Evenin' all

I'm Matt and I've decided to get a little more serious about building my muscles!

History

I first started at the gym in 2004 when i came out of a long-term relationship really over weight (c110kg) and wanted to change myself. I did 2 hours in the gym 3 or 4 times a week doing a lot of cardio and all over weights. Although I lost a lot of body fat (down to 86kg) I didn't really build any muscle (just exposed it a bit more). A new girlfriend came along and i put some weight back on. Then I had a terrible year at work and put a fair bit more back on. That brings me to Christmas 2007 and c100kg.

Now

In Jan this year I decided to get back on it! I cut back a bit on the bad food and changed to a 6 week routine I pulled out of Mens Health. This built into the current routine I'm using where I do 12/10/8 reps over the 3 sets. This has made quite a difference already, but I'd like to build muscle size and strength further.

At the moment I'm 6ft 2" and weigh around 93kg. I believe I'm around 22% bodyfat. So this leaves me with a bit of a problem. I'm confident I have a reasonable capacity to build a bit of muscle so I intend to do a 5x5 routine, but I'm concerned I may end up with the fat obscuring the muscle I'll have worked so hard for. So should i try and burn the fat off before, or can I do both at the same time, or even better will the increased muscle size (and thus calories need) mean my body takes care of that itself?

My gym

At the moment I'm looking to change gyms. I use my work gym first thing in the morning, but unfortunately it's limited in the equipment it has. We have a sufficient range of dumbbells for me to use for the moment (going up to 35kg I think) and I have been using a leg press and a couple of pullies to help. However I think (hope) I'll outgrow this gym quickly, plus having some bars to use would be nice!

Anyhow, I'm looking at this place. Any thoughts?

Other training

And finally i though i should mention the other training I've been doing. I go for a 20 min run twice a week, and I always play roller hockey for 2 hours mid-week :D The later is what I'd like to build up some more muscle for. Better for taking/receiving hits and playing hard! The former is just pain to get my lungs going and burn some fat. wakes me up in the morning too!

Sorry for sticking this all in one thread, but i thought it was better than lots of separate threads everywhere :D

I should also add that I know there is room to cut more crap out of my diet (i'm good during the week, just not at the weekend) and I I am trying to structure it into 5/6 smaller meals (although a family evening meal doesn't help!).
