jmr1068204 -> Working out trapezius muscles? (Mar. 24 2008 23:41:42)

I've been told that upright rows are good for working the lower trapezius muscles; however, I can't seem to do upright rows very well. Sometimes it makes my shoulders hurt, and they are just so awkward for me to do, for some reason. The only equipment that I have access too, doesn't seem to work properly in trying to do the upright rows (I use a cable machine that could best be described as similar to a bowflex...but with various differences). I've read that people who do these and get shoulder pain; but I've also read that 'pain' from upright rows is typical with some people due to the motion.

What is a 'replacement' for upright rows, to work the lower traps? I work the upper with shrugs.

Keyboard Hero -> RE: Working out trapezius muscles? (Mar. 25 2008 0:00:00)

deadlifts

cliff_vtr -> RE: Working out trapezius muscles? (Mar. 25 2008 0:50:12)

deadlifts or shrugs

Shrugs, use dumbbells or a bar, they both work.

As above, deads and shrugs are easily the best imo....upright rows give many people injuries. I avoid them totally

Dont bent over bb rows work traps at all?

waylander -> RE: Working out trapezius muscles? (Mar. 25 2008 12:41:01)

deadlift

For most people the upright row is a no-no. I spoke to two people today who were having trouble....

As above and in addition try these ones

Snatch grip deads (all over mass maker)
Snatch pulls (huge training stimulus)

Always make sure you start off with lightweights if your gonna do upright rows. I just do them with dumbbells and find i dont get injured like i did with a bar. Other than that deads and shrugs as mentioned above.

Do you guys shrug on each deadlift rep?

Yes mate, without a doubt
If done slightly more upright they are probably thee best trap/mid back builders in my opinion

Still the traditional way, or as more of a yates row?

rogerthedog -> RE: Working out trapezius muscles? (Mar. 26 2008 3:20:01)

Any kind of row will do.

muscleman2008 -> RE: Working out trapezius muscles? (Mar. 26 2008 9:06:34)

Dont shrug after every deadlight rep, deadlift is energy consuming enough as it is.

Drew you say upright rows are a no no,ive never tried snatch pulls before but from seeing clips they look like an explosive wide grip upright row with leg hip drive?

Power shrug at the end of a deadlift rep are an excellent combo imo.

IMO you could just get more out of it double overhand but there's probably not that much in it.

Does anyone recommend doing shrugs and deads in the same workout?

Deads
Rows
Shrugs

OoOGazOoO -> RE: Working out trapezius muscles? (Mar. 26 2008 14:28:29)

Yes, sounds fine.

That is a common split.

Back and traps.

sheriff_jonny -> RE: Working out trapezius muscles? (Mar. 26 2008 16:58:05)

i work with a back and traps split. I deadlift and do db shrugs at the end of the workout to isolate my traps
