ORIGINAL: DrRick I'm a convert to a second session on bench with DE work, having been sceptical. As I've said in various places, I think the work on generating speed is helpful in itself, but the fact that you're doing a lot of sets without hammering your recovery (in fact, I think helping your recovery) is a massive boost for form. You just have to make sure you give every set - even the ones with pissy little 40% weights - as much seriousness and explosiveness as you'd give a max single. That in itself works wonders for focus, imo. Thanks for the input Rick. I've been working hard bringing my lockout up to par, and it's worked, so now I think I should concentrate on bringing up bar-speed, which I feel is deffo lacking. What's your percentage guidline for DE bench then?, I've had reccomended as high as 60% to as low as 35%?.

20/03/08 ME Squat ATG Barbell Olympic squats barxmany 60kx6 100kx5 110kx2 120kx2 140kxwalkout 160kxwalkout 120kx12 120kx12 120kx11(Failed on attmept of 12th rep) Happy with these. I think dropping weight and upping reps was smart as I was plateauing with 10x3. Forgot how knackering high reps are though!. B) Pull-ups BWx8x2 For spinal de-compression. C) Weighted sit-ups 27.5kDB'sx12 30kDB'sx12 32.5kDB'sx12 LOL, core work at last! Comments: Much better than last week's squat sesh!. Will add on 5k and go for 3x10 next week. Nice work on those squats bro! For the DE work, percents can vary, but one thing to keep in mind, is barspeed is paramount; if the weight gets too heavy to keep up bar speed, drop back down. A good cycle for raw bench could be 50-55-60, with 8x3, straight weight

I had no idea Dr Feelgood were still going to be honest, 'Milk and Alcohol's a great tune. Just found a clip of them playing 'Roxette' on the Old Grey Whistle Test. I love the guitarist's moves! Shame about the singer passing away http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=XaybV46MA6E

DE bench: to be honest I don't think about %ages, I just start at a convenient weight, go up to another convenient weight, and back down. I don't do the Westside thing of eight threes at straight weight, though I'm sure that's effective too. I start at 70kg and go up in 5kg increments to 110, then back down to 70 in 10kg increments; 13 triples altogether. My max was about 145-150 when I started doing it and is of the order of 160 now, so you can figure out rough %ages if you want them.

Good call Rick Whichever you decide to do, be constantly aware that if the bar starts to slow, the whole point is gone

22/03/08 ME Deadlift Okay, I'm starting another OJ Deadlift routine meso-cycle, hoping to peak and hit 230k in two months time. That's 10k above my current PR. I believe as long as I dont miss any sessions and give it my all every time, there is no reason why I cant hit this target. Week1 (80% of projected 1RM - 5 sets of doubles) 60kx6 100kx4 140kx2 160kx1 185kx2x5 No real problems here. Sets 2+3 felt technically perfect. Sets 4+5 not quite as powerful but no worries. B) Rack Pulls (Knee height) 100kx5 140kx3 190kx1 220kx1 240kx3 - Yeah! 220kx10 - Brutal! Well chuffed with that performance. C) Leg curls 25kx8x3 3 sets of eight = drop sets to failure on last two sets. Comments: Happy with today's workout. Rack pulls went excellently, thank christ I have loads of chalk to prevent grip failure!. Song for the day - Pennywise - Every Time

E'gad! The legendary high poobah himself has commented in me journal!. quote:
Nice lifting. Cheers Mate. Been following your log on sugden for awhile now. Some pretty impressive lifting yourself, especially your deadlifts. quote:
I don't really understand all this % stuff, let alone the A), B) plus DE max ME day minus rack failure divided by meso-peaks bands crap. But what works for you works for you. Nor do I. However you know what they say if you arent strong or muscular, use a load of fancy words and mannerisms to allude otherwise!. Afterall, this is the internet! quote:
Get some vids up I have my recent 220k on my camera. Alas my USB cable has gone walkout about, and despite excursions to Currys, Dixons and Jessops my particular USB cable that is compatible with the camera's port is not carried by any of the aforementioned merchants. I shall have to contact the manufactutrer......or buy a new camera, either it will cost me some coin, so bare with me. To satiate you for now here's a weak-ass 190k platfrom pull I did back in October during the first 'mesocycle' of the 'Olly Jackson' deadlift 'routine'. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g6UzQ3s8uOk

ORIGINAL: Titch My lifts are pretty gay at the moment mate. Working on the squat as I hadn't realised how sh1t I was with depth until I saw my own vid. The 190kg looked p1ss easy, but I've no idea what platform adds to the lift as I've never done them. Are you a London lad? Are you proud that you train in a cap? Have you tried a hoody? I saw your recent squat vid mate. I think your being too hard on yourself, depth looked fine and you were nice and explosive, the only way is up. I did 210k off a platform about 3 weeks back, the lower starting position means you going to have to at least make a conscious effort to use leg-drive otherwise you aint going nowehere. I've had a fairly decent carry-over to the regular lift. I was a Benfleet lad up until about 8 months back. Currently residing on the Isle of Wight(for a few reasons, none dramtic or intresting). If I get the job i'm gunning for I'll be back up to Essex or maybe start looking for my own place in deep sawf. In fact even if if I dont get the job, I think I'll move back up to town anyway. I get's a bit bored down'ere oh-ar. I really liked that cap. However I lost it crowd-surfing at a concert a few months back. It was my 'in-the-zone' cap, I loved it dearly, now it's gone. I dont think I'm ready for hoody progression yet, a bandanna though..........

25/03/08 Bench assistance A)Speed bench (50% of 1RM) 60kx3 65kx3x8 8 sets of 3. Forgot how friggin boring DE work is. B) DB seated shoulder press 37.5k DB’s@3x8 Yeah. C) Kroc rows 45kDB’s@2x15 Grip strength was exhausted at this point. D) BB ballistic(lol) curls 3x6@45k Read about this exercise here yesterday. Just fancied giving it a go for sh*ts and giggles. Comments: I hope I have made the right decision dropping lockout work in favour of speed work. We shall see how it pans out. Song for the day - Wisdom in Chains - Nowhere

28/03/08 A) ATG Oly squat (belt-less) Bar x many 60kx5 100kx3 110kx1 120kx1 130kx1 150kxwalkout 170kxwalkout 120kx10 120kx10 120kx9 (failed on attempt of 10th rep) Same pattern as last week, failed on the last rep of the last set. B) Single-leg Bulgarian squats 32.5kDB’sx15(R.leg) 32.5kDB’sx15(L.leg) At this point I felt like I was going to be sick and my lower back was pumped to hell. So I decided against doing another couple of sets. Comments: I felt a bit of a twinge in my right erector spinae during my squat warm-ups. Which was promptly ignored. Sat here typing this up it feels a bit dodgy. However, I’m sure it’s nothing that a comfortable night’s sleep won’t take care off. Other than that happy that I am still progressing with this lift. Gonna go for 130k for 3x8 next week. Song for the day - Helmet - Unsung

C) JM Presses 40kx10 50kx10 60kx10 60kx10 Felt A'LOT stronger on these today, managed to maintain half decent form as well. D) Face-pulls 5x10@22.5k E) Ext. rotations 10kDB’s@3x8 Comments: Cracking session today. I’m going to start peaking for a 140k bench. Hopefully go for 130k for 3x3 next week.
