Hi all Just a quick update - back feels a lot better but not quite 100% so I'm going to take the rest of this week off too just to make sure it makes a complete recovery Would rather miss a few sessions this way than try to train through it, make it worse and then have no choice but to take who knows how long off from training - worse case scenario of course, but better safe than sorry Dan

You should always go with your gut instinct. I think you're being very wise with this decision. Hope you enjoy the rest and look forward to seeing you able to get back in and give it some welly again.

Cheers Dave! Front squat is definitely one of my strengths it would seem. I've always done them this way, so they feel completely natural to me. Still pi55-poor compared to what some folks can do though Look at Rezazedeh squatting 617lbs for a double (!): http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=hkSN3f-a3Ok&feature=PlayList&p=69BB62EA8797FCEF&index=15 That guy is just awesome Anyway my back's feeling a lot better, I'd say about 95% normal now so should definitely be back to training as usual come monday Now have this awful toothache to contend with. About 18 months ago had problems with my wisdom tooth and had to have a couple of fillings... and it's flared up again With any luck the dentist will be able to pull the sodding thing out

Mon 3rd March 2008 BENCH PRESS 26kg x12 52kg x6 82kg x4 ^warm-up 96kg x8 96kg x8 96kg x7 (failed on the 8th rep) INCLINE BENCH PRESS 78kg x8 78kg x8 78kg x8 CLOSE-GRIP BENCH PRESS 72kg x8 72kg x8 72kg x8 Went quite well, enjoyed it Shame not to get all three sets of 8 for flat bench, but no big deal Still I was expecting strength to be down TBH so happy to get 2 sets of 8 at 96kg (1kg more than last week) considering my toothache induced lack of sleep over the last few days. That and I haven't been eating as much either - didn't really fancy much in the way of solid food Back feels fine now, so will be deadlifting and rowing again on wednesday A song for today: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=r-7pTQx6d3U 'Skulls' by the Misfits, possibly one of the coolest bands ever to have existed

You've done great to have persevered through your various ailments! Glad to hear the back is feeling better. Think you did the sensible thing there. Yeah Misfits! With the best (and proper) line-up. I saw the current incarnation in Camden back in September 06. Despite having Dez Cadena on guitar, Robo on drums and Jerry on vocals it still sounded like a bad karaoke .

You'd think with a couple of ex-members of Black Flag on board, they'd be kicking much ass, wouldn't you? I don't blame you for being disappointed Didn't they have the drummer from the Ramones at one point?! Black Flag went through loads of members, especially in the early days. I wonder what happened to some of them? Apparently their second singer is now a born-again Christian Line-up wise I think they were at their peak from about '81 - '83 - apart from the revolving door drummers, everything else was stable and there was the classic Greg Ginn / Dez double guitar wall of noise. According to wikipedia there were 16 line-up changes in all and 7 drummers

Weds 5th March 2008 DEADLIFT 52kg x10 72kg x5 92kg x5 92kg x5 102kg x5 102kg x5 104.5kg x5 107kg x5 110kg x5 BENT-OVER ROWS 51kg x10 71kg x10 ^warm-up 93kg x8 93kg x8 93kg x8 BARBELL CURLS 42kg x10 42kg x10 42kg x10 Tried out the sumo stance on deads today, just finding my feet *looks down* Oh, there they are Some thoughts: - First few sets were very easy indeed, so I tentatively added some more weight, which felt fine. Even the last set at 110kg didn't feel difficult - Feels a lot more comfortable than conventional: it's easier to keep my back nice and straight, leverage feels better as the bar is closer to my body throughout the lift, and my knees aren't in the way - Can definitely feel it in my inner thighs a lot more - I expect I will have some DOMS there in the morning - Feels a lot slower off the floor at first, but I find the bar accelerates the higher it gets. Lockout is a piece of cake. I'm sure when the weights get heavier this won't always be so, however - Back feels like it has been worked but by keeping everything stable, rather than in a 'doing all the work' kind of way... if that makes sense - Will try 5 working sets at 110kg next week and see how that goes... obviously I'm in no rush to pile on weight here, would rather work on technique and allow my body to get used to doing it this way - Ideally would like to film myself and put it on youtube for constructive criticism (not that many Youtube users would be capable of such a thing!), regarding form but I'm lacking a video camera. I'll check with my housemates to see if they have some way of filming it Watch this space Dan

Nice work brother. Sumo deads will *almost* always be tougher off the floor - you're able to push your hips through much easier at the top, and the shorted ROM means you're not as fatigued as conventional at the top. Keep the updates coming!

Yes, I found that the higher the bar got, the easier the pull became - quite the opposite to the conventional style I'm currently on youtube looking at various vids, there's a one of Justin Hurley which never seems to work, ever

Should be good for a bit more weight next week Song for today is 'Personal Jesus' by Johnny Cash, since I'm currently reading his autobiography: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=jQcNiD0Z3MU Great version, p1sses all over Marilyn Manson's terrible attempt

I've always had a soft spot for militarys - there's something quite primal about pressing heavy (ish!) weights over your head quote:

ORIGINAL: kerr616 im glad your journal is receiving some quality attention as it was, and still is a very good read fella the lifts are very impressive, particularly the militaries considering that you have not done them for 3 weeks what width are you using (not that i am trying to deter from the poundage i am just curious) Cheers geezer The grip I use is just outside shoulder width. I used to do them a lot wider but feel stronger this way quote:

Sat 8th March 2008 FRONT SQUAT 26kg x12 52kg x6 82kg x4 ^warm-up 102kg x8 102kg x8 102kg x8 ROMANIAN DEADLIFT 102kg x8 102kg x8 102kg x8 STANDING CALF RAISES 112kg x25 112kg x25 Finished off with some shoulder dislocates 3 x 10 This went really well. Thought squats would be hard after a few weeks away from them, but if anything they felt easy. First set I felt I could've got another couple of reps out Trying out romanian deadlifts as I feel that they'll be a bit safer than SLDLs (even though I feel there's not a lot of difference tbh). They seem to work the hips a bit more however, which I'm sure will benefit my sumo deads Nice day off tomorrow
