Mick the Brick - cheers, I guess a little more bulking required...like around 2 - 3 years?

Neb - thanks, I don't actually use the bike much myself - although I teach Spinning on a Sunday morning, I get a few clients on it now and again - it's the only bit of cardio kit I have at home.

I think I may have come to something of a plan tonight...

TBH, I struggle little with the 'bulking up' thing as it's a bit non-specific - as 40p said, "when you get to 90kg - what's next?" - the thing about bodybuilding is it's all very subjective

So, starting next week, for 12 weeks I'll be following Frankie's 5 x 5 with the following goals:

Bench Press 120kg

Squat 160kg

Deadlift 180kg

All to be achieved by the end of June.

I've been watching a few powerlifting clips on Youtube with Mrs S (aka Puss in Boots) and we were both quite inspired.

I'm even considering packing up the booze for the 12 weeks to give myself every chance at achieving my targets.

Sounds like a plan? - I think so

It seems we've gone in opposite directions weight wise but come to the same conclusion, what next?
I'm looking at Frankies's 5 x 5 for now but I'm going to have a couple of days to see how I feel.
I've lost a fair bit of strength doing this cut and I miss the heavy weights.

Had an odd couple of days really - been away on a course for 2 days - the second of which (yesterday) was my birthday so haven't trained.
However, had a good strength type session this morning, PB'ing on Squats and Deadlifts

Squats
20kg x 20
60kg x 20
100kg x 10
120kg x 6
130kg x 1 - PB - bit of a struggle, but fairly sure it was 'regulation' depth

Deadlifts
60kg x 12
100kg x 10
130kg x 6
150kg x 1 - PB - Mrs S videoed it - a little 'backy' but it went up okay

T Bar Rows
20kg x 12
40kg x 10
60kg 4 x 6

WGC's
1 x 6 - just to prove I could still do them

So, it gives me a couple of new benchmark lifts to build from - I would really love a 500kg total by the end of the year - who knows?

Sam

Good solid workout Sam
Is this the shape of things to come or are you still looking at the 5 x 5?

Sorry mate, just read back where you're not starting it until next week, please ignore me.

Yeah 40p,

I start my 5 x 5 on Monday with a 'push' session.

I may even take another 3 day break until then and start the new regime really fresh and eager

I would guess I've had a somewhat catabolic weekend!

I ran twice yesterday with clients as well as teaching a one-off Spinning class - the theme was 'School Disco' so it gave me a chance to dig out loads of real cheesy 70's and 80's stuff

I then did my normal two 45minute Spinning classes this morning. Now very tired but looking forward to starting my 5 x 5 with a 'push' session tommorrow. I don't imagine I'll be very strong but at least it will be a base - 12 solid weeks start tommorrow...

What's your push session looking like for exercises Sam?
I'm doing push tomorrow also.

I didn't know there were themed spinning classes! If they did an eighties one up my way, I would be there like a shot complete with shoulder pads, blue eyeliner and Carol Decker hair (I loved that woman!).

It was the first 'themed' one I'd done.

Really enjoyed putting the playlist together and sorting out the 'choreography' - the participants were almost all regulars and they loved it - especially the hand-jiving to 'Greased Lightning'

At last I've started my 5 x 5 and had a real good one to start:

Push Day

I'll just list working sets to keep it simple

Flat B/B Bench Press
90kg 5 x 5 - will go to 92.5kg next week

Standing Military Press
60kg 5 x 5 - only just got them - will stick with 60kg next week

Weighted Dips
B/W (92.8kg - clothed) plus 5kg 4 x 5, 1 x 10 - will go to 10kg next week

Loved it, real simple, now nothing until Wednesday - Legs day.

Sam

Good solid workout Sam.
That's what I like about this routine too, nice and simple.
I've already got in my head what I'm going to try to do Wednesday (pull day for me), I've not done that before.
Good luck with it mate.

Legs today 5 x 5 stylee...

Working sets only:

Squats
100kg 5 x 5 - good depth

SLDL's
100kg 5 x 5 - no gloves, chalked hands

That's it!

The programme says only to include Calf Raises if Calves are are seriously lagging bodypart and I don't think mine are so I didn't

The hard work will be next week when I have to try and increase the weights

Injured again!

Halfway thru' my Deadlifts felt a slight niggle just under my left Pec - carried on regardless (of course) only to severely pull a muscle in the left side of my ribcage - intercostal I guess.

It is now very painful - I can barely breathe - what's more I have 6 clients to see over the next 24 hours

Beginning to seriously wonder whether I'm cut out for lifting weights - just too bl00dy fragile I think...

More later

Sam

That's unlucky Sam.
What is it a case of trying to go too heavy on your first pull session or was it a weight you had done before?

40p,

The weight was fairly comfortable for me - 120kgs - I thought I'd give myself plenty of room to increase it over the coming weeks.

I really don't know what caused it - possibly poor form on the SLDL's on Weds? - no idea really.

The thing is with my PT work I really can't afford to be injured - just struggled thru' a running/boxercise session with a female client - got a big, strong male client coming over in a minute who hits a lot harder

Might need to re-think the 5 x 5 thing and go for a quick cut instead

I'll just watch you do yours

Sam

That's a real shame Sam, like you said we are similar in strength on some things and I was looking forward to trying to catch up on the others, oh well another time.
Good luck which ever way you decide to go.

Thanks 40p,

TBH, I think it's unrealistic for me to do a strength/size routine when I'm now doing so much cardio with clients - I ran 3 times on Saturday with 3 seperate clients and then taught 2 Spinning classes back to back Sunday morning.

Maybe a 'casual cut' is more realistic

Sam
