Hi guys,

My gym has recently bought some spinning bikes and in a couple of weeks I will be starting back training and rowing will be out of the question and running for a couple of weeks due to an inury. So I fancy trying the whole spinning thing.......

My question is that do you rate the spinning or is it just a fad?

Awesome exercise.
Low impact, intensity can be altered simply by increasing the pedal speed or adjusting the resistance.
Variety can be added by way of being seated or standing, hill climbing or sprinting.
Classes can be very motivational if held by a decent instructor with appropriate music.
You can do by yourself, whack on some tunes on your mp3 and alter the workout according to the song playing.

So yes, I rate Spinning. Certainly not a fad - it's here to stay.

(although saying that, if your gym has 'BTS' classes then they can be repetitive having 12 weeks doing essentially the same workout.)

GJH,

My advice would be to try a couple of different instructors as styles of delivery, playlists etc. can vary greatly between classes - mine are excellent BTW*

^^^ Agree.

When I used to teach I had a varied range of music from dance, trance, pop, rock, metal and occasionally classical. Mine were also excellent BTW

The most popular class however, is from a guy who plays in a heavy metal band and his music in his class is of the same genre. I wouldn't have thought the audience would particulary like it but the fact he's such an enthusiastic helps make it so popular.

An energetic, upbeat, enthusiastic instructor can make even a class with bilge from the Top 40 entertaining.

And what's wrong with Spinning to Alpha Beat?

Agree with most of those comments. My gym uses BTS so can empathise with the 12 week cycle (no pun intended). However, different instructors use different CDs so if you are doing more than one a week, mix it up.

I also acknowledge the comment about one instructor being more motivational than another, but I do believe you have to take responsibility and ownership of your own workout, regardless of who is instructing. I have been using spinning as part of my cardio workout for 18 months or so now and it is awesome, but don't get into a comfort zone - do other stuff as well and keep an eye on the power setting rather than gears or RPM - that is the true judge of how hard you are working.

Good luck.
