Hiya people... Just wondering if the fortisip drinks are any good? I kinda get them on prescription due to a health problem, but they contain around 12 grams of protein per shake. Full details of the nutrition are here: Link! Cheers Chris

What reason does your doctor prescribe them for? From a clinical point of view yes they are 'good'

Just due to an illness that limits my absorbtion of certain things, n primarily as a boost for me really... I kinda thought they might be usefull for weight training though due to the high protein content,

If you have an illness (what illness?) that reduces your absorption of certain nutrients (which nutrients?), you need more of those nutrients. That's what Fortisip is for. It's supplementing your diet. What are you trying to achieve?

Well i suffer from chrons disease atm, although im kinda unsure what nutrients i struggle with absorbing. Im just trying to suppliment myself with the extra protein mainly as i get fortisips for free, and therefor thought they cud be used along side regular protein suppliments

I'm assuming you're having a relapse at the moment, in whaich case simply try to consume whatever you can - Fortisips will be fine As an aside, whey protein is often well tolerated in Crohns, especially whey isolate. This is because it's naturally semi-elemental (this mean pre-digested), meaning that it's made up of short chain peptides which are more readily absorbed by both mechanisms of absorption in the intestine.

James, is the issue of absorption of semi/elimental peptides different to that of inducing remission with sip feeds? Then is the issue of absorption and subsequent nutritional status being overlooked by clinicians?

Then is the issue of absorption and subsequent nutritional status being overlooked by clinicians? Yes it's a different issue. Have a read of this short piece I wrote here: http://www.muscletalk.co.uk/newsletter-0303.aspx - you'll see that there are two different mecahanisms for absorbing proteins, one as single amino acids only, one as short chain peptides. Using a semi-elemental type food means that you can utilise both and quickly Some sip feeds do actually have some semi-elemental macrnutrients, even if they arn't marketed as 'semi-elemental' feeds I'm not sure if the issue is being overlooked as I haven't worked clinically for several years, but I certainly take it into account. Stands to reason really, moreso in Crohns than colitis as there maybe some small intestine involvement.

Thanks James. I've not heard the subject breached by any dietitians yet (just finished final year of degree). I'll try and remember to bring it up the next time I encounter a gastro dietitian, or if I'm feeling really motivated I might do a little literature search.
