I seem to get a few problems with these when i'm squatting heavy, possibly one area thats holding me back in terms of progression.

Are there any exercises that will help strengthen them specifically?

Sit on your arse and CLENCH THOSE CHEEKS! Do this for an hour a day and you will actualy loose all the fat from your bottom while creating a behind to rival JLO's.

No idea sorry AK.

Gluteus medius, not gluteus maximus

Nice try though

Try the hip abductor machine or use a cable attached to your ankle and bring you leg out to the side.

Also stand sideways on a step on right foot with the left foot over the edge. Lower the left foot down to the floor and bring it back up as high as possible keeping both legs straight, ie using you glutes. Swap legs and repeat

These should make a difference

Hope that makes sense

Why do you want to strengthen this specific muscle?

Because using the anatomy chart and feeling where the soreness is after doing squats - it seems to make sense that this is the weakpoint

From one weakling to another; just do the big lifts. Targetting weakpoints is beneficial on a larger scale (ie. for my shirted bench I need more tricep strength). However, unless you're someone who's at a high level, with a coach who knows exactly what they're doing, focusing on stuff as small as this is crazy.

If you want to strengthen your squat, and you're finding your ass hurts, do general posterior chain stuff; rack pulls, goodmornings, pullthroughs, different types of squats, platform pulls, etc)

It's not my arse though, thats the point. It's the lower back musculature just above it thats the weak link.

I have bunz of steel
