Thanks dude. My friend swears by stuff like NO supplements, claiming they make your workouts more intense. Im of the belief that focusing 110% on my lifts and pounding some thrash metal will make any workout more intense than an expensive supplment. Is there any type of movement similar to rack lockouts, but for the bottom portion of the lift? In my next routine, I'll probably work on doing full bench press, 5x3 style. If I use a higher bench, I can basically turn the bottom of the squat rack into a power rack, the way Im doing it now for the rack lockouts. By the way, during the rack lockouts, I get a slight muscle strain in my left hip, right where the leg inserts into it. Ever get that?

Agreed; hard work + time + consistancy is the key to progress in the gym; not some bullshit suppliment or ab machine that costs 5 easy payments of $49.99

That's deffinatly a good idea if you're weak off the chest. You can set it up so the bar is resting on the pins at your chest. Some find this is rough on their shoulders, but if you don't have any problems right now, it should be alright. If it hurts, just stop it .
Wide grip benching, pause benching, dumbells, overheads, and just good ole' regular bench presses will all help strength off the chest

Hmmm, that doesn't sound right. Are you keeping your butt on the bench?

Pretty sure I am. The way I have to do it, with the bottom of the squat rack, is that Im lying on one of those step aerobics benches, only a few inches off the ground. Its fully stable and quite long, but when Im lying on it, my knees are higher than my hips because of how low it is to the ground, so I have no idea if thats a factor or not.

I normally start off with military presses, but all the racks were being used, so I did my close grip benches first. Felt really strong today, as indicated by the extra set on close grip. I finished the 5th set, and I knew I had more, I didnt feel Id gone as hard as I could, so I went for the extra set, with an extra 5lbs

Close Grip Bench 5x5
5@95
5@115
5@125
5@135 New PR, +5lbs
5@135
Extra Set
5@140 New PR, +10lbs from last week, 5lbs from PR

Military Press 5x3

These are still giving me problems in that I dont know the proper form. Im using a pretty narrow grip, as I can press more this way. I have almost a narrow grip bench grip on these at the moment, with my arms in front of me.
3@85
3@85
3@90
3@90
3@90

DB Rows 3x8
8@60
8@65
8@70 New PR, +5lbs

DB Shrugs 3x8 (total weights)
8@190
8@200
8@210 New PR, +10lbs

The racks for our DB's are high, and Im short, so I had to deadlift the DB's to shrug them. Gave me a frigging incredible workout getting em up though. Felt really good today, really strong.

Workouts are still going great, just havent had a chance to sit down and update the journal. When I DID find time, I realized that Ive misplaced my notebook with all my workout info, so I'll have to try and find that. I did get my deadlift for reps up to 265, Im adding 10lbs a week. All my other lifts are slowing down though, after an initial very fast ramp-up in weights. Im not discouraged, just means its more satisfying when I get to a goal because i had to work harder for it.

3@165
3@195

3@225 Had pain in my hips where the femur inserts into the hip, didnt feel great. Lower back is still a bit sore from deads, and my form has me bending forward quite a bit so that the bottom of my squat feels more like half good morning, half squat.

SLDL 5x5
5@135
5@155
5@175
5@195
5@225 Again, didnt feel great, lower back was sore from deads and hips didnt feel great again.

Skipped leg presses since I wasnt feeling great and figured there was no point pushing myself for no reason. Hoping to bounce back next week, really dissapointed with my leg workouts, squats in particular.

Form on squat is absolutely awful and because I leanf orward so much, its been hurting my back. Ive dropped the weight all the way back to the start and Im working on form and full range. All squats were basically ATG with as solid form as I could do. I did the same for SLDL's just to work on my form more and full range of motion, I do them standing on a platform now so that I can go down farther.

Squats 5x3
5@135lbs

SLDL 5x5
5@135lbs

Leg Press 3x8 (The sled says it weighs 118lbs)
8@ 90
8@ 180
8@ 270

Very nice work on those deads Matt! You're doing the smart thing for squats too; if you think your form's bad, there's no need to just ingrain the poor habits.

I'll be competeing May 10th in Missisauga, in the Best Western Toronto Airport West, 5825 Dixie Road. I'll be hanging out the 11th too (I'm competeing on amature day, but the 11th is the pro day, so I'm gonna stick around to watch). You should come hang out one of the days.
