Hi mate, thanks for posting in my journal. More than welcome to keep dropping by. Let me know how you get on with 5x5, I'm interested to hear about any concerns you may have or what your feedback of the routine is. I love 5x5, but have a niggle with it. Interested to hear your thoughts. Looking in good shape mate. Will be interested to see how the cut goes, best of luck!

Hi mate, All looking good - nice progressions. Do you have the opportunity to weigh yourself before doing the B/W exercises (Dips, Chins) as you can then record an 'all-up' weight. I find this figure useful especially as my bodyweight/clothing can vary from one week to the next. Or maybe I'm just a bit too fussy

My clothing is normally the same but my BW can be a couple of kg either way too.

Cheers mate Hi mate. I started typing out what the 5 x 5 is but this explains it better than I was going to: http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/m_8817/tm.htm Like it so far. It feels good to go back to basics and concentrate on strength for a bit. Very simple to do and remember too. I have a couple of bits in the house but I like to go to the gym for cardio. It's a bit of a mentality thing for me where I can switch off to everything else once I'm there, also at £50 per month I like to get my monies worth

I've been bigging you up in the General forum so I thought I'd extend the compliments to you in your journal too. The shot from the front (hands clenched) does the most justice to your improvement, your traps especially. Considering the lack of training to get from where you were to where you are is also worthy of a mention. If your progress continues in similar vein in the "Get Shredded" challenge then I'll expect to see some decent After shots in 3 months too.

I'm doing well thanks mate, hopefully in line for a promotion at work so fingers crossed. I think I'll always be more of a pusher than a puller but I'm getting better at chins. Keep at it, it wasn't too long ago that I couldn't do any chins at all let alone wide grip. It's a bit of a joke that I can bench press more than I can squat but I'm working on it.

I've put a bit of fat back on since the end of the shape up as you can see from the recent pics but the diet hasn't been great so it's to be expected. Personally I was more pleased with the front double bicep because it shows the fat I've lost from my chest/armpit area which is what I was after. I agree with what you say though that it's so much easier to see someones progress when they're cutting as opposed to bulking. I did comment in your journal at the time, I thought you made excellent progress.

I've always struggled with squatting but after giving box squats a try since about February time, the weights been rocketing up. I still struggle at normal back squats but as I go to the same depth each time on the box (almost parallel), I'll continue doing them that way. How do your Squat v Bench figures stack up then?

Hard to say at the moment mate as I don't flat bench in the current routine but I did a 1RM 125 KG for flat bench just before Christmas. I tried 130 straight after but was nowhere near. It's nothing compared to a lot of people's but please remember I am an old, totally natty recovering alcoholic . I'm having to use a Smith machine for squats but it's that or nothing, going for 110 kg 5 x 5 tonight, I didn't think I would be saying that a month ago.

125kg is possibly not as much as Mobster's 180kg bench, but then Mobster's is not as much as Jason Ellis' 240kg bench, which in turn is not as much as Martin Green and so on. You're lifting more than you were previously so it's all going good. Can't ask for more than that. So do you bench in the Smith Machine too or do you have an Oly bench for that? Squatting in the Smith for me has never been comparable to using an Oly bar so it's difficult to draw a true comparison. Providing the workload is increasing over time and you keep the booze in check and diet sorted, good things should come. (I'd have thought 110kg 5x5 should equate to more than 125kg 1RM?)

No, the only thing I use the Smith for is squatting, like I say it's that or nothing, well leg press anyway, which for me dooesn't compare. There's no squat rack or even stands and no chance of the gym getting any, I could move to a more hard core gym easily enough which would also be cheaper, but the good far outweighs the bad there.
