So many questions....so little time! - 18 March 2008 16:49
Before posting a question or your diet, could you please:-

1) Look at the last five pages of threads in case your question has been answered recently.

2) Read the Articles in case your question is answered there.

3) Provide clear information as to stats & goals and foods, drinks & supps including times & amounts.

This would save a lot of time. Cheers, Nige.

4) Ensure that you're eating enough omega-3 fats. Tinned tuna, white fish and nuts are not good sources of omega-3 fats. 125g of sardines in tomato or one third of a 213g tin of wild red salmon (incl skin & bones) contain a day's supply of omega-3 fats. If you don't like oily fish, see http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/m_2624421/mpage_1/tm.htm#2625002 for a recommended daily dosage of Omega-3 supps.

5) Use the search facility.

6) Read the newsletters, including back-issues (something that I forget to do sometimes).

7) Use http://www.nutritiondata.com/ to find out what's in stuff.

Seems like the repetition has got to you huh. Should sticky this with title in Capital letters and send out this info to new joining members upon registration.

Repetition? What repetition? I (and probably also TIO/Drewsky/James etc) are only here for short periods of time each day, so I'm trying to get people to do a bit of research before asking questions, to reduce the sheer volume of questions.

I can't make threads sticky and there is a limit as to how many stickies there can be. TT used to have a sticky with advice for posting questions. Maybe.....?

Maybe a short newsletter article explaining their brief importance in the diet and 2-3 practical ways to include them?

the problem with O3 is no one sees the need for it.
ive never eaten an oily fish in 21 years of living.
i started taking O3 a couple weeks ago, i feel the same and look the same.

i still do not see the benefit, but i will take it anyway as i know its required.

What form of O3? How much? What is rest of diet?

Though it is possible to "get by" with limited intake, some fare better than others - it sounds like you may be one of them.

why is tinned tuna not a good source of O3 ? Even if it's Tuna in olive oil?

What is the RDA for Omega 3's Nige?

no recommended RDA but 450mg is seen as a good target for an average person, so for us 'advanced' bodybuilding folk a bit more is probably required.

The problem with newsletters (and I am as guilty of this as everybody else) is that once read, they're soon forgotten and I don't make a habit of searching through back-issues. How about a sticky (a bit like there used to be) "Read this first before posting" with all of the above hints & tips in?

450mg/day of EPA+DHA is 4.05kcals/day. If Joe average eats 2,500kcals/day, 4.05kcals/day is a mere 0.16% of total energy from omega-3. That's as pathetically inadequate as the 200iu/day RDA for Vitamin D3. Meh!

I sometimes wonder whether the high incidence (1 in 3 people at some time in their life) of depression/low mood is caused by a chronic deficiency in omega-3 & Vitamin D.

That's why I quote a figure of ~2,000mg/day to supplement with (hopefully, there's a little omega-3 already in the diet from other sources), which is 18kcals/day, or 0.72% of total energy for someone eating 2,500kcals/day.

Give it time. Fat-soluble nutrients take more than 2 weeks to take effect. Keep at it and you will soon be as clever as Zeke "the geek" Kinsky (not that I'm suggesting that you're not already clever, of course) The effect of omega-3 on mood appears so slowly that you may not even notice it. Even Prozac takes 4 weeks to have an effect FYI.

I'm not sure why, it just isn't if you read the label. It could be because tuna is such a large fish, you only get the "dry" part of the flesh in the tin, the "oilier" parts ending up in pet-food. Salmon is a smaller fish, so you get a whole cross-section through the fish in the tin, skin, bones & all.

This means that, whatever tinned tuna is canned in, there's very little omega-3 fat. Olive oil is ~1% omega-3 & ~9% omega-6, which is a lot better than sunflower oil which is ~1% omega-3 & ~70% omega-6.

So all tuna fish have O3s. I thought only certain species of tuna have O3s.
