I have restarted my TROG to help motivate me to get back into training and re-developing my physique in 2010.

My TROG profile has been updated and I have started the 2010 :: An James Collier Odessey II TROG at this post.

I had never really looked at the TROGS , looks like a good layout and good way of recording your thoughts/stats.

Good luck with your goals

I lost nearly a stone.  However, I have gained about 2lbs in this past week

Strength is akin to a 6 week old cute kitten

Re:My TROG - 2010 :: An James Collier Odessey II - 17 January 2010 14:18
Hi James,

Currently brushing up on my nutrition for an exam on the 31st of this month. If you dont mind I have a few questions in relation to my training and maybe others.

1. What are your thoughts on Glycemic Index (GI) on the influence or insulin levels and how it would effect fat storage. Also if there is a perticular time higher index foods would better be consumed.

2. Is 45 minutes of cardio long enough to activate lipolysis and would I be right in saying many bodybuiders assisted or not should complete longer than 30 minutes (which seems to be the common amount undertaken).

3. What are your thoughts on the 'zone diet' or 40:30:30. Is this the best way to break down each meal through the day for the regulation of insulin and fat storage.

4. With modern diets consuming more omega 6 fatty acids do you think more balance in consuming long chain omega 3's is more beneficial? or would you suggest consuming more monounsaturated fats?

5. In relation to the question above. Is it safer to take a supplement of fish oils than to consume potentially contaminated fish? ie rising river and sea pollution?

Thanks in advance James.

Hi Gordon.  In VERY brief as some of those require quite long winded answers

1) It is a useful concept to bear in mind.  Some articles here: http://articles.musclet...o.uk/articles-index.aspx Do not rely on it too much though.  It's more important than fat storage as it effects energy levels and appetitie which influence intake and therefore fat storage - more important here.  Higher GI foods, first thing or immediately PWO

2)Yes. Not always - it depends on so many factors - although more commonly you may be right

3) ****e.  And I don't do figures.  Eat food, not figures!

4) Yes and yes

5) Neither.  Anything is 'potentially' contaminated including this cup of tea sitting by me now.  If fish was really strongly likely to be contaminated then it's obvious go for fish oils which are definitely not contaminated.  However, the fish is unlikely to be contaminated so always go for the food.  Plus, of courtse, consider that fish oil supplements also have the 'potential' to be contaminated

Thanks very much James. Al continue my reading. I absoulutely agree with your point on my 3rd question. Meeting so many who say 'I eat 134g of this and 256g of this' and there obbsession over takes there enjoyment of what they do.

Again thanks for the answers.

Hi James
Thanks for the introduction and I am really pleased to a see you are already commiting to the exercises. While they are very subtle exercises the results can be quite profound – make sure you only press the muscle releases at 20% of your maximum effort, this is not a strength workout!!  We’ve been researching this for 25 years and screened over 4000 people, the same way I screened you, including people like Daley Thompson, Linford Christie, Kelly Holmes, the Formula One MacLaren racing team and many others and its helped them, so stick with it and see how you do.
I love being a biomechanics coach, I have certainly found a profession I love, and I never feel I have to work a day in my life!

Just read all your trog so far James, motivated me to start one of my own to keep track.. One thing I'd say though is stop putting yourself down for lifting lighter weights dude! - Your a warrior battling through what sounds like some pretty serious / long term injuries so patience is a virtue. The fact that your doing it at all and not just sitting around feeling sorry for yourself speaks volumes for your character imho

Hi Rach

Thanks for the post.

I am doing the 20% thing, but it does seem easy like this!  I just hope I am doing them right though - it was a lot to take in in one session.

Maybe we should set up your own Q&A topic for people to ask you questions on this?

Thanks!  I wouldn't say I'm putting myself down though, I am just as brutally honest to myself as I am with others.  I am also complimentary to myself where I feel I have earned it!  The last few months have been pretty negative training wise though, hence the absence of self compliments!

Comment retracted! ;)

Yeah it is always a lot to take in at first but I am keen to meet with you at least every 4 weeks to check your progress and techniques to ensure you get the best out of the programme.
The 20% thing is usually the one people find they are unsure of as it is so subtle but it is a superb way to release muscles that are in a sub clinical spasm.
If for now you can stay symmetrical and, dare I say, go lighter on the weights it will help your progress in releasing off your back and should hopefully result eventually in your ability to lift heavier again.
Q&A is fine by me!

i found it hard to get my head round at first!  were so used to 'feeling' exercises, or pushing harder to get better results, that its strange and really quite hard to adjust the mindset!

I'm happy to go lighter and volume train, I enjoy that

I have not been well at all.  My thoat is still swollen and I have no voice.  I haven't trained for over 2 weeks now and i can't eat well.  To top it all I had a diarrhoea and sickness bug on Monday which went into Tuesday, and yesterday I had stomach acid issues.  I can hardly eat a thing!  Health is not good and shows little sign of improvement.  As a consequence of sticking my head down the bog most of Monday, and being bent forwards when ****ting, my back was killing me; it's still sore now.

Health is not good. I can't eat, I cant train and I can't run my businesses effectively.

Re:The Bad Back TROG post - 04 March 2010 13:23
I did.  And he said that there's no infection on my lungs and I'm showing no other symptoms.  The cough is only in my throat (which is swollen).  Encouraged to contine with asthma meds and inhaling the Friars Balsam (already doing).  I do see his point, and the pathology is for sure pharyngeal inflammation.  However, what's causing the inflamation?

Looks like it's a case for Dr James to self treat!  Got a few ideas - starting today: I suffer with ulcerative colitis (UC) and when I get bad relapses I have been precribed Prednisolone which did the job nicely.  However, there are side and long term effects of Pred which means Drs are reluctant to prescribe it too often.  I got some myself last year .  Since before Xmas I've had a bit of a relapse of the UC which has been up and down, but I've been toying with the idea of restaring the Pred myself.  Obviously with Monday's escapades I've not had a good tummy anyway, but now that's cleared up I really considered the Pred.  I noticed that another medical indication for Pred is upper respiratory tract inflammation - there's my deciding factor - Pred to restart today to take care of both holes!! LOL

Pred is a harsh drug that some people can't tolerate: puffy face, water retention, acne and long term it decalcifies bone.  Others feel good on it.  Fortunatley I fall into the latter group - huge appetite (ideal after my recent crap appetitie), weight gain (I've lost over half a stone), energy.  I will supplement with vit D3 and calcium (additional) and I will keep the treatment short 7 for 5 days, then reduce by 1 pill every 5 days.  I do get the acne bad with it; so there's lots of back scrubbing from the Mrs, and the water retention should be kept minimal with dandelion root.

Aiming back to the gym on Saturday.
