just wondering how i can improve my balance for squats

my quads are stronger than my hams purely because ive been smith squatting for so long and now that im squatting properly i cant get down without bending forwards and raising my heels off the floor

any tips?

take your shoes off, and squat with a weight youre comfortable and stable with to bring up your stabilisers

edit: also how wide is your stance?

I don't think your problem is a result of squatting in a smith machine, more of a problem with technique.

Read the 40 pages worth of squatting info in this ebook - it is the single best piece of squatting literature I have found in terms of technique, and will help you keep your heels on the ground. It's worth it - my squat is now deeper than ever - and stronger than ever thanks to his hints about 'getting out of the hole'!

Stance could be a problem, also try moving the bar lower down your back a bit - this will allow you to get deeper (i think)

this will alter the cg and stop falling forward, are you sitting back into the squat, box squats will help a load here...
