tristram -> dumbel rows hurting shoulder (Apr. 14 2008 22:07:33)

since ive started hitting heavy weight on these i seem to get a discomfort in my shoulder.

im pretty sure form is the same. is it possible my shoulder strength has not increased enough with other muscle strength to handle the weight?

beefycol -> RE: dumbel rows hurting shoulder (Apr. 15 2008 10:16:11)

is it hurting your rear shoulder mostly, as doing this excerise works it, you could be stretching the muscle and skin too. i did i got stretch marks round the back off my shoulder.
i concertrate on form manily, if you could post a vid that be good.

Need to be abit more specific about where it hurts to be honest, helps us alittle more.

i would say around the front delt, and more inside rather than out.

Not a good sign.

do you get pain on any other exercises? Has your form changed at all since increasing the weight?

cu3ed -> RE: dumbel rows hurting shoulder (Apr. 15 2008 11:54:05)

Was about to say, if its the front and feel like its sitting "on the bone" thats usually the front of what makes up the rotator cuff, as Drewsky says, can you still bench/row/ do flys ok!?

Just so you know thats the same spot were i have been experiencing pain over the last month 1/2(tho the last 2 weeks ive been back to 100% tho)

ive already had issues with my right shoulder, i mainly get this problem on the left side with the rows.

ive always problems rowing on the left though. usually the weight seems to come in a different line to the right, and i know my left side is also not as strong as the right.

i would say my form is the same. i let the weight touch the floor between each rep.
where should my shoulder be in relation to the weight when its on the floor?

im tempted to dump them for something else because i dont want more shoulder problems!

my left shoulder doesnt have issues with any other exercise.

cu3ed -> RE: dumbel rows hurting shoulder (Apr. 15 2008 14:37:54)

Dump them then mate, can you do BB rows ok?

yep. i actually do bb rows followed by db rows.

though i noticed a guy doing another type of 1 handed row using the cross over cable thingy.

he sort of squats down and pulls it towards him in a rowing motion. might give that a whirl instead.

drewsky -> RE: dumbel rows hurting shoulder (Apr. 17 2008 8:43:54)

Don't.

I'd be tempted to find out what the problem is before writing them off - unilateral (one sided) exercises are very important for long term joint health and performance.

I would get a form check off one of the (better) PT's in the gym or if a private gym the owner or some such. I get the feeling that you elbow will be winging out to the side - clearly there is some form of motor or mechanical problem, most probably some weakness or dysfunction in the rotator cuff, lower traps (less likely) or serratus.

If you correct this you'll get improvements in lots of lifts and keep BOTH your shoulders healthier for longer.

tristram -> RE: dumbel rows hurting shoulder (Apr. 17 2008 10:32:33)

i cant really trust the PTs to know anything about form im afraid.

what if i went back to lighter weight and worked on it?

drewsky -> RE: dumbel rows hurting shoulder (Apr. 18 2008 9:53:33)

Yes I would say moving down to a lighter weight would be better. After all if you are training the target muscle more efficiently what have you lost?

You will also have to think about training the muscles in other ways as well, adding serratus and rotator cuff exercises as well as checking you range of motion etc. There's a lot more to being able to do a row that the ability to row as it were.

Do you see what I mean?

tristram -> RE: dumbel rows hurting shoulder (Apr. 18 2008 10:27:45)

i think so. are you saying other parts of the body help you row?
i would of thought that the act of rowing its self would benefit any muscle etc which helps the movement?

my back work involves db rows, bb rows, pull downs and deadlift. with shoulder work i just stick to over head pressing.

drewsky -> RE: dumbel rows hurting shoulder (Apr. 18 2008 10:35:41)

Yes and no, the muscles are the back but joint moving is the shoulder and there are lots of muscle involved in the function of that joint.

The nervous system controls the firing of the muscle tissue, if smaller muscle groups involved in the joint stability are having problems it will actually switch off the large muscle to defend the body against injury.

Hammering away with the same movement (even at lower weight and better form) you are not training the smaller ones as efficiently as you could, they are your strength and function bottle neck as it were, train them and your lifting will improve. A close analogy is the use of assistance exercises in power lifting.

tristram -> RE: dumbel rows hurting shoulder (Apr. 18 2008 11:12:59)

i take it then i need some other exercise on shoulder day? i just do over head pressing as i thought that was enough!

drewsky -> RE: dumbel rows hurting shoulder (Apr. 18 2008 11:29:49)

There's too much to go into but for some it is, for others it isn't - clearly if you're having problems you may be a candidate for the second group.

As I say there lots to go into with the shoulder you have to balance

Stability
Muscle activation
Muscle strength
Control
Flexibility

etc etc blah blah blah

and there's lots of exercises to help here. It's a minefeild of info actually but you can do a lot worse that read the Neanderthal No More series of articles by this chap. It's a fairly good round up of exercises in a strength trainers context
