Our gym doesn't have a dip machine. Therefore am I better off doing close grip bench press or press ups as an alternative? Bearing in mind I'm pretty weak, I'd only be able to press about 40kg

press ups wont really build muscle. Your current strength has little bearing on what exercises you can/cannot do

press ups will build muscle. your body is the resistance. I guess you are going for tricep building so i would suggest cgbp or skull crushers, i use both

yeah skullcrushers are a good exercise for tris, what head do they work? you just need 1-2 for tris in my imo as they are worked thoughroly with normal bench press, also cgbp is very effective just remember to lower the bar just below your nipple, read a story of someone who kept lowering it to their neek for months lol, good luck!
