Something different today. Had my workout in Preston Prison. I was giving a bench demo/coaching session and motivational talk, so the demo was my workout.

Bar for 10
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 5
100 for 3
120 for 2
140 for 1
160 for 1 (sweet as a nut)

Loose shirt on (48F6)

180 to 8 and 6 inches
180 to 6 and 4 inches
180 to 4 and 2 inches
180 to 2 inches and touch

Two Purple bands on and

60 for 3
100 for 3
110 for 3

1 purple band on and

100 for 3
120 for 3
130 for 3.

Not a bad little workout. Bit of a change from the usual. 180s felt like nothing, even in loose shirt, that augors well. Presentation went down great as well, so a good day all round.

No mate. I came home smelly but unsullied.

Joking aside, the lads today were the best audience I've ever had. Quite superb.

What did you go there for then? As in what type of speech?
Ive just watched a prog on national geographic about weight lifting in American jails and they were saying its the only way everyone bonds together. Interesting stuff.

I do motivational talks for a living. The plan here was 50% coaching and demo lifting on the bench, 50% motivational talk, but they were so into the lifting that that took up three-quarters of the session. Plus no one had ever heard of a bench shirt, bands, or boards. I only had time to give part of the motivational talk, but it was my first session in a prison so it was a learning session for me as well and I now have a better idea of how to pitch future presentations.

Interesting side note. I had to get CRB-checked beforehand. They don't let people with a criminal record into prison.

What sort of numbers were people benching?
That programme last night had some monsters lifting big weights. Not that ever want to go to jail but it actually looked like a good set up in the gym and a great atmosphere.

Inclines and shoulders tonight

Inclines

Bar for 10
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 5
100 for 3
120 for 1
137.5 for 1 (PB) - JUST!!! 300 pounds barrier cracked.
105 for 5 x 5 sets.

Totally buggered after that lot, but we carry on...

Machine Shoulder Press

15 a side for 10
30 a side for 8
45 a side for 5 x 3 sets

BTN Press

Bar for 10 x 5 sets. Last set, bar didn't rub down the back of my head, so flexibility already improving.

Steering Wheels - 10 kilo plates for 10 x 3 sets. Think plate raises are probably more effective.

Machine Side Lat Raises - 5 plates for 10 x 3 sets.

Hard workout, that. Chuffed with the 300 pound incline. Time to back off the 1RMs now that I've hit it and build up my 5s. More good news. I was 15/9 this morning, so no need for any sudden weight loss before the Raw Bench if I eat sensibly for the next week. Which I will!

It was only me benching, plus one volunteer so I had someone to coach. He did 115. His previous 1RM was 110.

Speed Bench. Warm up, then,

102.5 for 3 normal + 3 wide x 3 (only the second set was with 112.5 - forgot to take the fives off!)
102.5 for 3 normal + 3 narrow

2 Purple bands on and

62.5 for 3
82.5 for 3
92.5 for 3
102.5 for 3
112.5 for 3
102.5 for 3
92.5 for 3
82.5 for 3

Machine Flyes

7 plates for 10
10 for 10
13 for 10
15 for 8
17 for 8
17 for 8/13 for 8/8 for 10 downset - killer!

Basically last week's workout, but with 1.25 biscuits put on the bar and then forgotten about. If I can add 2.5 a week, I should be doing 200 kilo speed bench by next Easter. If only it was that easy

Thanks Iain. I think not on the OH. I'm only doing 70 atm - and that's a struggle. Bodyweight is the target - for now at least.

Thanks Andy! BW from racks this year is the plan - ideally at an Adlington Challenge. It'll give Mr Felix the opportunity to tell people he lifted with the golden one.

Most over 50s seem to have more sense than me, but to hell with it. I'm enjoying my second childhood.

They dont all have to have such long build ups. Mini events are as much fun and the beauty of them is we put them on when it suits us. When you're up for it I'll have a go with you. Thats 2, and thats how it starts.

My old man used to tell me, before he left this ****ty world, never to grow up before my time. Damn good advice I reckon

A day late, my Saturday workout...

Deadlifts

40 for 8
60 for 3
80 for 3
100 for 3
120 for 3
140 for 2 (pb, I think)
150 - fail
150 - fail
140 for 1
140 for 1
120 for 3
100 for 3.

Better deadlifts today. Trained them with Brian and Pete. I reckon it definitely helps to train deads with partners. Couldn't get the 150 moving, but I've not been over 105 for weeks and weeks so I can't be too disappointed.

OH Press

Bar for 10
30 for 8
40 for 5
50 for 3
60 for 1
72.5 for 1 (pb)
60 for 3 x 3 sets

Seated BTN Press

Bar for 10 x 5 sets. Flexibility definitely getting better.

I plan to keep training till Wednesday, then take three days off before the Raw Bench next weekend. Something slightly different planned for tomorrow's bench session.

Pleased with the OH pb, but 100 feels a very long way away!

Last flat bench session before Sunday. Good and bad. The 'something new' today was to use a black mini band on all the sets. If I can do my planned opener with a mini on, that augors well.

Today's workout (everything plus a black mini)

Bar for 10
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 2
120 for 1
130 for 1
140 for 1
150 for 1
155 for fail x 2 attempts
145 for 1

Facepulls - 5 sets of 10 with 9 plates. Finish.

Woke up this morning (didododo) with a nasty sore throat and feeling lousy. Apparently there's a lot of it about, but it's not a bad one. All the training's done and hopefully whatever bug I've got will have been and gone by Sunday. But today was not as good as it could have been. I wanted 155 plus a black and it just wasn't there. Had two goes but nothing doing. Technique gets you so far but there comes a point where if you're not strong enough it ain't moving. And today I wasn't strong enough. But I worked hard, as was evident from how hard the 145 was!

All being well, back tomorrow, inclines and shoulders Wednesday, then rest until Sunday. For those would would counsel more rest, remember that I'm not peaking for this comp, it's being treated as a 1RM test, and four days rest is more than enough for one of them.

Paul Kopec DID manage his opener with a black band on. He's looking good for Saturday.

Last workout pre-comp. Pressfest tonight!

Bench Press

60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
120 for 2
140 for 1
145 for 1
150 for 1
155 for 1
160 for 1
155 for 1
150 for 1
145 for 1
140 for 1
120 for 2
100 for 4
80 for 6
60 for 8

Incline Bench Press

60 for 8
80 for 6
110 for 5 x 3 sets
80 for 6
60 for 8

Harder than I intended. Hope I recover in time. The post-160 155 and 150 were both real grinders. Planned to do facepulls as well, but 'twas too busy. I'll do some horns at home later instead. Cold improving. Weight 100 kilos dead. Roll on Sunday!
