Ok, so after years of trying to bulk eating everything i can lay my greedy little hands on, i've got no where. And for a few months i have felt really run down and knackered all the time, so decided to go see the doc, had few tests done and apperantly i have a thyroid problem that speeds up my metabalism (spelling??). so what ever i eat all the calories etc etc get burnt up really fast before my body has time to benefit from them So, i am no on these god awfull tablets that slow it all down, So hopefully i should see some bulking going on over next few months.

Hiya ninjauk, I suffer from the same problem, mine was discovered last year - however I have refused to take any form of medication. I can put on weight but I have to work bloody hard at it and if I am ill, the muscle peels off me in days. Now you know what it is though, why don't you look at different diets and changing routines etc that is what I did, knowing what is wrong and working with it is hard. My body craves certain things and unless I give in and eat it, no matter how much I eat, I still have to go eat something else - I have discovered that I can get away with drinking a litre or two of apple or cranberry juice to kick start my body back to normal again. Incidentally because I have refused the medication, they monitor my weight, bloods and metabolic rate and a few other things. Recently as my weight has increased so has my metabolic rate, they are trying to work out if there is a correlation. I found they just shove you on the tablets and forget about you, which I was not going to let happen. Final thought, I went to a specialist and he reckoned that as I got older the thyroid would slow down naturally anyway.

I read that skinny people actually have higher T3 levels then none skinny people. In a study, they fed 1000 extra calories to people(taking into account activity, age etc) for 8 weeks. They all gained weight, but some(who started skinny) gained 1 lb, whilst others gained 9lb. Apparently, T3 levels in skinny people will ramp up to burn off the extra calories taken into the body. Some recommended 4000 calories a day to anyone around 150lb- this is to overcome to extra T3. I think I am a "skinny person", I eat alot and put on little weight. Or maybe its because I'm 16?

If you mean "can you still add muscle with an overactive thyroid" then the answer is yes, see peagreen's post http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/fb.asp?m=2639672

Totally differant now, not 100% sure what has changed apart from age... but now I can get away with about half that.

I know people have issues putting on weight mate but for someone who loves food as much as I do, I'd be happy being just a slim jim if I could eat what I wanted, muscles wouldn't worry me.

If you mean "can you still add muscle with an overactive thyroid" then the answer is yes, see i mean people are saying they can eat so much but they dont put on weight. Does this mean that 3400 calories that they are eatting isnt there calorie surplus, so they need to eat say 4000 calories to add the lean muscle on?
