It's a first shirt, I'll be competing in it in only a few weeks most likely, it doesn't need to be supertight.

Friday 18th April, Adlington

Slightly late start - 5:30 - and most people finishing up as I arrive.

Power clean first from floor, rest from hang, start next set before breathing has got back to normal
20x5
20x10
40x5
50x5
60x5
70x5
70x5
70x5
70x5
70x5 missed the last one here, did it again from the floor.

Tried hook grip on these, felt profoundly odd but I did notice the difference. The last few reps of the last set got kind of "army" as I lost my speed. Very hard work in a fitness way :).

Push press from racks for the first time!
20x5 moved my grip out a bit and hurray, sits comfortably on my collarbone
40x5
50x5
60x3
70x2
80 dumped without attempting press - the same old problem, could not get any air.

Interesting.

Speed Squats
20x5
20x5
70x5
115x2 roughly a minute to a minute and a half between sets
115x2
115x2
115x2
115x2
115x2 the last other trainer present goes
115x2
115x2 sweating again by now :).

Setting up by feel without looking down, then just looking down to check foot position. Was starting to get it right by the end.

Speed Bench
20x20
70x3 starting each set when the minute hand points straight up
75x3
80x3
85x3
90x3
95x3
100x3
105x3 take an extra minute, then:
110x3 start a set every 90 seconds from here as I'm ****ed:
100x3
90x3
80x3
70x3.

Benching can be cardio too :).

Very happy with this session: lots of work, most of it felt very good, under two hours from first set to last, absolutely shagged.

Monday 21st April, Adlington

Just trying to get some reasonable quality work in tonight. I picked up a little tweak on Friday night in my right lower back area basically coz I let myself get cold, I think, and more to the point I have a fresh new cold and so slept very little - so any kind of half-decent session is a win.

Squat in Z-suit
20x10
70x5
115x5
145x5 with knee wraps, ouchie
160x5 with belt (loose) also, hard work but very easy squats iyswim
160x5 more of the same, easy but I'm tired. Still, that's my raw PB, so it's not terrible.

It's nice in the suit and wraps, even if they do bloody hurt.

Deadlift in the suit as an experiment
60x3
100x3
140x3
180x1
200x1 very easy apart from the lack of air nearly making me grey out
220xf just not enough air to pull the damned thing.

Not sure about that. May need another try.

Thanks to Jeff for the loan of his wraps. I must get my own asap.

I wrapped them for me, not particularly well. I must advise you that, on reputations at least, Pete is fairly gentle in these matters.

Ah, no, it's my raw 5rm for a couple of easy 5s... sorry! Of course there's more to come.

Actually, I don't have a raw 1rm squat (or touch-and-go bench), I've doubled my best.

Wednesday 23rd April, Adlington

Late start, had to actually work until the end of the school day today!! We continue to learn the shirt.

Bench
20x20
20x20
70x5 Hayden joins me
90x3
110x3 Dr Sam joins us
125x1 the H-bomb hits a new pb :)
135x1
Titan NXG+ 56" on:
145x1 cool
145x1 better
145x1 best yet, time for a play
150x1 best touched weight in the shirt, "put some weight on that empty bar". I suggest 155, Phil looks at me like I've shat in his piano, so:
160x1 PB comedy easy
170 fail, ****ed up from the start, fell off line on the press. NICE catch by the spotters before it rearranged my skull.
150x1 long pause, incredibly easy press.

Many thanks to Phil for putting the shirt on, H-Bomb for being my shirt and belt adjuster, and Sam for doing far more than his share of the loading. First time I've had 170 in my hands; we should probably have jumped lighter, but the 160 was so easy that I was told to take 10.

Board press 3 boards, raw:
140x3
150x3 Millsy kindly stays to be my third spotter, with Joe and Sam
160x3 (PB) easy easy

Incline Smith Bench
60x5
80x5
90x5 Joe finishes and leaves, all alone now for the rest of the session.
100x5

Hang power snatch first one from the floor:
20x10
40x5 short rests of course.
45x5
45x5
45x5
45x5 gradually moving grip out each set and catching in a *slight* squat, these got better with every set.

Too tired for singles.

Superman Rows (in lbs)
50x8
100x8 I've been skiving off back/rear delt work, bad boy
150x8
150x8

Fin. 350lbs conquered, onwards and upwards next week.

My blue suede bench belt was much admired, not without sarcasm. I love it.

I have shirt stigmata on the arms, some marks from the suit on the upper legs, and a missing patch of right shin from where I deadlifted in the suit on Monday and forgot to put on the long socks. I am Jack's collection of flesh wounds.

Friday 25th April, Adlington

I've been absolutely knackered today and yesterday, but arrive at 5:10 pretty well up for it. Phil, Little Steve and Alan are all on their way out as I go in, Pete has just finished, Ian, H, Joni and Sam still training - just.

Power clean one from floor, remainder from hang
20x10 not moving
20x10 moving a bit more
50x5
60x5
70x5 lost the hook grip this set, just could not hold it today
70z5
70x5

And that's how the 5x5 on cleans is *supposed* to work. I just misremembered last time and wound up doing 5x8. Could not have survived that today. Might go up 2.5kg on these next week, or even 5 if they feel good.

Push press from racks
20x5
50x3
60x2 belt on to see if it helps me be solid and breathe
70x1 H diagnoses: I can't rack it on my delts so it's sitting on my collarbone in the middle, hence can't breathe.
75x1 moved my grip in to my clean grip, wrists wraps on to "cast" the hands, starting from under the chin. Better.
80x1 I think this is my best from racks
90 fail overoptimistic - I've barely pressed overhead since the Sugden meet, too ambitious.

Seriously reconsidering doing the overhead-from-racks meet - it's only three weeks out from the Lancs and Cheshire, and my overhead sucks incredibly badly right now.

I want to be at home. I'm on my own in the club, I'm completely knackered, and I'm annoyed.

Squat
20x10 don't wanna do this
20x10 really don't, I'm completely ****ed by now
70x5 moving a little
115x2
115x2 **** this
115x2 no really
115x2
115x2 if I quit it'll annoy me even more
115x2
115x2
115x2 **** off.

Speed Bench
20x20
20x20 moving like I've been dead a week
70x3 start a set every minute by the clock (not a minute's rest!)
75x3
80x3
85x3
90x3
95x3
100x3 drop to 90 second start times from after this
105x3
110x3
100x3
90x3 back to every minute
80x3
70x3.

That's cardio.

Man, I really didn't want to do that. But I did. I guess that's discipline, of a sort. Now if only I could apply it to my ****ty diet.

Monday 28th April, Adlington

Late in today due to after-school meetings, and apprehensive. I feel battered, and when I knelt down to pick up a pen earlier today it hurt so much I thought for a moment I'd ripped my quad. I think sitting through four films at the cinema yesterday may have let me tighten up a little...

Squat in Z-suit
bw x10x3 gradually moving feet out to full stance
20x5x4 gradually getting my hands around the bar.
70x5
70x5
115x3, wraps and belt on:
145x3
160x3
180x2 and a miss - ****ed the descent up badly, might have still made it post-hesitation but Rick quite rightly took the bar
180x3 PB that's better. It's only 5kg over my raw triple pb, but under the circumstances I'll settle for it. Solid, secure and not too hard.

Pulls from blocks it's an inch below the bottom of my kneecap, roughtly
140x3
180x3
200x3 (probably a pb, easy)
220x3 PB *not* easy. I actually failed the first rep, then found some bollocks and really worked.

I seem to just shut down when it starts feeling properly heavy. Need to man up.

Deadlift for speed and form
60x3
100x2
140x1 all very very fast
180x1 fastish
180x1 dog, dog slow - completely ****ed now.

Fin. Special thanks to Jeff for hanging around to spot. Really enjoyed squatting with Rick - he's a few kg better raw than I am geared, and makes a good target to chase!

Nice training lately Rick

I get that sometimes too; your mind playing tricks on you when the weight feels heavy. Happens to me with benching constantly

Excellent comp JB!

Cheers Rick. It all went to plan after a poor 10 days or so prior to it.

Are you doing the Lancs and Cheshire?

Wednesday 30th April, Adlington

Bench working in with Aaron at first, Pete later.
20x20
20x20
70x5
90x3
110x3
125x1
135x1
Titan NXG+ 56" on:
145x1 rubbish, forgot to press and hung about halfway up for an age
145x1 slightly better
145x1 done properly
155x1 not bad, not good
165x1 PB correct!
170 fail, line off mostly on the way up but also on the down
170x1 PB nice and crisp and easy. That'll do for today.

Board press 3 boards, raw:
150x3
160x2 and a fail, I'm an idiot
160x3 that's better.

Incline Smith Bench
60x5
80x5
90x5 had enough
90x5

Cardio time:

Hang power snatch first one from the floor:
20x10
40x5

45x5
50x5
50x5

Superman Rows (in lbs)
50x8
100x8
125x8
150x8

Fin. We'll look for a little more in the shirt next week, I think.
