I have 2 goals:

1) lose fat which is currently in the middle of my stomach- there due to a poor diet prior to gymming

2) upper body strength/muscle in upper body.

One thing that concerns me, is that the two may be contraditrocy. I.e. in looking to gain muscle and strength, I am consuming more food- especially protein and at the same time, I am looking to lose fat. I don't know if it's possible to lose fat and gain muscle at the same time? Having said that, the fat I want to lose is on my stomach and the muscle will be on my upper-body so they are on different areas of the body.

Can anyone advise?

I've started doing 100 sit-ups a day but not sure if this would help me at all.

Once I have lost the fat, I want to tone it- not to a 6 pack though.

Will only cardio lose the fat, or are there exercises I could do at the gym also that would help- bear in mind my other goal also.

Thanks.

It doesn't really matter which areas on the body you are wanting to either lose fat or gain muscle upon, the fact is that to cut or bulk, you have to be in 2 different metabolic environments, which are contradicting really.

Concentrate on 1 goal and put all your efforts towards that.

sorry i seem to have not done this. see below then!...

So...

Any particular weight-training & cardio you would recommend?

Daveo set me (for my other goal of upper-body strength/muscle:)- which I am happy to forget about or until I lose the stomach fat and tone this up. Maybe not to a 6-pack but see how I feel.

Monday
deadlifts (with barbell)
chin-ups or pull-ups or heavy lat pulldowns
bent-over rows (with dumbell)

Wednesday
bench press (with barbell)
military press (with barbell) or shoulder press (with dumbell)
dips

Friday
squats with bar or squats with ball or squats with dumbell or leg press machine
adductor
rotary calf

Good to keep? Will doing e.g. 100 sit-ups a day help me also or using the pectorial fly machine and doing ab crunches with the ball?

looks good to me, just make sure the intensity is high, what rep/set system you using?

and whats with the 100 sit up thing, are you another one of those 'i wanna look lke brad pitt in fight club' people?

you can do crunches with weights etc, would be nicer, but i don't exercise abs on their own i couldnt care about the abs, worry about them when i got everything else sorted

got some advice on http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/m_2589936/mpage_2/key_/tm.htm

planning on 5 x 5.

a friend of mine who has bulked up with a clean diet and no supplement said he and a friend done 300 sit-ups a day, stopping for a rest after every 100 and within a month they had it...but he emphasised you need to be eating the right foods or it's pointless.

I'm not saying I want the 6 pack but I do want to lose 1.5inches from my stomach and then tone this up.

You cant spot reduce fat, or build mass together.
Concentrating on ab training will not tone or shape that area alone.
Diet is the firts trick, and most important. After that is cardio, and then a good weights routine to develop shape in the muscle.
Looking leaner will increase the perception of muscle sixe by definition.
Once you have lost fat allover and are looking leaner and stronger, look to incorporate some weighted crunches for your abs into your training.

Diet - cardio - weights........

If i was you i will concentrate on sorting my diet and lots of cardio. You can do weights as well, but i would try and get the fat down a bit before adjusting your diet to try and add muscle. Then you could ease up a little on the cardio.

What about training legs?

By training legs effectively you are increasing the amount of growth hormones going around your body by about 50%. Growth hormones are a natural and effective fat burner.

I never heard of an actual amount of GH stated. Have a you a reference to this source only it sounds a little unbelievable.

Hello,

You shouldn't work your abs every day, Its the same as every other muscle, theres only so much you should work it usually twice a week and why only do one type of abs exercise, why not vary what you do and try different ones out? you can get some good ones from www.bodybuilding.com

thanks for this.

got a plan from my fitness instructor. people on this forum suggested i do 40mins cardio on every day that i am not doing weights but he said 40mins will move into the losing muscle stage. 20mins should be enough and on says i do e.g. chest and shoulders but with this i do need to hit my heart rate, which is around 140. ive seen gains so far 2 months in from his program so im going to stick with it.

It is so hard to lose lots of fat without losing some muscle I was 13st 7 with 22%bf currently doing frankies 5x5 but my main hobby is bodycombat in 1hr i will burn over 900cals since feb i've gone down to 12st4 and bf is about 15ish I've also lost 20kg in deadlift etc because of muscle loss. I'm just going to keep it up until i get to about 12% bf and then cut the cardio down and work on the lean muscle gain.
