Hi all,
having a terrible year so far in terms of gym attendance! As a teacher I keep picking up colds and it knocks me out of my routine for a good 10 days at a time.

My question is this and no doubt one with a thousand answers but here goes. If I train solidly 3 times a week and then suffer a 2week lapse in my gym attendance how much condition will I loose and how long will it take me to get back to where I was?

It seems quite a while as I went back today first time in a good 2 weeks and my max lift has dwindled from 46kg dumbells on flat press to a weedy 36kg!(per dumbell) This is so de-motivating and bulk and muscle definitionn seem to drop off really quickly whilst not training. I am aware that this recovery time will vary from person to person but wondered if there was some rough rule eg 2 weeks off 4 weeks to get back to where you were.

Any advice or info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

No set answer really - it would depend on how ill you were, what your diet was like, stress levels and so on. So many factors to take into account that there isn't a ready formula to calculate how long it takes to get back up to speed

From personal experience I've had the odd couple of weeks off and it hasn't really affected my lifting at all. Back in the summer I had about 4 months off and when I trained again, I found that strength hadn't gone down all that drastically - only about 10kg for most lifts

I wouldnt worry too much, thats just the way it goes sometimes. I havent had a cold for months, yet I've had two in the last 3 weeks, so I've had to have about 4-5 days off each time. I dont feel as in good condition or shape, but I've trained a few times inbetween, and tried to keep my diet up. Im off on holiday for just over a week today, so I can rest and relax. But It means I havent had regular routine of workouts for a month. Although, on the up side, It will make me very motivated when I start again.

I think it also depends on how long you have been training, when i was much younger if i missed two weeks my strenght would go down significantly, these days two weeks dosent really make much difference might loose a slight bit of muscle stamina. Have you tried taking some supplements Vit C etc, to boost your immune system so you can ward off the bugs.

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. I thought there would be too many variables but at the same time there seems to be a formula for most things today so thought I'd enquire.

Stamina is definately the thing that has suffered but perhaps that's a refelction on my cardio-vascular fitness level which prob wasn't great before my bought of colds.

Been taking Zinc, Vit-C etc for a while now but the kids (I'm a teacher) seem determined to sneeze in my face as much as possible.

Taking it steady as I get back to the gym, maybe 3 different lifts per muscle group untill I'm feeling stronger. Even then I walk out feeling sick!

Think I'll take this opportunity to re-jig my routine a bit for the summer.

Thanks again everyone that replied.

not exactly an answer but....
How long have you been a teacher? My wife is about 5 years in. For the first 3 years she got colds every 2 seconds - now she hardly ever gets them. I think she must have assimilated every strain going!

Out of interest, why do you not train with a cold? Does it make you feel too bad? I've been training most of the winter with coughs and colds etc to no ill effect just needed to take wads of bog paper with me for the snots!
