Beginners strongman -There may be hope yet! - 26 October 2006 10:55
Hi guys,

Speaking tro a few guys in someone elses journal about holding a little meet for beginner strongmen to meet up and have a crack using some strongman equiptment.

Tom from strongman equiptment has very kindly offered us the use of some equiptment on the day, all we need to arrange is a date/venue.

We are looking at summer 07 around the Devon area as this is where Tom is based. I will personally organise a venue/date sometime soon as well as provide a bit of grub/drinks for everyone (number dependent as im not made of it lol)

Also any advanced strongmen that would be interested in attending are also more than welcome to hepl out advice and show us newbies how its done.

Im not really into strongman directly but LOVE the big compounds, and wouldnt mind trying my hand.

If your interested im taking a list of possible suspects, copy and paste plus add your name if your interested plus state if your a newbie like us or there as a advanced/pro

Wogihao ( sorry for the hijacked journal )

I'm in! I competed in the Severn Valley novice comp this year but definately need more practice! Didn't do brilliantly

I live in Exeter and can probably put up a couple of people if anyone's unable to get back on the same day.

All the best

I'd be up for that

Next summer is a fair way away though so god knows what I will be doing then. Not even 100% sure where I'll be living to be honest! Currently in Cornwall but planning to move

If you bump this nearer the time mate that would be cool. I might be able to tag along

It's a great idea to introduce lads or ladies to the sport who may not consider entering a regular comp, Weights will be light so everyone can feel confident about making the grade on the day.

I'm in North Devon but I'm happy enough to travel so don't worry to much about the location.

With regards equipment; Just let me know what events you would like to try. As a suggestion:

* A Medley - Yoke carry and sled drag back
* Farmers walk - 50 mtrs one turn
* Overhead press medley - Barrel , Log, Axle, Viking press - Any order so you get a chance on them all.
* Loading - Assorted objects
* Silver dollar deadlift - using proper boxes
* Hercules Hold

Just a suggestion that I can supply all the kit for, If you lads want to see something different then say

I'm also sure we can pull in a few experienced seasoned competitors to instruct / help on the day

Depending on my personal circumstances closer to the time, I'd be happy to come and referee?

One other thing, May I suggest you make this earlier in the year , say Spring time. I say this because if any of the lads like the taste of this then you will have a summer of regular comps that you can then have a go at.

Tom your offer gets better and better! The suggestions on events sounds fine to me havent done any of them bar the farmers walk though like i said more squat/dead/bench stuff but would be great to 'have a crack'.

Weights will stay light, all welcome to sign up and have a go. os far:

Springs no problem for me, just would have liked a bit more time to develop my girlyman log lift.
How about connans wheel?

I dont mind where its held (with in reason) will make a long weekend of it and take the wife on holiday.

If we can get the events sorted asap as if its in the spring theres only a few months to prepare.

big thanks to Tom, you are indeed the man!

and also thanks to you guys that thought up the idea!

Oh yea my training partner would be intrested in giving the comp a go.

Do you think it would be possible to throw some stones in there? Maybe as the last items in the loading event? Did the stones once before and loved it - although my arms were killing for weeks afterwards!

Yea but I for one, have never tryed them. I dont think i could get anything over 90kg. what stones would be used? Im not sure you can get stones light enough for it to be competitive. It would be no good if a guy busted his balls to lug the stones over to the venue for us to use only to see them sitting there unlifted.

Van halen - Tom has alot of equiptment to bring mate, think the stones are a bit much TBH but see what he says.

Wogi - Baby due in April mate so springs out. Will be Summer June/July 07 if that ok? I will also be making a long weekend of it mate and I think devon way would be nice to go as:

a - Nice place, everyone can make a long weekend of it
b- Tom the man has done enough for us already and expecting him to travel halfway accross the country IMO is taking the p1ss a bit.

so far: ( let me know if you cant make devon direction please )

RE: MT beginners strongman - 26 October 2006 15:01
this is all sounding great. im pooping my nappy now though. 3 months out has shifted me back to toddlers rattles for weights at the mo. and im not even a real lifter, but id love to give it a go, should i be able to make some decent catch ups by the time its scheduled for.

if it is down south west thats about a 6 hour drive for me so if anyone could suggest a cheap place to crash my head near the location then that would be great as i dint think id have the energy for getting there, bursting my b0ll0cks and getting home again the same day.

I was wondering about your baby issues Andrew! another cause to celebrate when we do meet up! haha Im looking forward to the food and drinks more and more!

Summer is fine for me, im in japan for 3 weeks in march so on reflection spring wouldnt be ideal.

Barnstaple and the area around it is quality holiday material. lots of shops in the center and the senery is great. (when there for a holiday as a kid a few times)

6 hours glenn , well as i rember the b&b aint to shabby didnt cost alot. some of us are planning on makeing a long weekend of it anyway, enjoy the countryside.

im in Dagenham mate. about 12 miles out of central London. yeah that wouldnt be a problem jumping in mate. makes much more sense to hitch down there together. also, ill make sure weve got a mini fridge on board for all our grub we will need to keep us fueled for the comp. lol
