Get your foot in the door with a SMB PBX/solutions company - and get them to shower you with courses mainly in IP and VOIP.

well phones and the internet don't seem to be going anywhere, I'll hedge my bets you do that and hopefully it will all go very well for you, but I wouldnt be so smug fella and dismiss what I said without actually being open to the idea, and what Doc backed up through experience as if you actually look at the telecoms industry you'll see it is one of the worst industries for going through highs and lows yes the internet is there and so are mobiles but the networks are only needing expanding not new networks, the kit just needs upgrading not full from new installs, the fibres are in the ground, the new muxes and swithces can handle higher volume of traffic across the same fibres so no new fibres require installing only maintaining, you see my point if not ask the tens of thousands (and thats not exaggerated) of ex telecoms industry staff that got made redundant the last time the industry went through a real low point around 2001-2003 amyway wont dwell on the subject lol, and who exactly do you think will maintain and upgrade the IP networks? Why the hell would I be concerned about putting new fibre in the floor? lol

COT what hes saying is dont bury your head in the sand , dont believe for 1 minute that that you ahead of the game or a company needs you, telecoms firms will fire you off at the blink of an eye if it means getting a tick in the box or saving a few quid , even if it means they will have to pay more later to get you back , its all about deffering cost , and meeting your quartlery targets to please shareholders also if a firm needs 100 trained staff on a day to day basis , what they do now is get 50 perm staff and 50 contractors on short term , even if the 50 contractors dont have a clue , they just add more pressure to the perm staff and management telling them they have enough headcount to do the job, then when things slacken off and project come to an end its bye bye contractors , until the next project comes along and you get a fresh new contractor to train up bear in mind you could be one of these 50 perm staff who will get the bullet , on the flip side you could get the bullet and be doing the same job at the same place for more money a day later , its a cruel environment be on your guard

I understand that doc but IMO it's the people who don't put the time and effort in who usually get the chop. Now I'm not saying that's always the case, but I have already learnt that you have to keep on studying constantly and keep on your bettering yourself, if you do, there will always be something out there for you - even if it involves contracting and working away from home during the week etc. My new job is on a 7 year contract from the Welsh Assembly which involves my team designing, building, implementing and supporting the Wales public sector network.. that network won't go anywhere, and the jobs can't go abroad because they are goverment networks. We hook straight on to super janet 5 with 2 2.5 gig pipes Although I am at the bottom of the comms chain there doing the 2nd line support, its still sweet enough. Anyway, yeah, I know jobs aren't 100% secure, but the fact no new fibre goes into the ground has no bearing on it whatsoever.
