For the past 3 weeks now I haven't been able to do flat db press properly because of a pain in my left shoulder. This week I tried flat barbell press and just couldn't do it! It's only my left shoulder and I only feel the pain when I'm doing FLAT chest press (incline I don't feel it). I'm not sure what the cause is! Any ideas? Also what would be a good exercise to replace flat chest press? At least for the time being.

Another thing, my incline chest press feels like it's getting heavier each week... so I'm thinking it's the shoulder screwing me over or maybe I've hit a deadend! So I'm doing 40kg incline bench.. I drop back to 37.5 for one week then increase to 42.5 the following? Or how does that work again.

Hope you can help!
Jeff

Hi Jeff.

It could be a problem that you are going too heavy and your shoulders are taking more of the work than your chest.

Try and pinch your shoulder blades together before you started the exercises and stick your chest out.

Sound like you need to

a) give it a rest for a while - a week say
b) Change up your routine and do as Gaz says explore putting you shoulders in a better position when benching.

Where's the pain? Does it feel like it is underneath the anterior (front head) delt mid way up?

That is pain area alright. Only on my left shouler.. right doesn't feel any pain.

Next time I try them I'll lower the weight as get my shoulders poistioned better.

You mention it might be best to take a break.. I've been training now for 2 months solid and thinking of taking a week break. Think it's too early to take a break?

Cheers for the replies guys
Jeff

Take a break. It's only a week.

It sounds like impingement which means you are going to have to look at getting this sorted.

Yeah I've been looking impingement of the shoulder and it most likely what I have. I'll take a week break then try benching again with a ligher weight and good shoulder form. If it's still sore then I'll go see a doctor.

Thanks for the help!

Thats the problem I had took time of training made no difference, does your shoulder move round crunching sound/feel, if so I would get down to you dr and ask to be referred to a specialist and get x rays done. I had to wait a month, so get down to dr sooner rather than later you can always cancel if it gets better on its own.

When getting back to bench press I still felt something when warming up so I decided not the continue with the tradional way of chest press but to do power lifts instead which focuses more on your arms. But doing these I am complely pain free so I assume this still work the chest to a degree? I still do incline bench and dips so it should be ok to continue with the power chest press?

This is the chest press i do now: http://youtube.com/watch?v=xTAYAl4g7HE
