ORIGINAL: Fat Pete According to my reckoning there must be about eight of you. Nice to have you all aboard, Post some pics for the nice ladies and gents, you are a very handsome chap, but that singlet, those shoes, how can you not ? Hi Pete. I've just got a new pair of golden trainers that glisten even more than their predecessors. Shiny gold with a black swoosh, to better match the gold and black F6 - and reduced from £90 to £25. Couldn't resist when my daughter pointed them out! I haven't figured out how to post pictures on here. It keeps telling me they are too big. Tell you what. Go on my blog - http://martinsgoldenblog.blogspot.com and there's lots of pictures - mostly of my dogs, but a few lifting related ones as well including a couple of good ones Bryn took at the British Bench.

Friday bench session. No one to help me with the shirt, so I resorted to plan B - heavy raw with one purple band. 60 for 8 x 3 sets to warm up. Then one purple band on and 60 for 5 80 for 5 100 for 3 110 for 3 120 for 2 130 for 2 140 for 2 (PB) 145 - failed 130 for 2 (failed 3rd) 120 for 3 110 for 4 100 for 5 End. Not the most volume I've ever got through, but every rep with 100 or more was hard, hard, hard, plus I still had a bit of Wednesdays two-band stuff in my arms. I came out feeling like I'd had a mega bench session. Crazy that I did a pair with 140 without too much difficulty and then couldn't do a single with 145 5 minutes later, but that's the thing with bands. If the technique and belief isn't 100%, it doesn't go up. Simple as! I've decided to slightly amend my plan next week. I'm going to bench Monday/Wednesday/Friday again, then that's it. Shirt Monday, speed Wednesday, and a comfy opener on Friday to a 2 inch board and that's me done.

Bar for 10 40 for 10 60 for 8 80 for 6 100 for 4 120 for 3 140 for 2 160 for 1 (failed 2nd) 150 for 2 (failed 3rd) End!!! The arms just didn't feel right. I worked mega hard on Friday and they just haven't recovered, so I had a choice - do I keep on struggling through a workout, make no strength gains, and risk injury and/or delay repair, or do I just leave it until the strained feeling passes? I chose the second - did what I'd advice someone else to do. This every other day is clearly too much. Don't know how the Greeks manage it. Either that or the heavy plus a band is just brutal. Whatever, I'm only doing one more bench session before the worlds. It'll be Thursday night if my arms are ok by then, otherwise Friday, leaving me a clear week. All I've got to do is a couple of board presses and a single touch with my opener and that's me done.

Hi Golden O, Just had a read through the journal - very interesting. Sorry for being thick, but can you explain about 'bands' - what are they? how are they used? I only learnt about 'boards' the other week - it's all very new to me Thanks Sam

You should do a little vid sometime of the bands you know mate. Think quite a few people would find it interesting. It looks hard enough just watching you guys doing it for me to even try.

Here's one of me with one band taken a few weeks ago. The one band workout is brutal! See above. I enjoy two band stuff far more. It's easier off the chest and works lockout more specifically. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OUjU3b0abnk I'll do a two band vid when I get back from Bratislava. You should join us for a play - hernia permitting, of course.

Pretty awful session tonight. Refelections and excuses to follow, but first the numbers. Supposedly the last session before flying out. 60 for 8 x 3 sets 80 for 6 x 2 sets 100 for 4 x 2 sets 120 for 3 x 2 sets 140 for 2 150 for 2 Competition shirt on. Plan is to hit 192.5 to a 2 inch board and slam it up. 192.5 to 4 board - fail 192.5 to 4 board - good 192.5 to 2 board - got it up but foot flew in the air, generally awful technique. Shirt off and 100 for 10 Facepulls sets of 10 with 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 Reverse Flyes - 5 sets of 10 with 5 plates. I just felt totally flat tonight. The guys I normally train with decided to do incline bench tonight. I probably did too much warm up but I was worried about the arm strain so took it nice and slow. But if I was reading someone else's log, I'd say they'd done too much - so I guess I did too much! Also, I didn't respect the 192.5 nearly enough. Just because I've done 200 once in my life while flooded with adrenaline, that doesn't mean 192.5 has suddenly become light. A lesson learned! I was also using the ****tiest bar in the gym and I don't even know if I was gripping at the right place. The first attempt, the belt was a notch too loose and the shirt was on my adam's apple. 2nd and third attempts it was locked in better. I really don't want to fly out on the back of that session. If there's no after effects from tonight, I'm going in Saturday afternoon, minimum warm up, 192.5 to a 2 inch board, and then walk away. I'll probably get nagged about not resting enough, but I think the psychological damage of not doing that will be greater than the physical damage of doing it. It will still give me six days rest before I lift next Friday afternoon. I had a great plan - great on paper that is! Roll on Saturday and, hopefully, redemption and restoration of spirit.

Flying out to Bratislava tomorrow for the World Masters Bench. Should be fun. Will report how things went on Sunday evening, if the dogs don't eat the computer while I'm away.
