One of my mates has this at home : http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41kgbzyw8hL._SS500_.jpg He does everything on it in one day - he does this every other day. Is this right? Seems to me it isn't. If this is right, then my bad. But if it's wrong can someone explain to me why please?

probably not the best way to train, but it depends on what he is training for. If it is general fitness and he is using light-ish weights then no problem. If its Bodybuilding or strength training then no.

Well he wants to get 'big'. He does the eating, that's a fact. But he stays skinny. I guess he's a hard gainer.

yes we call this overtraining, and it is true(for most) that training "unhealed" muscle can actually lead to shrinking muscle.

It's easily done. I recently actually added up the calories I consume on an average day and it was less than I estimated it to be. So get him to have a look at his diet As for the routine... not sure what all the exercises are that he's doing on that machine, but my guess is he's not doing squats, deadlifts, rows, military presses IMO if he wants to get big he ought to think a bit more carefully about his training - get a structured routine based mainly on the heavy compounds with free weights, rather than anything and everything on the machine every other day. He'll get nowhere fast that way, and it sounds like he's doing exactly that. Machines can be a useful tool and certainly have their place but I wouldn't rely on them to increase size or strength
