I've been told that upright rows are good for working the lower trapezius muscles; however, I can't seem to do upright rows very well. Sometimes it makes my shoulders hurt, and they are just so awkward for me to do, for some reason. The only equipment that I have access too, doesn't seem to work properly in trying to do the upright rows (I use a cable machine that could best be described as similar to a bowflex...but with various differences). I've read that people who do these and get shoulder pain; but I've also read that 'pain' from upright rows is typical with some people due to the motion. What is a 'replacement' for upright rows, to work the lower traps? I work the upper with shrugs.

Shrugs, use dumbbells or a bar, they both work.

As above, deads and shrugs are easily the best imo....upright rows give many people injuries. I avoid them totally

For most people the upright row is a no-no. I spoke to two people today who were having trouble.... As above and in addition try these ones Snatch grip deads (all over mass maker) Snatch pulls (huge training stimulus)

Always make sure you start off with lightweights if your gonna do upright rows. I just do them with dumbbells and find i dont get injured like i did with a bar. Other than that deads and shrugs as mentioned above.

Dont shrug after every deadlight rep, deadlift is energy consuming enough as it is.

IMO you could just get more out of it double overhand but there's probably not that much in it.
