Sounds like an awesome gig and good work on getting back into the venue after being chucked out!

Stupid policy the club has, what do they expect with a band like that? The audience to be watching stood still like statues? I suspect they're paranoid about getting sued or something

Mind you I have been to some shows in the past where people were really being nobs - I saw Converge a while back in Canterbury and some of the people there were just being plain violent, deliberately punching and elbowing people

I think your right on about the fear of getting sued. It's all seems a far cry from CBGB's and the like though!

Yes, it can deffo swing to far the other way too. To me the pit always been about having fun, enjoying the music less passively than you would do otherwise. When someone goes down you pick them up etc, when I first started gigging there was a real sense of camaraderie, it was rough and frantic and but no one was trying to hurt anyone. Now that 'hardcore' (by which I mean metal-core, not proper hardcore) has gone mainstream all the kids think it very cool to start throwing spin-kicks and try their out their pre-coreographed dance moves. Sad sate of affairs really.

ME Squat

A) Olympic ATG squat (belt-less)

barxmany
60kx6
100kx3
110kx2
120kx2
150kx walkout (10 second hold)
170kx walkout (10 second hold)
130kx5x5

I'm slowly crawling my way to wear I want to be for this lift. I think the walkouts are helping via CNS disinhibition. 130k feels quite light after having heavier weight on your back.

B) BB Goodmornings

60k-3x10
70k-1x10
80k-1x10

Havent dont GM's for awhie was quite surprised I managed the 80k set but I guess my increased deadlift strength has meant increased posterior change strength overall.

C) Leg curl

15k-1x20

Just a set to flush the hamstrings really.

Comments: Squat is starting to move, I am pleased with this. Got lazy and neglected Ab work today, will do it tomorrow. I'm up to London saturday morning and over the weekend, so I will have my bench session tomorrow.

Song for today: Ignite - Veteran

Yeah I've been to plenty of shows where there's been a massive semi-circle of people nowhere near the stage because a couple of twats just have to show off trying to do kickboxing moves and windmilling. There was a band I used to go see a lot, xCanaanx, great band, but they tended to attract these idiots

I agree with what you mean about 'hardcore'... it's nowadays used all to often to describe bad metal crossover bands, often with some bullshit macho 'toughguy' attitude. Personally the term means to me Minor Threat, SOA and so on, as well as later bands like Gorilla Biscuits and Youth of Today. But things change I guess

Apologies for the lack of updates, weekend was pretty hectic and I was absolutely knackered yesterday and could only manage a few inane general posts!.

15/02/08

ME Bench

60kx6
80kx6
100kx1
110kx1
120kx1
132.5kx1PR*(touch from spotter at lockout)

Not really a PR I guess. I was only a couple inches away from lockout but it was uneven. My set-up didn’t really feel comfortable either and the bar-path drifted outwards.

B) DB shoulder press

3x8@35kDB's

No problems here.

C) Tate presses

4x10 @12.5kDB’s

Hadn’t done these for ages, just threw them in for a bit of variety.

Comments:

Back down to fives next week for the bench.

ME Deadlift
(Week 5 OJ deadlift routine)

A) Deadlift

60kx6
100kx5
140kx3
160kx1
160kx1
200kx3x2 (all belt-less)

Three sets of doubles at 200k. Form wasn’t brilliant TBH. My hips were definitely rising too early and as a lockout wasn’t as smooth as it could have been. However I did not fail which is most important.

B) Chest-supported rows

4x10 @60k

Was too knackered to do anything else after this so went home.

Bench assistance

A) 2 board press

60kx6
80kx3
100kx3
110kx1
120kx1
130xfail

S**t!. Right, I need to back right off on the singles now. I’ve got greedy in these last two bench sessions.

B) DB shoulder press

37.5kDB’s – 5x5

No problems here.

C) Face-pulls

5x10@20k

Comments: I am in danger of overtraining on the bench. TBH trying to max out twice a week on bench movements is more than a little foolish and quite rightly as a result I have not progressed.

Hey brother. Looks like you might have some trouble with your lockout eh? What really helped me with that is rack lockouts, for a 4-6" rom

What're your goals?

Hi Keenan, thank for dropping in. Congratulations on your latest meet results, some VERY impressing lifting there.

I did actually use to do Rack lockouts and quite liked them. However in the gym I lift at now the power rack holes for the safety bars are something like 8"apart so that set-up is a little difficult at the mo. Will see if I can work round it though.

Goals are 450/330/530 by the years end.

585/400/585 (raw) over the next couple of years.

I was wondering myself where the quote was from... now I know

Good lifting there, especially on deadlifts - you'll have 220kg in the bag soon enough

ME Squat

A)Barbell Full Squat

Barx15
60kx6
100kx3
110kx2
120kx2
160kwalkout
180kwalkout
135x10x3

That's was TEN sets of THREE, and boy did I forget how brutal it can be. The hardest sets were 6 and 7 as fatigue really began to set in, I thought to myself, 'No way am I getting through 10 sets'. However by set 8 I got my second wind and with the finish line in sight, ploughed through the remaining sets without compromising form.
Quite happy with this performance to be honest. The day where I'm handling 3 plates aside comfortably cant be far off.

B) Leg Press

200kx4x10

Four sets of ten here. I haven’t used the leg press in awhile, I remember never quite being able to get comfortable. You see the machine in my current gym is quite old and the feeling like my lower back is under pressure is always an issue (unlike the squat which feels quite natural these days). However I managed to get semi-comfortable and go reasonably heavy. Didn’t go super deep, but I don’t think that would have been optimal anyway.

C) Leg curl

25kx5x8

Meh.

Comments: As you can see today’s volume was quite high. Didn’t do much lower body work on Monday, so I upped the ante a bit today. Squat is on the up nicely at the moment (though I guess when it's this weak, it's the only way to go!). I'm in two minds on how to progress from here with the movement. On the one hand I'd like to whack on 140k and bust a gust for 3x3 next week, though that will have to be a serious effort though. On the other, I could continue with the higher volume approach e.g back down to 5x5 or maybe even 3x8, this appears to be building confidence and mental toughness. I am however eager to start handling 3 plates.
Either way I'll have a think about it and deceide by next Thursday.

ME Bench

Barxmany
60kx6
80kx3
100kx2
110kx5x5

Didnt have a spotter, so was fretting about having to lift-off the bar myself. Was fine on all sets really. Not having a spotter ruined my confidence a bit, so I rushed the reps when I wnted to throw in a few pauses, other than that, happy with this performance. Will try 115k next week.

B) Corner Rows

4x10@75k(inc bar)

No problems here.

C) JM Presses

4x10@50k

Went super-strict here, tri's absolutley fried and pumped to fcuk.

D) Ext. Rotations

3x8@12.5k Db's.

Meh.

Comments: I am 21 years old today. The end of an era indeed.

ME Deadlift

Week 6 OJ Deadlift routine

A) Speed pulls at 85% of 1RM

60kx6
100kx6
140kx1
160kx1
187.5kx1
187.5kx1
187.5kx1
187.5kx1
187.5kx1

Felt quite tired and drained to begin with. Didnt feel very explosive at all.

B) Rack Pulls (from just below the knee)

100kx3
140kx3
180x1
200kx1
220kx1
230kx1 PR

Felt a bit more alive during these happy with the 230k pull. Was going to do a drop down set with 200k gripped the bar and just felt nothing, so didnt do it.

Comments:
Not a bad days lifting I suppose.

Song for the day: Saint Vitus - One Mind

Cheers Dan!

Nah. I work evenings and I wasnt too fussed about going out afterwards to be honest. I'm at fairly quiet stage in my life socially. Most of my mates are located all over the country so we only meet up sporadically at gigs really. However I'm trying to put this time to good use and doing as much reading, learning, writing, training as possible. No time like the present 'n' all that .

What I'm more pleased about is the £100 in amazon vouchers I've been given. Have just been poking around the site and looking at a few titles. If you were to reccommend an introductory book to the work of Noam Chomsky which one would you go with?

Anything else that you think's a must read(any genre and either fiction or non-fiction)?

Bench assistance

A) 2 Board press

60kx6x1
80kx3x1
100kx8x3

3 sets of 8. Dropping intensity and upping the volumke after last week's failure. First set was okay, a bit wobbly but no cause for concern, just finding the groove really. Second set was good very fast but I bounced a few of the reps. 3rd set was perfect. I made a conscious effort to pause all reps and was explosive. Will probably try 3x8 for 110k next week.

B) DB Shoulder press

20kDB'sx6x1
30kDB'sx4x1
40kDB'sx4x5
40kDB'sx3x1

Was gunning for a full 6x4 for the 40kDB's. Failed on the last rep of the last set, so close!. I might have been able to get it if I didnt of have to claen the DB's into position on my own. A spotter would have helped in this instance.

C) Kroc Rows

45kDB's

1x20
1x15(+5 rest/pause)
1x14(+3,+3 rest pause)

Grip kept giving out on the last few sets, despite copious amounts of chalk. Hence the multiple rest/pause sets.

D) Hammer curls

15k DB'sx10x1

Only did one set of these for two reasons. 1) I was absolutely cream crackered. 2) My friend and powerlifting mentor Brain turned up and so we got chin-wagging for a good half hour.
Despite a luandry list of current injuries, last weekend he qualified for WDFPA masters. He also gave me a bollocking because with my current total I would have qualified for the British (assuming I would have squatted 160k, which I havent done for awhile, but think I can nonetheless)im weight class and category. I remarked that this time next year I'll have an extra 90k on my total and be a real force to be reckoned with!. He laughed at that statement .

Awesome tune from an awesome band - 'Black Dots' has to be one of the best records ever released, still blows pretty much everything else away. Shame about all the stuff that's happened over the years

Well he's written a great deal of stuff but I think a good place to start with Chomsky would be 'Understanding Power' as it gives a good overview of a lot of the arguments he's made over the years. It also touches a bit on the work he's done in the field of linguistics (his day job), which is very interesting. It's transcripts from some of the many interviews he's done over the years and would serve as a good way in to the more densely academic work he's done:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Understanding-Power-Indispensable-Chomsky-Noam/dp/0099466066/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1204153568&sr=8-1

'Manufacturing Consent' is the book that everyone has heard of, so that's a must read as well IMO. It's co-written with a guy named Edward Herman

A few other writers worth looking at:

John Pilger
Robert Fisk
Mark Curtis
George Monbiot

It's definitely useful and balanced to read advocates from the other side of the political spectrum too - the arguments made in these books are worth looking at:

Milton Friedman 'Capitalism and Freedom'
Friedrich Hayek 'The Road to Serfdom'
Adam Smith 'The Wealth of Nations' (a bit hard going at times as it was written in the 18th century)

Hope that's given you a few ideas

As for fiction, not sure what to suggest as I don't know the kind of thing you're in to, though IMO you can't go wrong with the classics

Alright Keenan?

No, my gym only has 2 boards. As a raw lifter I would think it wouldnt be neccesary to train with more than that.
