Exact same thought went through my mind reading this Chrissie. Much as I hate them, having been 'close' once I never miss. In fact when I was reverted to the 3 yearly check I was concerned and questioned the Doc about sticking to once per year Gemma (nice to see you ), believe you me, I relax. They never bothered me before I trained

TBH smears have never really bother me! Uncomfortable, yes and not exactly something I'd pick as a fun thing to do in my spare time. Saying that I've not have one since I've started training so that will be interesting. I did have a slight prolapse after sprog numero duo but physio sorted that and I've not had any prob;ems sionce....saying that I haven't had any kids since either lmfao. Really glad all you ladies are fine and dadny now! Good thread!

The last 'fanny fiddle' (LOL) I had, was heavy handed and it made me bleed. I confess I have been avoiding my call up for another one, but having read some of the stories on here, it's reminded me of the importance of going.

Family Planning Clinic usually a better option for longer appointment times and less of a patronising attitude! Worth going to if you find GP / Practice nurse a bit intimidating! Please spare a thought for me, when I go I usually find one of my colleagues waiting to 'fiddle' with my 'fanny' - absolutely bloody mortifying! Still go though........ (RHF please take note! Just. Do. It!)

Kitty - the worse thing is that they feel the need to carry on a conversation with you, usually about work whilst digging around down there! Have actually got over the mortification now (well, almost). It also means I keep my appointments for my bikini waxes.....

Does any of this remind anyone of the Billy Connolly sketch about women needing to learn to do pelvic floor exercise and throw their voice?

Firstly, sorry to hear that so many of you have had "close calls" over the years; I very much hope you are all ok now, and continue to be so in the future. I never used to get much bother with smears till I moved house and changed surgery; after that, every single one, I experienced extreme pain and bled quite badly afterwards. It wasn't until my second-but-last smear that the practice nurse, who is actually my husband's cousin, told me to insist on the small device that I was aware that they even came in more than one size . It makes sense; I mean women come in all shapes and sizes, and when you choose the cap as your method of contraception, there are all different sizes, so why not speculums (or is that speculae?!!)? I think the general assumption seemed to be that once you're past a certain age, you've not only seen it and done it a good few times, but given birth to it too, so wey-hey, there's room for the Empire State Building up there. All I can say is praise-be to my cousin-in-law; I still don't enjoy the experience, but at least I don't walk like I've done the Pennine Way on a Shetland Pony for three days afterwards Oh, and for anyone with an impending fanny fiddle, after the experience of one of my work colleagues, I'd avoid booking it for the day after you've been out on the curry run the night before; suffice it to say, the king-sized nappy was definitely required afterwards...

Yep, can be a bit embarassing when someone you know fiddles with your bits. I live in a very rural location, where everyone seems to know everyone else. One of our GP's took our youngest son for football practice and the next day I was in the surgery, on the couch with him feeling for a lump in my breast - good time to discuss the 'off side' rule! My midwives were also close personal friends! My main concern whilst having the smear done, is to not fart in the doctors face! No, it's never happened...well not yet...but a nurse once made a comment about not farting ( jokey, jokey) and ever since, it's been a case of trying not to I've got three children, so having someone rumaging about down there doesn't bother me, as long as they're not taking your kid for football practice too!!! Contrary to popular belief, having had children doesn't mean that having a smear equates to waving a cigar around in the Albert hall Hubby can testify to that Even though I had two of my children with no pain relief, I still find the smear uncomfortable, sometimes slightly sore. It's a small price to pay for something that could, quite literally save your life. Just for the record, I too had abnormal cells detected, it was years and years ago and everything turned out fine. quote:

I had my daughter with my ex because of a bad smear test with pre-cancerous cells. Didn't want the decision taken away from us so we had our daughter. Everything turned out fine for the ex mind on the cancer side. Still, have the most beautiful daughter in the world, all because of a smear...

Yes I did - had her for about 3 days. Was great. She was really well behaved and we played and opened presents and generally had a great xmas. Was the best i've had in years. Which was a welcome relief - the new GF was a big help in that too
