Shoulders tonight. Forgetting the warm up sets...

Shoulder Press Machine (hinged) - 5 sets of 8 with 40 kilos a side
Incline Bench Press - 60 for 8 x 3 sets; 70 for 8; 80 for 8
Upright Rowing - sets of 10 with 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 plates
Machine Side Lateral Raises - 5 sets of 10 with 4 plates

Did incline with shoulders because it's very incline and works front delts more than pecs. Not done these in over two years so there was some trepidation but they went ok once I got used to pressing on a completely different line. I'll just take it nice and gradually. I felt a tweak in the left shoulder on the last set of upright rows, so I'll keep it 7 plates and below for the time being.

Nice to be doing different things and not busting a gut on every rep!

Enjoy taking it easy!

Not easy, mate, just different. The body's not used to doing 8s, so they're hard. And tonight was as hard as I've worked for ages. The close grip sets with the bands were just pure pain, every last one.

Speed bench tonight. Just me and Little Dave.

100 for 3 x 9 sets (three standard, three wide, three narrow)
80 + 2 bands for 3 standard, 30 seconds rest, then 3 narrow x 5 sets
Cable Flyes - sets of 10 with 5, 7, 9, 9, 9
Machine Flyes - sets of 10 with 8, 10, 12, 12, 12.

That was bloody hard. Not done close grip with bands before. Not done any flyes since before shoulder injury. Doms setting in already.

Lat Pulldowns - 5 sets of 10 with 10 plates
Seated T Bar Rows - 5 sets of 10 with 10 plates
Facepulls - 5 sets of 10 with 8 plates
Reverse Flyes - 5 sets of 10 with 6 plates
Curls in Squat Rack - 5 sets of 10 with 30 kilos

Bit of a walk in the park tonight. Everything nice and manageable except biceps, and that was sore wrists rather than sore arms - even wearing wrist wraps. I think I may have to stick with dumbells. Some bench coaching interspersed between sets.

A reaquaintance with compounds today, after some time away.

Overhead Press - 5 sets of 8 with 40 kilos
Deadlifts - 5 sets of 5 with 100

Planned dips and hammers as well, but the young lad on duty in the gym today decided he wanted to close at 3.30 because the gym was quiet!!

Hadn't done overheads for several weeks, so decided to stay light and enjoyed them. I'll up the 8s to 45 next week. Similarly with deadlifts. I'm not going to make 185 by 18th May, so the pressure is off and I can focus on technique and progressive strengthening of tendons and ligaments. The technique today felt spot on, better than ever before. I was pushing the feet through the floor, so to speak, and the bar flew up.

Enjoyed everything but the early finish!

At least someone noticed! 'Twas late and the gym was almost empty. Something I always wanted to do.

Bench tonight with Paul, Joey, John WWW and Big Dave. Warm up, then...

122.5 for 8 x 5 sets
100 + 1 band for 5 x 5
Dips - 3 sets of 10.

Forgot until afterwards that I should have done 3s with the band with the same bar weight as the 8s. Not to worry. 5s worked me well. Doesn't read like much, but I worked pretty hard tonight. Up another 2.5 kilos next week. Seemed weird lifting less weight than the others. Such is the joy of deloading. Only second time I've done dips in about 18 months, so they hurt a bit, but they'll bring me on once I get into them again.

Speed Bench tonight

100 for 3 standard grip/30 seconds rest/3 wide grip x 3 sets
100 for 3 standard grip/30 seconds rest/3 close grip x 3 sets

2 purple bands on and
80 for 3
90 for 3
100 for 3 x 2
90 for 3
80 for 3
60 for 10 flush set

Cable Flyes - 5 sets of 10 with 8 plates
Dips - 3 sets of 10.

Really felt my right elbow tonight. A difficult pain to explain - something between a trapped nerve sensation and a muscle strain, a carryover from my accident in 1980 when I smashed my leg up and also broke my arm in two places. Dips really hit it, but I'll persevere unless it gets worse.

Bit disappointed to find the guys I was supposed to be training with tonight just finishing their workout as I arrived. I don't mind training alone - I quite like it, in fact - but I would have preferred to train at 4.00 today and didn't so as not to let others down. Not the first, or the second, or the third time this has happened this year. I think it's about time I started training at a time that suits me, which I will do from now on.

That gripe apart, quite pleased with tonight's session. 8s again next Monday, a triples session the Monday after, then 8s all the way to the British Raw. I should get there unpeaked yet pleasantly rested and refreshed. Looking forward to it.

Title to defend, mate! plus who knows in the open if the big shirt lifters stay away? Got second in the open last year...

I'll be there both days. I've got a new 75 Kilos junior lifting on the Saturday.

You going to be there, Iain?
