That's a lovely sentiment.

Who gets to draw the line between laughter and insults? Why do you seem to assume they're mutually exclusive?

When done by teenagers, usually it is.
Some people are good at it, but its rare enough imo.

Might be incorrect, but I've often noticed that lots of other cultures don't seem to have sarcasim, or at least they don't understand it in the same way we do.

I've tried it with lots of foreign people, often speaking their language, and they're scratching their head in confusion.

I think most in the US dont get it, like they have absolutly no clue, and if you do make a sarcastic remark, unless you have canned laughter ready to play after you have said it, they dont know its a joke........or when to laugh.

im pretty sure thats how MASH ended up with canned laughted, it was full of dry wit, but poeple there didnt get it.

i agree its a fine line between laughter and insults, ive been on the recieving end of both situations as have many,i think the tone of what is being said dictates wether or not someone is being sarcastically insulting and what they actually say.
between friends i would say most sarcasm is meant light heartedly.

Interesting that you seem to place the responsibility of interpretation with the person who makes the comment rather than the person that hears it.

i think the person who dictates the insult/laughter has to be the person who is speaking,
as it is aimed to either upset or make the hearer laugh..

I'm very sarcastic and readily enjoy taking the p.iss out of other people.

They do it back mostly so it's all good.
