Ive never done it but always said i will. Done snowdonia and the peak district many many times and will do Ben Nevis one day. My bro has done it years ago and said its very long and boring but it just has to be done.

I went up Scafell Pike in early January (on my own ) and didn't use the tourist route/path, i went up the steep side! I had a fantastic time. As i was on my own it was dead quiet, and due to being in the clouds with poor visibility, it felt like i was in heaven. You will definetely need to have a compass/map and be able to use both well, as i've attached a couple of photos below and as you can see the visibility when i went up Scafell Pike was about 10 feet I met a guy on the summit (he's in the red jacket) and he was mountain rescue for Wasdale! We went back down together (he wanted to stick to a track on the way down ), and asked what route i took, i told him and pointed over, he couldn't believe i was so stupid and said that is their 'Black Spot' and they have more callouts for that area than anywhere else! You will really enjoy it, i had such a great sense of achievement, as the mountain rescure guy told me i had done the hardest route, on the tallest mountain in England, in the worst conditions.....and i lived to tell the tale (his words) Hope these photos give you a tast for the adventure - you'll love it! I climbed Ben Nevis aged 5 and it was easy, very enjoyable too. I did Scafell Pike a few days later and the visibility like Soni mentioned was appaling. We got to the summit and fog was literally blinding, somehow we descended down another way and had to get do a 8 foot drop with a stream running down, ended up walking 20 miles around to a nearby pub

I did the three peaks in october, had awful visability on ben nevis but the walk itself is easy enough. We managed to do it in 4 and a half hours which is pretty quick going, expect to do it in about 5 maybe 6 hours if your going at a leisurely pace. Its really not that hard a walk just dull.

Unless you do it in bleak mid-winter there's likely to be a fairly large 'procession' of walkers going up the path to the summit. It really is just a long hard walk, not a climb in any sense of the word, but get a good guide book, map and compass and learn how to use them - it's really very easy and will add to your enjoyment. Also plan for quick changes in the weather, whatever time of year - it can get very cold, wet and miserable especially if you get held up with a sprained ankle, or worse! Hope you get a clear day like jon of manchester. Sam

As people said it's more of a walk/scramble in places but in the main it's like going up some long stairs which will be hard in heavy kit. Getting drunk the day before at the hotel wasn't the brightest of ideas either. We did it for charity through work so we were made to wear boots but if I was to do it again I'd deffo where trainers. We did it in roughly 23:30 so it was close but our "team leader" made us all wait at Scarfell Pike so we wasn't passing the farm too early. We didn't make any noise anyway but there you go, can not remember how much time we wasted. You can run down Snowdon at the end, I actually found it easier on my knee's to bound down rather than walk... it was more like a controled fall!!!! If you are driving make sure they can get there kit off and get in the car as fast as you can so you can get going to the next mountain.
