In the context of this famous speech from the movie 'Wall Street'?

Do you agree with the sentiments shared here by Gordon Gekko?

quote:

The point is, ladies and gentleman, that greed -- for lack of a better word -- is good.

Greed is right.

Greed works.

Greed clarifies, cuts through, and captures the essence of the evolutionary spirit.

Greed, in all of its forms -- greed for life, for money, for love, knowledge -- has marked the upward surge of mankind.

Greed is a strong and selfish desire for something

So I suppose it could be good or bad

But generally it's not good

Web definition of greed:

Excessive desire to acquire or possess more (especially more material wealth) than one needs or deserves.

I think the deserves aspect is somewhat subjective, who determines that??

Otherwise greed could be a tool to achieve an aim. I'd like a big house, big TV, more cars, nice things. I don't need them. My job could be the catalyst to achieve that. So to achieve that end product, I'll work hard.

Like most things, it can be used for good or bad.

In a strange way, bb'ing requires a level of greed. No-one needs to be bigger!!

for me the greed I hate is the rich kid greed where they are greedy for flashy material stuff from their parents and feel they deserve it and have done something to deserve it apart from being born

everyone's a bit greedy I suppose, I know I am, with food especially

I think drive and determination is a very good thing which results in positivity.
I think greed is a highly motivational thing but ultimately requires ruthlessness, underhandedness and a lack of conscience which results in negativity

Its a very long winded thing to get into right now, but I given a lot of thought to it before in the context of comparing communisim and capitalisim & seeing how greed always rears its ugly head regardless of the system.
Its fascinating to talk to elderly people who lived in the communist times, when they tell you about some of the ingenius methods that greedy people came up with to get around the system.

It doesn't have to be in political situations or even megalomaniac financial circles.
Think about the fraudsters who are claiming disablity benefit and social welfare, have no jobs and live off the taxpayer.
That is a good example of greed resulting in negativity.

Enough waffle from me.

Greed is an interesting human trait. It's interesting to ask whether it's provoked by culture or society or evolution, etc.

Game theorists test competitive and co-operative behaviour using gaming scenarios that expose conflicts between morality and self-interest.

Some findings show that greed is a significant behavioural dimension of Anti-Social Personality Disorder.
