Sorry for this random comment, but when I read the name of your log I instantly imagined golden showers...

You're not Dai's mate with the glass-topped coffee table, are you?

Ha no, but I know someone who has a table like that for exactly the implications you're making

Implications? Me?!! I think you confuse me with an implier! Maybe the guy you know is dai's mate? Anyway, tonight's session, interspersed with a bit of bench coaching...

Lat Pulldowns - 5 sets of 10 with 12 plates
Seated T Bar Rows (Hammer Grip) 5 sets of 10 - 1 with 12, 4 with 14.
Facepulls - 5 sets of 10 with 9 plates
High Curls - sets of 10 with 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 8
Low Curls - sets of 10 with 5, 6, 7, 6, 5, 4

Back got a good little seeing to, facepulls feel stronger than ever, bi's mega-pumped, what more can I say?! Proper lifting tomorrow - OH Press and Deadlifts.

No Martin won't be there. I gave up being a bench press specalist in '06! Not the biggest loss to the art of bench pressing!

Not my best day today, but we don't just record the good ones!

OH Press - 20 for 10, 30 for 8, 40 for 5, 60 for 5, 70 for f x 2, 50 for 5 x 5

Deadlift - 50 for 10, 70 for 5, 90 for 5, 110 for 5, 110 for 3, stopped!

Hypers - 5 sets of 15.

Felt a twinge in my ham on the second sets of 110 deadlifts, so walked away. I might be a wimp, but I'm an uninjured one! The bar turned in my hands (it's not straight) and I hurt myself trying to adjust. Should've just put it down and started again. Just can't get to grips with OH press yet. Mad that I've got a 165 raw bench but can't OH 70! It'll come, I know - just got to be patient. But daft that I can do 5 with 60 and then hit a wall 10 kilos heavier. Note to self - you haven't done shoulders properly for 18 months, don't try running before you can walk.

ME Bench today. warm ups, then...

125 for 8 x 5 sets. One purple band on and...

125 for 1 (failed 2nd)
100 for 3
105 for 3
110 for 3
115 for 3
120 for 3.

One word - BRUTAL. As hard a workout as I've had for a long, long time. The last rep on the last set of 8s was so, so hard. Next week, a break from 8s and I get a shirt on and do heavy 3s, the week after 8s with 127.5 - which I'm already dreading.

After the 8s I had an enforced 15 minute break and the 125 + band was just too heavy. But I took it down to 100 and back up to 120 and the 120s were nailed on. Technique got better every set.

Trained with John WWW and Big Dave today. John did 5 8s with 140 (he planned to do three sets) and then did a paused 170 with full commands (including a 10 second hold before the start command because he wouldn't keep his feet still - hard but fair, that's me!).

Back and biceps today, but mainly coaching Paul Kopec on bench between my sets. His first British is 31st May.

Seated T Bar Rows (Hammer Grip) - 5 sets of 10 with 14 plates
Lat Pulldowns - 5 sets of 10 with 12 plates
High Curls - sets of 10 with 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 8 plates
Facepulls - 5 sets of 10 with 9 plates.

From there to pub quiz, where I played on my own, came second, won a tenner, which paid for my Stella. Might be back next week...

Paul did 107.5 for 3 x 2 and 107.5 for 2 x 3, then 5 5s with 70 close grip, 3 sets of 10 dips, 5 sets of facepulls and numerous triceps pressdowns whilst I was showering. The plan was 5 3s with 107.5, but it wasn't quite there. Next week will determine his opener.

Shoulders and Inclines tonight...

Inclines

50 for 8
70 for 8
90 for 5
100 for 5
110 for 3
120 for 2
130 for 1 (PB)
120 for 2
110 for 3
100 for 4
90 for 5
80 for 6
70 for 8
60 for 10.

Shoulder Press (Machine) - Warm up, then 40-a-side for 5 x 5
Upright Rowing - 5 sets of 10 with 7 plates
Side Laterals (Machine) - 5 sets of 10 with 5 plates.

Took two hours, that lot. Decided to test out my 1RM on inclines tonight. Expected about 110, so 130 was a huge bonus. Shoulder presses finished off the shoulders completely, but still managed to do uprights and sides. The incline bench is very inclined, so is more shoulders than pecs, so I should be ok for speed bench tomorrow. I'll try the 70 OH again on Saturday - it's got to be there if I've got a 130 incline. Worked well tonight - best I've felt in the gym for ages. Long may it continue!

I'm wondering whether to keep this log active or not. Posts are mostly from people I know from other sites, only one 'hit' since my previous post. I'll keep it going up until the British Raw Bench at the end of the month and see what happens...

Cheers Iain. Shame about the log, but it does seem a bit pointless if it's getting hardly any hits. My Wednesday post was 599. My Thursday one was 601! As I say, I'll run it up to the results from the Raw Bench and either things pick up or it stops.

Speed bench. Don't think I was over last night's inclines, but went for it anyway. Warm ups, then...

100 for 3 normal/100 for 3 wide x 3 sets
100 for 3 normal/100 for 3 narrow x 3 sets

Two purple bands on and

80 for 3
90 for 3
100 for 3 x 2 sets
90 for 3
80 for 3
60 for 10

Dips - 2 sets of 10. Shoulders had had enough by then.
Cable Flyes - sets of 10 with 5, 6, 7, 8, 8, 8.

Good session. Feel wrecked!

Forgot to ask. The incline work is that specfic to improve you raw strength? More shoulder strength?

Both really, Iain, plus a bit of variety. I haven't done shoulders properly since about November 2006 before I got the injury. The incline is so steep I do it with shoulders rather than as part of my bench workout. A wise old trainer in a gym I used to go to once said that strong shoulders and back never harmed a bench press, so while I deload/back-off-the-3s-5s I'm going to hit them harder and more regularly.

I'm doing heavy bench next Monday (the one week in four has come round) so while I won't go near a 1RM it'll be interesting to see how the threes feel after four week off them.

Thanks for single handedly keeping my journal ticking over, btw!

I'm doing my best!

Funnily enough I have recently been doing more OHP work to help my raw bench. It will hopefully help me in the Suthern Meet up nxt weekend but gona keep OHPing as a consistant assistant lift from now on.

My OHs are still sh1te. I do them on a Saturday. 165 raw bench. 130 incline bench. Can't do a 70 OH! Got to get better... I find the hard bit is holding it pre-press. I'm too inflexible to rest the bar on my shoulders, so I'm struggling before I even start pressing.

Dont jack it yet mate, i did with mine as no one was posting but to be fair i wasnt training so it was pointless anyway. You could help quite few poor benchers on here if they knew where to ask...

I'll give it a bit longer, mate, see if they find me! How's your hernia?

Tonight's workout - Back and Biceps

Lat Pulldowns - 5 sets of 10 with 12 plates
Seated T Bar Rows - 5 sets of 10 with 15 plates
Facepulls - 5 sets of 10 with 9 plates
High Curls - sets of 10 with 5, 6, 7, 8.

Just a little tickover and balancing session. High curls aggravated the spot where I had golfers elbow last year, so they'll have to go. Probably replace them with dumbell curls. Spent a bit of time coaching bench again tonight, and have decided to move my speed bench to Fridays from now on and train with the two lads I've coached the last three Fridays. That gives me a day off Thursdays, an extra day recovery between inclines and speed bench, but less rest between speed bench and OH Press. We'll see how it goes. Seems like a plan.

That's some strong benching there, it's one exercise I'm loathe to cut back on as I increase muscular endurance instead.

Having someone your age ( Don't punch me) lifting that much is pretty inspirational. Keep up the good work.

You dont get to be British champion over night though...

I have a consultation in the hospital on monday so i should know more then.
I actually made in into the gym on thursday but ended up only staying for 20 odd mins. No enthusiasm, cant train hard anyway and its was also very hot in there. I did go to do cardio but with the heat i did a bit of bench and some arm work and jacked it in, spent most of the time popping the lump back in anyway.

Thanks! What's stopping you from combining general endurance work with specific bench strength work? They needn't be mutually exclusive. Whatever floats your boat is good.
