How is Joe pulling the suit?

Up at the front?

Down at the front?

Down at the back?

Up at the back. He stands on a bench, grabs the straps at the back, and I sit into it.

Pulling it down hard at the front whilst arching your back works a treat for me.

Sets the suit nicely.

I shall definitely try that. You're a deadlift-suit guru, I'll try anything you suggest!

Wednesday 14th May, Adlington

Dragging a bit tonight on the way in, tired and slow.

Bench
20x20
20x20
20x20
20x20 finally moving
70x8
90x5
110x3
120x3
130x3 doing a bit more work tonight
Titan NXG+ 56" on:
150x3 PB pretty much by default
160x1 probably the nicest rep I've ever done
167.5x1 screwed up a bit but easy as pie. Alan: "take one more heavy rep for a PB, just one." OK:
177.5 fail, brought it down beautiful but was just too tentative. This is there for the taking.
160x2 PB probably more there but didn't want to risk finishing on a miss.

Board press 3 boards, raw:
150x3
160x3
165x3 PB absolute cake. I think I'm beginning to get used to supporting the weight.

Hang power snatch first one from the floor:
20x10
40x5
45x5
50x5
55x1 and the tank abruptly runs completely and utterly dry. HOME.

Friday 16th May, Adlington

Power clean First from floor, others from hang
20x10
40x5
50x5 Alan is taking an interest and my form improves correspondingly
60x5
70x5
80x5 PB really very pleased with this, much better receiving position these days.

Intervals between sets increase dramatically from here on as I'm tired and worn and dragging badly.

Speed Squat
20x5
20x5
20x5
20x5
70x3
70x3
115x2
115x2
115x2
115x2
115x2
115x2
115x2
115x2

Speed Bench
20x20
70x3
75x3
80x3
85x3
90x3
95x3
100x3
105x3
110x3 long pauses this set only
100x3
90x3
80x3
70x3.

A long, slow session but a good one. Much interesting and worthwhile discussion at the end with Joe and Big Phil about the future of powerlifting at Adlington. A plan is formed. I can't wait.

Tony - no mate, I have been finding overhead pressing painful since I had a slight shoulder tweak a few weeks ago, so I'm not risking it until after my PL comp on June 8th. I'm astonishingly ****e out of racks anyway, so no real loss! I'll be there of course.

Keenan - no idea! I do them because I enjoy them, and tbh a bit more explosiveness is never going to hurt. I suspect it does my deadlift no harm that I'm pulling a bar off the deck in three sessions every week, either, but I don't do them primarily for PL assistance, just for conditioning and fun.

Kept score today at the Adlington Overhead Challenge. Results, from memory:

tony b 100 pb
joni p 125 pb
tony h 130 pb
tony morgan 137.5 cpb (from the floor, too, not the racks)
mick ashurst 145 pb
john fairclough 150 epb
jeff williams 165 cpb
mark felix 182.5 epb
andy littler 187.5 cpb I think
mark clegg 210 epb

"pb" denotes all-time PB, "cpb" comeback PB, "epb" equal all-time PB.

Not a bad day's lifting, then.

Monday 19th May, Adlington

A bit later down than I planned and a slow start when getting there left me squatting late.

Squat in Z-suit
bw x10x3 moving feet out each set
20x5
20x5
65x5
110x5
140x3
160x1
180x1
200x1
210x1 (equal PB) ludicrously easy.

Would have done one more but unfortunately train timetables (and my own running-lateness) caused me to run out of spotters. Not having done another will cost me nothing at the comp of course, and my confidence is sky-high now.

Deadlift in Z-suit
60x3
100x3
140x3
160x2
180x2
200x2 (best in suit) again stupefyingly easy and comfortable with breathing too. Think I've got the hang of this now.

Was strictly warned against heroics on deads by Joe so left it there. Very, very happy. Also my car is not under a tree and has no **** on it, PB.

Huge gratitude to Aaron, Jeff and Pete who stuck around well beyond the call of duty to help me. All three of them squatted rather splendidly themselves. Roll on monday night unity in shiny new racks!

Nice work Rick! Onward and upward!

How much support do you get out of that z-suit?

They tell me it's not all that much - I'm always being told that people can't believe how thin the material is, and I can put the straps up myself easily. I feel like it helps me stay more upright, mostly, which is a huge benefit, and it definitely helps me off the deck in the deadlift. I think a lot of the squat help is from the wraps though.

I can sit to and then on a below-parallel (IPF) box with the suit on and straps up for a rest (obviously it's more comfortable with them down) - so it is not giving me *too* much!

It'll be interesting when I finally climb into a properly-sized centurion :).

I've got a friend who squats in a z-suit once in a while (he usually competes bench only of Ironman, but when he does full meet he uses a z-suit). He said it feels like a painful singlet haha

You'll put up some damn big numbers in a real suit!
