My second day of feeling positive so I hope I can milk it while it lasts . Trouble is most of it's going to be used on getting my assignment done.

Had a good session at the gym this morning. I decided to take a different approach to legs today. I also decided to do hams and quads together to save me some valuable time for the afore mentioned assignment.

After reading a few comments from the other females about squats and thicken waists I thought I might try the approach of not squatting every week at least. I don't squat very heavy so I don't think I'll be losing out. I can however, when I get my head round it go reasonably heavy on the leg press. We have the hammer strength leg press which works each leg individually. I decided to do 4 sets on this with my feet positioned higher on the plate than I normally do, in fact any higher and I'd have come off the platform. What a fabulous feeling, I still felt the push in my quads but also felt a much better hit on the hams and glutes. These are the areas I feel I need to work on more than my quads so perhaps a good move.

I was then about to go and do my lunges when someone decided to deadlift. How dare they! I could hear the smith machine shouting, "try me try me". Being an anti smith machine person I decided to give it a go at least rather than waiting for the bar. Wow, is all I can say, why have I not done these before, they targeted the glutes much better than my usual lunges and I managed just under 20kg per side which I didn't think was too bad for first attempt. I just ahve to remember to tie my laces tighter as my rear foot kept coming out of my trainer

SLDL finished me off good and proper and walking up the stairs out of the gym after was quite an ordeal. For the first time in ages, my legs were shaking. It felt great

Got home, took dog out and then did my CV.

I started to take the H&B Xtralean again yesterday just for a little boost of energy. I feel I've not been getting into the morning training properly so far and whether it's a placebo effect, or the stuff is really working or it's my new found positive attitude I'm not sure, but somethings working for me right now. I'm only taking one first thing as I need to work myself up to having the extra caffeine and I don't want to be losing sleep as I normally do when I start on these. It didn't stop me last night so I'll do this for four days and then up the dose to two caps.

Good luck Kitty. Will be a good journal, I'm sure.

You don't really believe moderate rep sets of squats thicken your waist, do you?

I'm not sure to be honest (I'm probably after an excuse not to do them ). I do tend to push my stomach out a lot on the upward part and I'm sure that could have some bad implication for a female BB especially when we need trimmer waists than you guys. Malika reckons she put on an inch on her waist last year, and gymbabeliz has said the same.

Did they do good mornings, ab work, deadlifts, bent over rows etc etc as well?

I only ask because we have a few wasp-waisted heavy squatters at the gym (Mr Europe finalist Dave Basinski for example) who is a 5 plates a side squatter and has a tiny waist and obliques. Off-season he's under a 30 inch waist (TT will verify - he knows him too) but is a real compound lifter.

I personally believe extensive direct ab work will thicken the waist, particularly obliques, more than squatting does. If anything, given the anthropometrics of squatting, it would surely have a bearing on hip-splay and not ab tissue hypertrophy?

I'll shut up now.

Not sure rightyho. As I said I don't squat heavy anyway, in fact I've only been using 60kg for the last few months , I'm not going to build much with that so I was thinking about trying to focus on the pressing for a length of time.

However, they is a new gym opening this year sometime near me and knowing who is going to be running it, they are likely to have a squat rack so I may be tempted to try them again

Will be reading your journal Kitty

Do you know what, I really do believe that YOU DON'T HAVE TO SQUAT to put more size on your legs.
& since I stopped, my knee doesn't hurt anymore...
I do loads of lunges(love them) in different ways, & they do work for me!
(in fact since the Britain I changed the way I trained legs & used Kim's advises & Serge Nubret's training principal: my legs are still growing since the Universe).

I'm not saying stop squatting, but you don't have to do them all the time...

Good luck on your prep' Kitty: stay strong!

Thanks Malika, I have started to notice my knees a hurting a little too. I have a bakers cyst behind my left knee and I'm sure squatting affects that (squeezing it into the surrounding tissues). I'll not give them up altogether by any means. I do like to squat especially when there are some plebs in the gym

Gemma, thanks, maybe you were part of my positive trigger
