Golden Oldie -> A Golden Log (Apr. 2 2008 19:38:26)

Hi guys, I've been posting on here for some time now but never had my log here. I keep my log on Sugden Barbell and PLUK, but there's some folk on here who don't go there that I know either face to face or in cyberspace. Now that I've mastered the intricacies of copy and paste, there seems no reason not to keep a log on here as well.

A little bit of background about me. I'm a competitive bench presser. I only bench competitively because of a serious leg injury that I suffered in 1980, but I've recently tried my hand at deadlift with a view to getting competitive at some point in the future.

I compete with both BWLA and BDFPA and lift in the 100 Kilo Class. In BWLA, I am M2 (over 50) British Bench Press Champion Equipped and Unequipped and hold both British records. The records are 200 kilos and 165 kilos respectively.

In BDFPA, I am the M3 (over 50) British Equipped and Unequipped champion and record holder as well. My numbers are 185 and 160 in BDFPA. I am also the WDFPF M3 world champion in both equipped and unequipped disciplines and equipped world record holder.

My ultimate target was always 200 kilos, but I got that on 9th March, so now the target has changed to 500 pounds. I think when I achieve that it will be something special - no tested British lifter over 50 has ever pressed that much before, so it's nothing if not ambitious. My 200 bench earned me fourth place in the seniors as well as winning me the M2 title.

I am passionate about my sport, both in terms of my own performance and in terms of getting the sport more widely promoted and recognised.

I am also a 100% lifetime natural lifter. I have no problem with people who aren't, unless they lift against me and, in so doing, cheat.

I've developed a bit of expertise in the bench press over the years, although I'm the first to admit I'm still learning, and would be happy to pass on some of that knowledge to anyone who is interested in going down the powerlifting route.

That's probably enough for a first post. I'll post my last few workouts over the course of the next hour or so.

Golden Oldie -> RE: A Golden Log (Apr. 2 2008 19:40:58)

Monday 17th March, it's bench time, and tonight it was at Catts. Apart from enjoying the company of Wayne and Dai, I wanted to find out once and for all if that 44 was useable. Short answer - it's just too tight. I had 200 on the bar and couldn't get near the 8 inch board. But Dai got a great cardio session trying to get it on me!

Other than that, tonight's session went as follows...

Bar for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
120 for 2
140 for 2
160 for 2 (much easier than last Thursday's pair - it'll be a triple before Bratislava)

48 F6 on

180 to 6, 4, 2 inch boards
180 to 6, 4, 2 inch boards
180 to 4, 2 and touch.

Nine good reps. Much better than last Thursday. Weight goes up to 182.5 next time and we do it all again...

2 purple bands on and

50 for 3
70 for 3
90 for 3
110 for 3.

The clock showed five to nine, everything felt shot, left it there. That three rep stuff to a reducing board feels really good. I think it will bring my equipped lifting on significantly. The last rep, to the chest, flew up, which gives me confidence to open on 192.5 in the tighter shirt in Bratislava. Good session, pleased with what I did and what I learned tonight.

Golden Oldie -> RE: A Golden Log (Apr. 2 2008 19:44:14)

Monday 24th March. I was hit by a really bad dose of manflu within hours of the workout in Catts and was good for nothing for the next week. This was Easter Monday's workout...

First time back in the gym today since last Monday. It's been a really bad dose, it's still lingering, but there comes a point where you have to at least do something to keep atrophy at bay. Went in without any real plan in mind, other than don't go too heavy, try and get some light speed stuff in.

Bar for 10
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
120 for 2
140 for 1
150 for 1
160 for 1
100 for 3 x 3 sets
110 for 3 x 3 sets
120 for 3 x 3 sets
Finish - no stamina for a flush set today.

The gym was virtually deserted today. All sets, apart from the 160, were done without a hand off/spot. The spotter touched the 160, but it was already on the way before he did it, so no worries there.

The speed work wasn't Westside style. Every rep was controlled down, paused for about half a second, then fired off the chest as fast as possible. Daft, but the 120s felt lighter than the 110s.

Reflections. Possibly the most important work out of the year. Why? Well, I managed to drag myself in when every fibre of my being wanted another day off. That could have turned into another week... Plus I did a raw 160 with the flu, ffs. Even my fragile psyche can understand that if I can do 160 feeling like this (and off creatine as well) then 160 has turned into a pretty safe comp opener.

Every cloud has a silver lining. Panic over!

Golden Oldie -> RE: A Golden Log (Apr. 2 2008 19:46:25)

Thursday 27th March... I'm totally exhausted by the evening, so decided to train at 2.00 and see if that made any difference. All sets done without a hand off or spotter. The gym was empty when I arrived.

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 3
110 for 3
120 for 3
130 for 3
140 for 3
150 for 3
140 for 4
130 for 5
120 for 6
110 for 7
100 for 8
End.

Greatly exceeded expectations. Roll on Saturday! I'll do some shoulder horn work at home tonight to keep the shoulders balanced.

Golden Oldie -> RE: A Golden Log (Apr. 2 2008 19:48:56)

Saturday 29th Workout...Saturday bench session - there's a novelty!

60 for 8 x 3 sets
80 for 6
100 for 4
120 for 2
130 for 2
140 for 2
150 for 2
162.5 for 1 (tried for a pair and failed second rep)
140 for 4

Speed work. 2 Purple bands on and

60 for 5
70 for 5
80 for 5
90 for 5
80 for 5
70 for 5
60 for 5.

Facepulls - sets of 10 with 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.
Reverse Flyes - sets of 10 with 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.

Decided to try speed work with 5s rather than 3s to get a bit more volume in, basically. Worked fine, every rep fast except rep 5 on 90. No hand offs on anything except the 162.5 and the 140 for 4.

The pair on 162.5 would have been a PB. Bit ambitious I guess, but I'd rather fail something I hadn't done before rather than something I had done (ie 160), if you can understand the mentality.

Delts and tris feel hammered. I'll get the loose shirt on on Monday. The flu doesn't seem to have taken much away from me, and it's nearly gone now. All guns will blaze on Monday.

Golden Oldie -> RE: A Golden Log (Apr. 2 2008 19:52:52)

Monday 31st March...Shirt lifting tonight.

Bar for 20
40 for 10
60 for 8
80 for 6
100 for 4
120 for 3
140 for 2

Loose (48) shirt on and...

180 for 3 (to 6, 4, 2)
180 for 3 (to 6, 4, 2)
180 for 3 (to 4, 2, touch)

130 for 5
120 for 8

Facepulls - sets of 10 with 6, 7, 8, 9, 10.

Pleased with that. Replicated what I did in Catts two weeks ago before the flu hit. Whoop de do. The boy is back!!! Next session Wednesday - speed work with bands.

Golden Oldie -> RE: A Golden Log (Apr. 2 2008 19:58:19)

And today's workout...Speed bench today.

Bar for 20 x 2 sets. Then 2 purple bands on and
60 for 3
70 for 3
80 for 3
90 for 3
100 for 3 x 2 sets
90 for 3
80 for 3
70 for 3
60 for 3. Then bands off and
100 for 3 x 10 sets
Facepulls - sets of 10 with 6, 7, 9, 10, 11
Reverse Flyes - 4 sets of 10 and 1 set of 20 with 5 plates.

Totally wrecked after that lot. The speed stuff seems to hit the joints far harder than the slower, grindier stuff, but needs to be done.

I normally train bench twice a week - heavy on Monday and speed on Thursday, but I lost some training time when I had the flu just before and just after Easter and I'm doing the IPF worlds in Bratislava in a couple of weeks, so I'm trying a very ambitious every other day training programme between last Thursday and Saturday 12th April. I've managed four so far. We'll have to see how recovery goes and see if I can keep it up! That's me pretty much up to date. Next bench session Friday, all being well.

Seemed rude not to, Iain, for the sake of a copy and paste of what I was doing anyway. Next outing is Bratislava - IPF World Masters Bench. I lift on Friday 18th April. Last session will be Saturday 12th, then MC the NW comp on 13th and have a few days away from gyms.

Golden Oldie -> RE: A Golden Log (Apr. 3 2008 21:48:56)

Deadlifts tonight!!!!! I hadn't done them for weeks, what with the British bench, the manflu, and the world bench in the offing, but tonight I managed to do a few. Started very light and tentative, as you do. Well, as I do.

40 for 10
50 for 10
60 for 8
70 for 6
80 for 6
90 for 4
100 for 3
120 for 1
130 for 1
140 for 1
100 for 3 x 3 sets.

Back felt totally wrecked, arse was near cramping up, hams were killing, but I got through it. Then tried incline sit ups, but the back was twinging so I left them and finished with 5 sets of 10 hypers. Left it there. Was going to do some lats, but the elbows still feel a little tender from yesterday's speed bench so left it there.

I don't honestly think I'll see 185 by mid May, but I'll keep plodding away and see what happens. If it has to wait till 2009, it has to wait until 2009! Anyway, I don't want to be one of these pussies who can't even bench what they can deadlift.[;)]

Golden Oldie -> RE: A Golden Log (Apr. 3 2008 21:54:28)

Taken from my blog, this will help explain what I am doing deadlifting wise...

Bench press is one of the three lifts that make up the sport of powerlifting. I came to the sport late in life, and do bench press only competitions because of a serious injury. In September 1980 I was involved in a serious car crash. Everyone tells me it should have been fatal, but somehow I survived.

The worst of several injuries was a compound double fracture to my right femur. In plain English, I broke my thigh in two places, and both breaks were exposed through the skin. Actually there wasn't any skin as such. I lost a good deal of muscle tissue from the outer and rear thigh and needed a major skin graft to cover the exposed area. All in all, I spent two months in traction, another four months in plaster, and the next two years after the plaster came off on crutches at first and then a stick. I could see the golf course from the hospital window and I was told the leg would never heal enough to get me round a golf course again. Eleven years later, I won the Western Isles Open.

I was inspired to take up lifting while watching the disabled powerlifting event at the Manchester Commonwealth Games. I started off in disabled lifting but, to cut a long story short, I wasn't disabled enough to meet the disability criteria. However through disabled lifting I discovered that I could do bench press only competitions as an able bodied lifter. The other lifts were out. I can not physically bend my right knee enough to do a legal squat, and the deadlift calls for a lot of thigh power and lower back strength. The accident had robbed me of half my right thigh and left the right leg bowed, which in turn threw my hip out and that had an effect on my lower back.

I now earn a living through motivational speaking and writing. My message, in a nutshell, is that winners are just dreamers who didn't quit. If you have a goal and you work hard enough, you can achieve it. My world titles and records show that you can adapt to disabilities and achieve great things.

People say that there's no such word as "can't". That's just glib nonsense, of course, however well meaning. If your left arm has been amputated, you can't win the world left-handed arm-wrestling championships. But you might win the right-handed title.

Only yesterday, I was reflecting on the message that I deliver in my talks. And something struck me. I can't squat. But I don't deadlift. There is a difference. Maybe I'll never be a deadlifting champion, maybe I'll never deadlift a lot, but that doesn't mean I can't deadlift. Maybe I'll injure my back. Well, maybe I will, maybe I won't. But I was just being a hypocrite if I didn't at least find out.

So I went into the back room and dug out a bar and some weights. I set it up to 47 kilos, and lifted it. Then 67 kilos. Success again. Then 77, then 82. Then I put 92 kilos on the bar just to see if I could manage a 200 pound+ lift. Up it went, and so did 100!

That was enough for one day. The leg held up just fine. The back was put under a lot of strain, but maybe I mollycoddle my back so much that it's weaker than it could be. Or maybe it'll give out in a couple of weeks and I'll have to abandon this madness. At least I'll find out, and I'll know one way or the other.

Deadlifting, for the uninitiated, consists of lifting a weighted bar off the floor until the knees are locked and the shoulders are retracted. Many consider it the oldest and purest test of strength. In the old days, he who lifted the heaviest weight off the ground was the strongest.

This morning, just out of interest, I checked on what the British qualifying standard and current record were for my age and weight. The British qualifying standard is 185 kilos. There is no current record holder. Chances are that if I can deadlift 185 by May, I'll get the British record and be on my way to the British title. Wonky leg and all.

So that's what this blog is all about. To record my progress in deadlift from ground zero to, hopefully, the British podium. And if I can do that with my wonky knee, thigh, hip and back at the age of 52, then it will surpass any of my other sporting achievements in one fell swoop and give more grist to the speaking mill. And if I fail? What's failure? It's just finding out that you can't do something as well as you want to. It's no big deal. The big deal is not even trying in case you fail. The big deal is the fear of failure. Lose that and a whole new world opens up for you.
