what is the situation if you own a camper van, can you pull up on the side of the road, say a lay by, to bed down for the night, then crack a few tins and get sloshed, dont want to get done for drunk in charge of a vehicle, is this what would happen,or are there ways round it .thanks.

its a vechicle and if parked in public (i.e not on private land) then you are in charge of it, therefore IMO you'd get done if you were over the limit.

Why not park it up on a campsite instead ?

Nicked 100%,mate of mine had a VDUB camper, pulled in a long laybay the long term truckers ones, for an overnight rest, decided to have a few cans and then set off the next PM.
Police came knocked to see whats ,what, smelt his breath requested a Breath test,he tried to tell them he had stopped,no keys in ignition, handbrake on ,blinds down, they foudn him over the limit and nicked him

May of course be down to the copper, worst bit is 5days later he left the camper in a carpark, went for a drink or 5,was merry but able, coming back to the camper figured as the car park had emptied he would move it 8 feet to be under street light for safety,he got in moved it,turned it all off and setteled down,a copper knocks again and same happens, sad bit is they watched him move it,clearly knew he had no intention to drive it on the roads and was in a carpark but still did him, gutter

If you have the keys you are classed as incharge of the vehicle. Hide the keys somewhere outside under the bushes where no one will find em and you might get away with it... i did

Cannot drive a car without any keys. Know a guy who would drive to Southampton to do this. Park in a multistorey. Hid his keys a few parking bays away.

we got pissed in the car, gave the keys to the passenger, this was at the back of some flats but still on a road, and the police came as the passenger was making too much noise, but when they got there basically said keep the noise down, have fun and drove off

I guess the answer will never be uniform (no pun intended) Coppers are people, no copper knows every law. There's every chance he didn't know any different!

but i wouldnt recommend sleeping in a car even when pissed...it is so uncomfortable!

ive done it before with my mate and 2 girls, and because i have a huge boot, i put the back seats down and you can lay like a bed. I also bought 2 quilts and pillows, but still wasnt very comfy
