nice journal will keep an eye on this one mate :)
always wanted to know how fighters train with weights as well as normal training.
im looking to start getting into ju-jitsu and muay thai as well, always loved watching it.

how are you finding the carbs with your energy levels?
is it affecting just your weights or your bjj training as well?

you planing to cut back on the kicking for a couple of weeks pre-match to let your rib rest a bit?

hey mate, thanks for dropping in
i love answering questions so fire away anytime

ju-jitsu or brazilian jui-jitsu? very different systems
the former includes kicks, throws and weapon work, the latter is no strikes, throws and ground work.

muay thai is an excellent striking art to learn, i love the knees *evil laugh*
Its tough conditioning wise and if you can pick it up well, your striking will be top notch (if you add some wrestling training!).

the energy levels really sucked last week as i'm essenitally on sub 50 carbs a day, i get through AM cardio and PM training with the help of my coach egging me on and the thought of being over my weight class at weigh in.

I drink lucosade to give me some energy pre- and during MMA training and hang in there during sparring... luckily my fitness has improved ten fold since the AM cardio.

I've stopped the heavy weights for now to concentrate on getting to the 90kg limit but with the weights i have been doing they are a fair bit lower. (muscle loss i know)

i plan to drop the kicks this week and try and protect the rib from techniques during class, if it involves reaching, twisting quickly etc i'll do another technique.

what was the injury?
i know when i cracked my ribs it was pretty damn painful doing anything, had to give up the cycling for a while.
as far as i know its just normal ju-jitsu... there are a couple of places that do it near me, and the muay thai is at various places as well.
The club im thinking of going to does jkd, ju-jitsu, kickboxing, boxing, muay thai, and escrima (sp?) plus its a full time weights gym as well... ive been told if i
get thier gold membership to the gym i will be allowed in any of the ma lessons at any time so it sounds like a good deal.
Costs about 60 a month but considering a gym is about £30-40 around here just for the basic gym £60 for full access to everything doesnt sound too bad.
My overall fitness/cardio fitness sucks big time, so this thread will be of interest to me haha

I was rolling (bjj sparring) and i just agony in my right side, if you poke down the bottom of the ribs from the front i weep like a little school girl... i'm saying its a cracked rib. No point going to hospital as they can do nothing as you well know

Sounds like a good set up at that gym for the price, weight training/cardio/MMA for £60! I pay £40 for the gym and £30 for MMA training.
escrima is stick fighting i think... nucking futs that lot

fitness is easy to pick up with some good cardio sessions and sparring, just keep at it when you start on a regular basis and you'll see things develop quickly

I've quit bodybuilding per se and now geared towards my MMA
I let myself go a bit with the diet but still went hard at the weights so i'm sitting at 100kg (220lbs = 15.7 stone)

I have a fight February 16th and i need to shed 8kg to get to the middleweight catagory as they've put the light heavy weight bracket at 93-120kg! (fook that).

I'd rather be the heaviest middleweight than the lightest light heavyweight

Pic are up in the MT shape up contest thinga'ma'jig but i'll repost

Stats:

Height - 5ft 9
Weight - 100kg
Neck - 17
Arms - 17
Waist - 36
Thigh - 26
Calf - 17.5

Chest size??

Are you fighting as amateur on semi??

lol, its not the same at home staring at the missus

last night was BJJ, going over drills... dominating when in someones guard, defending guard and passing it.

rolling at the end of class was unreal.

1st round: rolled with a guy who turtles...(sadly) as everyone had paired off. usual side mount to mount and reverse, pulled off two chokes.

2nd round: rolled with a new guy so practiced submissions from different positions, got off about 5.

3rd round: rolled with an amateur fighter (not yet pro) and kept my positions, pulled off two arm/head chokes... got mount, worked mount/side mount and kept them.... bucked out of a mount and sent the guy right over my head

*see below

4th round: sparred an instructor... i decided to work off my back as i've got at least 30kg on him (50lbs), who better to practice guard defence/offence...
i controlled his head and body position, prevented any passes and managed to submit him twice with kimouras, first time i've ever submitted him.

* when i was rolling my main coach was looming above me watching me move from position to position, keeping control. Afterwards he asked how i felt and commented on how much better i look and perform at the lower weight.
That really picked me up, he's a tough bastard

couldnt sleep last night, was still buzzing from the rolling.

-----------------------------------------

6am, hit the alarm, didnt feel like i even slept much but popped two eph25+ caps this time, i havent been feeling too much of a buzz.

6:30am
treadmill, interval training for 20 minutes for 3km

weight 93.75kg <----- same as monday

7am: typing this feeling like the squirrel off Ice Age...no shakes but my head feels light and my eyes are glancing all over the show

Wrestling:

'Medicine balls of love' warm up made me feel drunk on the low carbs, on the last round skipping my brain couldn't figure out how to get my feet jump over the rope

Sparring.... well lets just say i need to work on keeping my hands up.

round 1) got smacked about a bit, walked onto some great hooks.

round 2) against the 6ft 5 guy, no chance on getting close...pulled off 3-4 leg kicks and took him down, worked on punching him in his guard. Man its hard working with taller guys...

round 3) i chopped at his leg a fair few times with thai kicks and soon he couldnt stand up...i saw the bruise on his leg and it seems i was hitting the same spot again and again

round 4) with one of the big lads, didnt fair too bad, walked onto a massive right hook (jaw hurts like a b**ch this morning)... tied him up when it went to the ground.

round 5) Against my usual training partner, 50/50... both walked onto shots

then after that 3 rounds of BJJ....

round 1) rolled with one of the vets, managed to keep him in side mount and pulled off my sub against him :D

round 2) rolled with my training partner, always a good match off.... 50/50 again... no distinct winner, i got mount, he got mount.

round 3) against the guy i drive to class, he's a light weight... he gave me no end of trouble, i was fighting to keep side mount and his legs were all over the show like spagetti... no subs

rib held out, no pain. felt like i was 90 years old climbing into bed last night lol

cheers guys

I stopped Judo classes when i was 10 years old (checked my old license!), i've been contemplating starting back up again so i took the bull by the horns and went to a club 20 yards from my MMA club.

There were at least 10 black belts there (most 40+) so that was a great sign. The clubs produced national athetes to go on to the olympics, what better place to blow off the cobwebs.

The coach asked me about me previous MA experiance and i rattled off those that i had done and those i am currently doing... as soon as he saw my MMA club hoodie he said that the classes are relaxed, no killing each other.

They worked on throws and i just worked from what came back to me

Worked on ground work and i was paired with a senior black belt (and i mean senior), the coach rattled off a few japanese moves to do and i was left
Then i realised it was moving from a basic scarf hold to side mount, bingo... this stuff was basically BJJ class from months ago so i worked well at.
Old man river looked like he was going to die, i've been taught to keep my weight on their chest at all times and i think he was more tired than me

Worked on passing guard, something i thought i'd be wizzing by with... err...no.
With Judo you have Gi's, the cotton tops you wear, in MMA you dont, so when i tried to pass his guard he choked me with my own Gi. Its a whole new world working with the Gi, things are not as easy as with bare top MMA BJJ.

At the end of class we sparred, i was paired with a black belt my age and he went over my footwork... he went for a throw and out of no where i reversed it and sent him flying on his back.
One of the senior black belts saw it and they both complimented me on my reversal... nearly pulled it off again later.

Sparred with a coach and he was ragging me, telling me to stop using my strength to fight him, to pull him more and to throw him in the direction i was travelling... this guy's a task master and general ball breaker me thinks.

Sparred a green belt and i reversed two throws and caught him with one.

Old man river told me at the end if i wish to compete and grade i will be miles ahead of the competition in the early stages. They are grading at the end of February so if i join now i could hopefully go for yellow belt + if i perform well.

At the end when everyone lined up the black belts talked about how class went and the final black belt (most senior) singled me out and said i had a 'fantastic start and well done'... felt a tad embarressed

session was 8pm-10pm

------------------------------------------------

woke up 6am...sore and tired from this weeks training so far...only two more sessions to go.

I had planned on relaxing in the jacuzzi for 30mins but for some annoying ****ing reason i packed my running gear in my gym bag instead. I was pissed off when i opened my gym bag in the locker room...

Must be a sign to get the job done

sitting bike - 30mins

oh and my weight is now 92.75kg (204lbs from 220lbs)

Sounds like your really training hard mate and obviously the lack of cals / carbs will make this even harder.Reading your journal really makes me want to get back into MMA , I've been rumbling on about this for a while but I just keep thinking it's pointless at my age. My lifestyle and goals have changed a lot since I used to do it and I cant imagine I'd have the fire any more.

I expect vids of your fights by the way and agreeing to put them on here might even motivate you a little bit more , although to be fair you dont seem to have any problems in that department

hey Pagan, thanks for dropping in

The low carbs is making this harder your right, by the end of the week i have to pull myself together to spar on the saturdays which incidently is the hardest day of the week.

get back into it, regardless of your age...randy couture, enough said
the fire is always there, it just needs something to stir it back up, pick your motivation

i'm getting friends to video my fights, i am going in excited of the learning curve... its a no head shots competition so dont expect UFC style slug fests.

Funnily enough I do think of Randy as an example although obviously my hope would be simply to enjoy holding my own against lads in the classes rather than UFC Heavyweight champ of the world

Dont worry I've seen amateur rule fights involving no head shots. I went to a local comp about a year ago , cant remeber what it was called but there were lads from all over the North of England. There was a lad fighting out of my old class but he got made to look bad unfortunatley which ruined my street cred with the people I was with
