Today was shoulder day for me, so i thought i'd do some shoulder shrugs for the first time, i had no idea what weight i should do so i started at 10kg and did 8 reps, i felt nothing so keeped moving up weights, and ended up at 22.5kg, but even after doing 8 i didnt feel like i was working much, but 22.5kg is just about as much my grip can hold as i hav pretty skinny arms. So should i stick with 22.5kg and just up the reps to maybe 15/20 and do 3 sets? the thing is im not working for muscular endurance, but for muscular strenght and size. Also am i right in thinking that shoulder shrugs work the part of the shoulders that connect to the neck, not the part that connected to the arm?

Personally, I never use this exercise. If your grip is restricting you, how about using straps? The muscle worked is the "trapezius".

yeah i was wondering this with shrugs too, should it hurt, they are a small and relatively dormant muscle so mate dont dont burn them out too much, id stick with the weight your at(maybe little more) and see how that goes then keep going up

With shrugs the ROM is very small so you can use quite heavy weights - for instance I currently shrug a lot more than I deadlift If grip is a problem I'd stick with the weights you're currently using and build up slowly when you're ready to handle more I think they're a decent exercise and I enjoy doing them, but if you're doing other exercises (for example, deadlifts, cleans, upright rows) they may not be necessary

our heaviest dumbells at our gym are 38kg which i can now bench, shrug, row easily so ive asked the owner for some 40kg dumbells i find dumbells easier to shrug than a barbell as your arms are in their natural position ( by your side) i do 3 sets of 20
