I've found that military and shoulder tend to use my triceps more than shoulder. I'm aware this sounds bizarre but there it is. It also seems to apply to bench, shoulders never seem to be used much in this lift, all tricep again. The popular wisdom of "compounds = all over growth" hasn't really done it for me as far as delts go. Adding in a few isolations after several overheads has helped me for shoulder development.

So for quite a while on bench day I was doing something like
bar bench
incline db bench (or machine incline press)
front raise
cable fly

and shoulder day
bar military
seat db (or a machine shoulder press)
cable raises

I didn't need much, just the extra few sets of isolations.

if it were me

upper/ lower split 2 x a week

maintenance on lower

on upper try to put the weight up each and every session
obviously you won't be able to do any pressing for the chest
shoulder movements first
something like

shoulder press: 5 x 5
lat raise: 3 x 8-12
hammer hi row: 2 x 5
hammer BTN pulldown: 1 set ~ 8-12
pec dec/cable x-over: 2-3 x 6-8
bis: 1-2 set
tris: 1-2 sets

Hi,
the 2 hammer things- are they the normal hammer pull down and hammer seated rows?
why no chest pressing at all?
All the above would be done twice a week then mate? plus squat/leg press once a week and sldl/back ext once a week

quote:

for 1 month do shoulders on there own, and hit them really hard.
do something like 10 sets of db press. starting at a weight you can do 12 on working down to 6 ish.
then do 5 sets of side raises, 5 sets upright rows, 10-12 reps.
the anterior deltiod does not need any extra work as db press will hit it very hard as will benching etc, rear delt will be hit from up rows and other rows enough.

low volume obv isnt working so u should try a change, and those 3 exersises are the best for shoulders imo

10sets?!!! like 5 ets db and 5 sets BB?

quote:

You might respond well to training your shoulders more frequently or focusing more on that bodypart for a while. Make overhead pressing your main shoulder exercise and focus on increasing strength in that exercise. You don't tend to see many people who can lift a lot on the military press with small shoulders. You could also vary the rep ranges try low med and high reps....

What's your bench like compared to your Military Press ?

More often possiably yeah, I really am working hard at Military press though. Adding rougly a 1kg a week adding in a couple of push presses at end sometimes even if i complete my strict reps. I think if i continue with my current routine (which i sort of want to despite the small delts issue), maye doing miliary/ side raises before i do chins/ pulls downs on my "day 3"?

Currently Military 48.5kgx12, 51kgx10 52.5kgx8 (plus 2 p/press) 56kgx4 (plus 3 p/press) [disaster last wek!)
Current BEnch (DB's) 30x12 32.5x9 35x8 37.5x4

Last week after starting this thread I followed military with side raises then i added in 2 sets of bent ov3er lateral supersetted wih 2 sets front raises x10 reps. Shoulders were dumb. Couldnt lift my arm above my head for 10minutes.

quote:

Am I the only thinking there is nothing wrong with the shoulders? Are they not proportional to the rest of the body or something?

What mine? - I'm afraid they're ****e I have some width on my body viewed from side but there's no front delt development or real medial delt development

quote:

Train overhead 2x per week. Once with 3 or 4 sets of 8ish reps Military Press. Once with HEAVY push press working up to 3x3.

All these raises are counter productive in my experience as they cause significant wear and tear on the shoulder without benefiting as much as overhead pressing.

I suppose thats worth a try and keep rest of my week the same apart from day 3?

Thanks lads

Rodge

an update:-
well just for now (well started today) I threw an 2 sets of seated DB presses after Military, did chins and pull dows then the lat raises followed my bent over lateral 2 sets supersetted with front raises.

Old day:

Chins (weighted) 3x10
cg lat pull down 12,10,8
Miliary Press 12,10, 8, 6
Lat raise 3x10-12

New Day:

Militay Press 12,10,8,6
Seated DB ohp 2x8
Chins 3x10
cg lat pull down 12,10,8
Lateral raises 3x10
bent over laterals/front raises (supersetted) 2x10

Any suggestions?

Rodge

Sorry to drag this thread up again but i'm still contemplating this (below)

pec dec/cable x-over: 2-3 x 6-8
bis: 1-2 set
tris: 1-2 sets

Does this mean do the above 2 twice a week?

Also just do lower body once a week or twice too? (even tough its just for maintaining)

The two hammer machines - you just sean a Hammer Strength lat p/dowm and seated row?

Would shoulder pres be standing or seated, BB or DB

Cheers

Rodge.

Pretty much as MonkFinger...
I tend to press with arms and strangly traps rather than delts, thats both chest and shoulder presses.

Recently a guy at the gym said forget all the presses, it's the raises that build your shoulders, do more of those.
So I started doing that and they are the best they have ever been... I just needed more work.

I now for shoulders I do:
2 presses (DB's or behind neck militerys and Smith machine shoulder press)
2 lateral raises (DB and cable)
2 rear delt (DB and machine)
1 cable front raise (I could drop this out TBH)
And a finisher like a triple drop on a machine shoulder press.

Ah! interesting stuff that John

as i may have said above i currently (well last time was)

Miliary Press 4 sets
Seated DB Press 3 sets
(Chins 3 sets)
(cg pull downs 3 sets)
Cable Lateral Raises 3 sets

As i'm still trying to keep to horizontal push pull day of my 4 day routine

There is probably no one answer, more than 1 way to skin a cat or along those lines.
My mate can do a press exercise and a raise exercise and that's it... his grew and mine didn't. We had to fit shoulders into about 20 mins worth of time in the gym when I used to go to night school at college.
He got strech marks his grew that well... and mine just stayed weak and got more and more out of proportion.

However IMHO if you cover all the bases... do heavy first and then wear them down with volume and hit from all angles you give them no choice.
You have covered most stimulas and if you eat and rest you won't suffer from overtrainining... especially with a light week or week off throw in sporadically.

This less is more thing I hear people say sometimes on the forum just doesn't reflect what I see in real life.
If less is adequate then you are lucky... like my friend.
But if that isn't working more actually is more.
You will get less people buying into this as the work ethic feels 10 fold, takes more time but when I see the intensity and volume that the competative guys at the gym are putting in it makes it obvious, go the extra mile and get the extra results.

That makes a lot of sense again John.
I think i may up the weight and lower the reps of my military's as i do 12,10,8 & 6 reps currently then do hiher reps for DB presses, db lats cables bent over lateral etc.

worth a go aint it!

cheers

Rodge
