Kitty - as a general practitioner - I think you are on track with this one! Even though there is no scientific evidence to back this up, women who are well physiqued (PC term used in NHS to describe muscular, lean women!) tend to find the smear uncomfortable. There is no reason why a smaller speculum cannot be used if requested, it does not alter the test in any way. I do know that many nurses and GPs who perform the test are dismissive of being asked for this, but it is your right to have it if you prefer. A smaller speculum does have to travel the same distance as a normal size one though, so you will feel a certain amount of 'pushing'! Of course, psychological factors come in to play with this too, unfortunately, relaxing is v hard when you are stripped from the waist down in some drafty clinic!

Interesting stuff ChrissieG, presumably, on the plus side, a 'well physiqued' lady would be at less risk of prolapse and/or postural incontinence?

Thanks for that, very interesting. Took some courage to post this but knowing I'm not alone (as I said I'd discussed it with another female BB) made me wonder if it was common place. Interesting that it also affect Mums Chrissie, my nurse was very understanding and said when I'm next due in to ask her for the smaller speculum. I think she will try anything to cut it down from the normal 20mins it takes with me . Would be quite a comical one to study scientifically .

Well, most reasearch is carried out by men/male research fellows so I don't think it is something they would find particualry relevant - now if men had to have a similar procedure, we would be flooded with research (see amount of stuff on prostate problems)! Kitty, glad you had a sympathetic nurse, some of the old guard are a little heavy handed! Crowella, yes we usually find that well physiqued women suffer less from any kind of incontinence (imagine the thread on that one!) although I think prolapses (especially of the uterus) are not necessarily affected by the external muscle cage.

Maybe it's something that could be done via interview/questionnaire as I'm sure we all know if it hurts or not down there . Perhaps one for a trainee gyno who's interested in training.....now what are the chances of that

I had cervical cancer a few years back (discovered by a routine smear, luckily for me) and soon had to get used to all that faffing about down there on a regular basis. I still have to have them every 6 months now. It's kinda uncomfortable but I wouldn't say it hurts as such for me - it's a bit scratchy when they do the smear itself but the speculum doesn't bother me. Maybe I'm more relaxed as I'm used to them?

TT, was that just precancerous cells are the full blown stuff? I had the former and had to go through 6monthly checks like you but I never got used to them.

I went for a colpo and biopsy after getting a few bad results and they thought it might just be precancerous cells, but it wasn't, so they did cryosurgery thinking they'd caught it early enough; which they hadn't, so I then had to have a couple of ops. Luckily I didn't have to undergo chemo or anything as they cut it all out before it spread too far (aren't I technical?!). That's why I couldn't train for yonks and put on weight then turned into a big bloater because I was depressed that I'd put on weight!

Oowh, nasty TT, glad you're ok now and they caught it. I was scared as hell with the precancerous stuff and thought the worst and it wasn't until I got talking to a few other women about it I found out how common it is . Welshy, did they offer for you to watch it on camera . They did me but I just turned my head away

I thought it was fascinating watching it on camera, but then I've never been bothered by injections or anything gory really. First time I went for a biopsy I forgot to take a liner with me for afterwards, and stupidly also had the tiniest thong in the world on. The nurses p!ssed themselves laughing at me when I realised I was gonna have to try and use a hospital-issue nappy-sized pad with my thong. I'm all ok now though which is the main thing.

What a read and the "Fanny Fiddle" such a laugh! I had pre cancerous cells and went through the same as you girls, fine now but i do think i got used to it, when i first started having treatment i had them every 3 months which my GP did (male) and it was fine . then it moved on to every six months and i had a couple of painful smear teats by the nurse. Everything fine now having them once a year now. The GP said once why didnt i just put the gloves on and do it myself i'd had that many !!! Its amazing so many of us been in the same boat.

Hiya Kitty, I always dread the "fanny fiddle" I think its the stress before it happens, hence the words "just relax"may as well be "am gonna try and park this bus down there"., Its not gonna happen! I know for Me its got nothing do with training, as am not that trained, I used to think it was because I haven t had Kids or am only little, Luckly My "Fiddle" is fine so don t have to go that often, Gemma

Good to hear that the smears are actually doing their job - saving lives. Cervical cancer is one of the most vicious cancers once it takes hold. Can I just say to everyone PLEASE GO WHEN YOU ARE CALLED - sooooo many of our ladies fail to turn up, obviously because it is not the most pleasant thing in the world, however as this thread shows, it can save your life! Right, off NHS soapbox and off to dream of posing in v high pole dancer shoes! Take care all!
