bodyweight 88kg.

Mongolian BBQ was lush, a combination of:

Lamb/Beef/Chicken
Green curry/red curry/indian curry/thai curry
Lots of veg
Lovely fondue for dessert, ending up drinking someone elses melted chocolate too.

All yum

Took the missus clay shooting earlier today and now going out to dinner, followed by a pub lunch with her family tomorrow. I will update then to let you know about all the gorgeous treats!

Weight was 87kg today, feeling weak as a kitten

Re:Jim's 2010 shape up (semi-clean bulk) - 31 January 2010 16:52
This week has been awful. Lacksadaisical efforts in the gym and poor diet. Started with a small binge on Weds (several chocolate chip croissants and brioche) and then really regretted Friday - thought i'd treat myself with Fish and Chips, and then had pizza pre-cinema. Spent the next 2 days in bed with abdominal pain and nausea, no diarrhoea funnily enough. Things like this really put me off fast food.

So yesterday i had nothing to eat, two glasses of milk and some wholemeal toast.

Really need to focus this coming week. I have a drug rep dinner on Weds evening and im going to see Avatar 3D at London IMAX followed by a Gaucho (awesome Argentinian grill!).

Despite this crap weekend managed some cardio this morning, 30 mins run. Wondering if i should pull out of the half marathon? 2 weeks left to build up to some decent level of fitness...

start again tomorrow, take it one day at a time, get back on track that way.

With regards to the half marathon make a decision on that one a few days before. When was the last time you ran close to that distance?

Probabably at least 5 months ago i ran that distance, i've currently built up to 4 miles. Im one of those people whos determination exceeds fitness and somehow pull through. Got 2 weeks so still hopeful!

Yes, its an Argentinian grill. Very highly recommend it, especially if your a steak lover. Try their "churasco" steak, its marinated for 24 hours in herbs and tastes divine.

Jim

I've been married years and I'm not known for my social nature so that means I don't go out very much which helps on the diet.

I enjoy weights so never miss a session and was told at school I'd never achieve anything as I was a daydreamer. I'm still a datdreamer at 41 but it certainly helps when you need to zone out for long cardio sessions.

I have very simple food tastes and follow almost the same diet every day and don't get bored.

I'm also a creature of habit.

Those are my key attributes when it comes to staying disciplined.

I wish i had that discipline! I just love eating out (I started up the 'Restaurant Society' at university) and have absolutley no control around food portions.

Bit of a late update re: last week, have been quite busy. Diet was pretty clean all week, and then had a smashing treat at Gaucho Grill (400g churassco steak) with some cocktails and wine. Had a smallish binge this morning on chocolate croissants/twix/cadburys mini rolls but my weight is fairly stable at 87kg. I certainly feel 'smaller' and trousers are a bit looser.

Finding it hard to stay disciplined as the weight loss has stagnated, im very tempted to eat out the next few days or stay clean and then treat myself on Valentines

Update week ???

Things have been going well, i've been treating myself with daily coffees (just found a nice cafe around the corner from where i work) and this week had a McDs on Sat (don't ask me why, i was hypoglycaemic, honest!) and having some treats today, including chocolate, red wine and a curry later.

Dry body weight was 85.5kg yesterday.

Unfortunately the back has been playing up again, so will be taking cardio easy this week

I will therefore withdraw from the Half Marathon unless the back is massively better by thurs, which is annoying really.

Onwards and upwards!

Sorry its not looking good for Sunday.

My membership at David Lloyd is up at the end of the month, I can't justiy a 35 mile round trip to the gym any longer and going after work means I don't get home until 8.

I've joined a small gym closer to home which has enough for 2 of my weights workouts and when work calms down a bit I'll have a chance of training at lunchtime. I train chest on Saturdays and am going to train that at cheetahs when I'm down in Brighton anyway, its only £3.50 to train at there at weekends. Since Christmas I've only been using David Lloyd to train chest so that will be a fair saving.

Hope your back starts feeling stronger soon.

Sorry to hear about the back mate, been plagued with back issues over the years so know how you feel, it can be so frustrating.

Hopefully you will be back on form soon.
