Is someone able to build muscle sufficiently who is also into martial arts.

I have been under the impression that high heart rate for long periods = not optimum for muscle maintainence or gain. If this is true how do some fighters achieve great physiques; do they do heavy weight training or is it created by the sport?

Would boxing training like push ups, sprinting, and all other bodyweight type resistance training hinder or deteriorate any muscle gains when combined with a bodybuilding split; basically is this overtraining, seeing as your muscles are hit with the BB split, or can you create a routine based around your martial art training too?
i.e less shoulder work due to lots of punching work which used shoulders a lot, or is this a different kind of training and heavy weight training should never be taken out?

I want to get into fighting and improve fitness but i also love improving my strength/physique with BB type training and eating.

Can both be achieved to a good standard?

Note: I never want to be huge, just 'big and toned', more specifically 16-17 inch arms with proportional legs, chest, slim waist and visible abs

Personally I'd improve my strength with strength training. Keep it simple low reps, add in some circuit work for conditioning, eat enough, eat enough again, and sure you can get muscular and fight.

Me too, as i always see fighters with the kind of physique i'd like, was just curious as to how they did it.

So a lot of fighters do strength training right?

If I was gona get into a fighting sport I'd concentrate on not getting my arse kicked rather than what I looked like! Train and get good at the sport and let the rest take care of itself.

Post a question in training section or fight section. I am sure they'd be some good experienced guys that would help you to taylor your weight training to kick boxing.

Do-able, but would take a long time to get the results you'd want!

I never personally found that boxing and weight training clashed

My brother trains in muay thai amongst other things, and he is muscular too

But, everyone is different

As does this guy

Etc

Plenty of guys in the heavier weight divisions of all fighting sports carry a decent amount of muscle mass

Try it and see mate

You can only do what you can do - the decision as to whether or not to use drugs is another discussion entirely IMO

i'm finding it a hinderance... i'm limited by the techniques i can use for BJJ due to leg size.
More muscle = more energy burned = gas quicker

fighters should never train like bodybuilders, the two training styles to not mix... slow steady reps vs explosive movements.

unless your cardio is top notch, you will gas

quote:

A fighter has no business following a bodybuilding routine. Bodybuilding emphasizes aesthetics. The activity involves posing various muscle groups for a panel of judges. There is no concern for athletic qualities such as speed, power, and endurance. An athlete trains for function. A fighter will not gain points on the judge’s scorecard by crafting a symmetrical pair of pectoral muscles. To compare strength training for a fighter to bodybuilding is like comparing a fresh orange to an artificial apple.

I could do it man, I'm like mystical and sh1t.

Actually, I thought Bruce had a wicked physique and I remember reading an interview with Arnie where he rated his body highly.

As a PWO snack!

Bruce Lee had the body to do what he needed to do, and that's the important thing. Also good to see someone posting a pic of Bruce Lee that has a sense of humor!

Training like a bodybuilder is out, of course. Forget that

But you can carry a decent amount of muscle and fight. You can build muscle with strength training. Look at heavyweight boxers, or even some heavyweight MMA guys. Quite a few are muscular, although I should say that by muscular I do not mean pro bber or strongman muscular, but I do mean more muscular than 90% of people on bodybuilding forums and in gyms across the country

I am personally against carrying much muscle on the legs, but maybe that is just me. A few do manage this and do it well. Jeff Monson springs to mind, for example. He has very thick legs

I think it really just depends on how you carry it. Being muscular can work for some, and not for others
