this is a honest question

why do people find drink such an evil that they feel they have to abstain?
Is it self control?
Is it an addiction? If so, what are the positives to the addiction?

I abstain from alcohol as lager tastes like old boots (like when you first tasted it as a kid) and spirits dont rock my boat either. In my later teens (18-21) i was drinking myself pickled but now i am no longer in that frame of mind.

I have had 4 pints this year

with smoking its nicotine, what is the addictive nature of drinking?

I used to think exactly like you do now.
but, to some; me. it gets a grip of you and can't loosen it. There are no positives to any addiction. addictive nature of drinking is being drunk.

My father drinks quite a bit too. Has 4 carling premiers every night after work, a lot more on the weekends. I'm dying for a can now tbh.

this is a honest question

why do people find drink such an evil that they feel they have to abstain?

Varies, as we can see from this thread

If a person has a drink problem then they normally wish to stop when when health problems get too bad or when day to day life starts going wrong (find it hard to work etc). Alternatively, like yourself, people may just abstain because they don't like alcohol or maybe because they find it interferes with their training or their competition diets

quote:

Is it self control?

It becomes a self control issue if the person becomes addicted, but also there can be an element of self control if a person has simply been a social drinker all their lives and then decides to stop. It's hard to break the habit of a lifetime, though obviously it can be done without much trouble if you're not an addict

quote:

Is it an addiction?

Sometimes. People with drink problems are usually addicts. Most people who drink don't become addicts though. Same as most people who use cocaine don't become addicts, etc

quote:

If so, what are the positives to the addiction?

Varies very much from person to person. Usually addictions have no positive sides, however the previous drug use which led to the addiction may have had positives

quote:

with smoking its nicotine, what is the addictive nature of drinking?

Ethanol is the chemical in alcoholic drinks which people become addicted to. It is physically addictive and also (as with all addictive substances) there is usually a psychological aspect to addiction

Mate, I have failed and failed again but it the way you recover from these failures that counts.

The only way you fail is by not starting mate. You can do it i am 100% sure. Have a go and use this thread Wardy i am right behind you m8.

I think the 50 squid is out now as for how can we prove it, we cannot but if somebody is silly enough to lie and want to live with that then crack on.
