Do you think that people have a stereotype for a muscular person? Do you think that this is a negative stereotype, and if so, do you think it has affected your job or life in any significant way?
I work in the IT industry, client-facing, and I kind of feel that if I had any kind of serious size it would affect my job prospects through two paths. The company might not want me client facing for image reasons (not so sure about this but I wonder), but also through maybe a kind of size jealousy.
I haven't experienced these things, apart from meeting a general lack of understanding as to e.g. why I have to go to the gym instead of hang out with my boss. I wonder how much of an issue size-ism is/can be?

Some companies also wouldn't want their clients feeling intimidated (which a very muscular bloke can be, to some)

I am not as big as i was about 7 years ago,but i think people seem to give you a bit more respect.Size definately intimidates some people,and combined with my shaven head i did look quite the thug.
Never affected my job or anything,just did not get people getting lary or anything.

never had any problems so far with it, but i can imagin that some companies wouldnt was jay cuter working on there cusomer help desk etc...

Me too - and thanks to James have gone up two shirt sizes whilst bulking this year... nowing weighing in at around 15 stone...
Upto now no problems with my job / colleagues etc.. and TBH I would try not to see it as a issue... I've just been offered an promotion - so it doesn't seem to cause myself any problems.
Just my take on it

I think people will also assume your dim.
the usual, hes big, hes a bouncer type of thought comes up.

People always judge each other on appearance
But I don't think being large would have a negative impact on your job performance if you are dealing with customers. In fact it could sometimes be beneficial, as the customers may be more likely to see you as an authority figure

No it's not an issue for me, just thinking ahead on what the effects might be if I decided to really pile on some size.
O/T: Pip you were asking for pics, here's me in 2001 untrained (about 10 1/2 stone), and again now in 2007 mid-cycle (13 1/2 stone).
Edit: end of 2005, before first cycle (11 stone 4).

Nice improvement mate,but i think you could have got to that size without steroids and with a good solid diet and training routine.
Not having a pop mate,just stating my opinion.

Initially yes it can be an 'issue'.
Once you talk to people they are normally much more relaxed about it all and 'size' doesn't really matter.
I can't see it being much of a problem in an interview provided you have the brains to match the brawn.

Totally agree, I added me pre-steroids in 2005.

People do look at you differently when you are larger, when I used to do temp work (office/admin), if I went into a new agency usually the first question about work was 'Are you looking for security jobs?', the trick is not to live up to the labelling and stereotypes of joe public, even if people might feel a little intimidated by my appearence, when I start talking to them and they realise I am not some moronic thug their attitudes usually change.

I work in a IT job which has client facing parts to it, i meet people fat, thin, tall and short, end of day intimadation doesnt come into it, there is a job to do so i get on with it.
I deal with a lot of high profile clients and to be honest there not interested wether i lift weights or spend my evenings eating burgers at maccie ds they just want there IT equipement sorted.

im no where near big enough to be intimidating but i think there is a steriotype big and strong but not very clever is one  unfortunatly i have heard this said but usually from skinny jelous people

I felt like I had the plague today when I went swimming today - dunno it was because of me or because I had my little one with me on my own but to say I got stared at all by all and sundry is an understatement ]
As for the job part, I'm the boss of a sales team so it helps keep them in line

Years ago, a friend of mine, 17 stone, excellent physique, wanted to be an actor. The advice he got was to lose weight as casting directors would only ever cast some of his size and shape as a bouncer/minder/thug/gangster etc. Of course there was no reason why he could not be cast as a dentist or an accountant or a fishmonger. But they wouldn't. That is the real problem, that these stereotypes are reinforced in every film and TV series ever made.
