i don't disagree. whole food does come first and supplements are exactly that- supplements and will only work when you are eating the right foods and doing the right training. At the end of the day, whether it's right or wrong, it works for me. Most say you need 1g protein per kg of bodyweight. Others say to gain you need 1.5-2g protein per kg of bodyweight. Based on my stats, 180g protein daily is 2x what I need. And as I've said, if I'm not gaining with that, then I need to increase portion sizes. But based on 6 meals a day and my proposed diet, I think 180g protein daily is manageable for me. I'm aiming to have a protein supplement for breakfast and post-work-out. I will eat real food for mid-morning, lunch, mid-afternoon and pre-work-out. I've explained why a drinkable protein supplement appeals to me and I'm looking at foods to compare their protein values. Tuna in a sandwich is fine but not on it's own. You've kind of answered my point as taking in 180g protein daily, I'd look to consume 30-35g in suplements twice daily- leaving 110-120g protein daily consumed in real food. I don't need 3 supplements a day as something quick like 2 boiled eggs would give me 34g protein anyway.

I've found blended ones that would last me for 25 days for 3 doses which is why i cut down to 2 doses so now i can look at the protein content rather than the money, still no more than £30 or so per month. Looking for a protein supplement that would give me all the protein I needed in one meal. If I took a supplement that gave me 25g I'd still have to eat protein for that meal.

for the past 2 weeks i have been looking at foods and supplements properly. until i find the right supplement i cannot say i have 100% started the diet as these would be missing. im off shopping tomorrow and will buy what i feel i need for the forthcoming week and thus take in what i can without the supplements. this will still give me 110-120g protein daily- which is roughly 2x my bodyweight. My diet plan got the ok from here so that's sorted now. As for training, i've decided to follow the plan LA Fitness set me on the basis that it's based on strength and endurance. I have little doubt that the plan Daveo set is good for strength but I'm going to measure myself and see if I have made any gain in a month. Then will assess what I do next. It may be that I'm not happy after a month, in which case I will hold my hands up and say you forum posters were generally right. That may not be the case. I'll see how it goes.

I worry more about you replying on advice from LA Fitness than anything else you've said.

I'm sure they have the odd good trainer but, on opinion alone, I'd be very hard pushed to have a decent workout there. From experience many years ago when I did my BAWLA and later on NABBA courses most on the courses were as thick as two short planks and lacked much of anything. LA and the like will not be paying decent enough wages to warrant instructors much over the age of 18 most of whom would be hard pushed to know half of what I do. A few of their one-to-one trainers might be ok but... of course that's just my opinion.

Sorry girish, the reason i asked was to see if you had taken any of the info on board, you obviously havent so much that you havent actually started your "Proper diet and routine" yet, If you are commited to gaining you would have by now. Why arnt you lifting and eating like a horse by now. Dont tell me you want to get "everything sorted before you do", its an excuse. Do you have any inclenation(sp?) of training or are you just asking questions and making excuses why you cant. YOU DONT, IN YOUR CURRENT POSITION NEED TO WORRY ABOUT HOW MUCH PROTEIN YOUR ARE GETTING EACH MEAL. You just need to eat like you mean it, TRAIN, and rest, Whatever you want to make of your training you at least need to make the effort of getting your arse to the gym, fueling yourself and resting. Dont go into the nitty gritty of how much protein your eating in a sitting, this will get you nowhere. Nobody needs this apart from maybe compeating atheletes (of which you are not). Will you just stop asking questions about things that dont matter at your stage and get on with the thing in hand, and thats training and eating everything thats in your grasp (within reason). Yes a whey protein supp will help you and maybe some maltodextrin or dextrose and maybe some creatine but dont worry about figures and amounts. Adjust your thinking. YOU DONT need to even concern yourself about calorie's, protein or carbs, just eat big, get enough protein for your goal's (you know this already) and TRAIN. Its not difficult to understand at ARE level. Please mate take it on board. PLEASE start a journal with your training and diet and im sure people will post with thoughts. Its a good why to get an opinion on things without clogging up the other threds with ****e. It works mate, its been great for me. Tell you what, if you start one i'll keep an eye on it and offer (With my limited knowledge) some encouragement. Up to you?

A nice offer. Good lad. I got someones knickers in a twist yesterday on another forum suggesting they stop focusing on the very small tiny stuff and do enough of the big stuff to make a difference to their training. I think that's where we are here. Gerish needs to leave off the great plan which, while possibly useful, is actually seemingly in the way of any progress at all. When said plan then includes research of which most is BS at best it will turn into ****. Gerish it might seem like people are having a pop but they've all been there and done that. Some are just starting their journey's but are still ahead of where you seem to be. They all wanna help. So get the log up, get training, eat and rest.

You might just be able to get what you want from www.sports-nutrition.net The whey protein they sell is spot on, its £24.99 when you buy 2 or more tubs. You could also try www.discount-supplements.co.uk , they got some 5lb real cheap at £21.99, don't know what the quality is like though.
