Mines a fitness first so mainly a fitness oriantated place but we still get people in who have stood on stage with the likes of ronnie coleman, if it's good enough for them it's good enough for me.
It's good because it's a nice environment, some BBer's a power lifter or 2, a few footballers and a few olypic athletes, it's reletevly clean and good kit but with some people with a hardcore work ethic.
Not a bad balance.

mines a FF too and exactly the same

its got its fair share of hardcore trainers its the best equipped gym in the area

Mines an LA fitness near a uni. Get lots of honeys in which is a bonus, and lots of skinny lad students so makes me feel bigger. lol

I'd prefer a more hardcore gym tho as I reckon I would progress better around guys who are serious about it.

I train at a gym thats luckily half and half kinda. Although the majority of people there are skinny guys who dont know what they're doing or girls who talk the whole time, there are quite a few hardcore guys there so manage to create a decent atmosphere when we're all there, get some looks though..
Have always found that pure hardcore gyms are best when it comes to keeping motivation up and they tend to have all the equipment you want as well then..Sometimes gota put up with some idiots though

Because of the cost normally mate, also some of these pretty orange juicy places don't like the bb'er type in there. Also they don't normally have large than 25-30kg dumbells.

i like these kind of gyms if i can train with a mate, but on my own id much prefer the luxuries of a commercial gym.. why do so many people not like them?

A 40kg dumbell is still a 40kg dumbell no matter where you lift it, I pay no attention to anything in the gym, iPod on and training cracked, job done

Itching to get back amongst it!

Exactly, I agree entirely
Is hadecore internal or external
IMHO and not knocking anyone for it... to many people worry about how hardcore they are going to look and not enough about what they are actually doing - it hinders there gains.
Like, some people who are only lifting for size refuse to use straps... when they could probably add another 10kg to each lift with them on but they don't want to as it's not the in thing.
As said, not knocking them - I'm pro choice but I think some of us contribute to the situation with peer pressure - all be it "virtual"

As most are a complete waste of time and are no better than an old universal machine. There are exceptions but these tend to be machines that have been around for a while anyway ie hammer strength and old nautalus stuff. In fact the old universal bench press station felt just as good, if not better, than many a 1,000 quid isolateral chest presses machine malarky I have used over the years!

If you carn't get the job done with a barbbell you aint gona get it done with the latest Life Fitness range!

This is not rant agaisnt machines per se, rather just because it's new and shiny means nought!!

I prefer trainng around people who are bigger. I'm not intimidated at all. In fact, being among people who work hard at their goals is motivational. A motivational tool is to surround yourself with people you want to be like. There was plenty of bigger guys in my old gym. Good lads, lots of banter. They also watched out for you if you didn't have a spotter.

By being the biggest guy, complacancy can kick in, like you've 'got there' and achieved all your goals. Almost ego grooming. Bigger people are nothing to be afraid of. They're just people at a different stage to you. Treat them as a font of knowledge. Something they do clearly works. It may be worth learning. Most people who are passionate and dedicated, like talking about what they do, especially in terms of achievement.

I've started at a new gym. It's decked out with up to the minute cybex stuff which is multi-hinged, so doesn't restrict your range of movements. I just prefer working with oly bars and free weights. Other gyms I looked at had miniscule free weights sections. I was informed by an ex member of Cannnons staff, the only large chain in Yeovil, the maximum dumbell is 20 kgs. No oly bars at all. Yet rows upon rows of running machines, bikes and rowers. Not for me. So a gym that could be classed as 'hardcore' is what I prefer. Though I think calling them weight lifting orientated would be more appropriate.

*Rats, hit reply instead of fast reply. In response to the OP, not Ian!*

Pagan can keep his outside bog.
I like my air conditioned 'Health Club'.
Benches, squat rack, space to deadlift and they don't mind if you use chalk sensibly.
Loads of machines- Smith, lat pull, cables, low row etc
Db's only go up to 50kgs though so a couple of guys are having a go at management about getting those upped.
The big plus for me is the cardio facilities though.
If I didn't have telly to watch while doing cardio then burning calories would all be down to walking the dog.
Oh, and then there's the spa, steam room and sauna.
The 20m pool is fine to take the kids to and we can stop for a snack at the cafe/ bar before we go home.
Down side- it's forty quid a month

top gym mate.

re: the fitness vs. old style gyms...I think it'd be nice if you could get a modern gym, with heating, that had the same atmosphere as an old style gym but there just isn't many about.

i think the best mix would be old, ****ty equipment, and a nice heated / air-conditioned building :)

I train at home, but I am starting to miss a decent gym

I've never liked the commercial fitness places. Never felt like I fit in at those posh places

thats why i like them, as im not the smallest, but one of the biggest as most of the people train for good health and do alot of cardio rather than bb'ing

You've answered your own question. You are a big fish in a small pond. Come to a big pond and you'd become a small fish. Those that like the 'big ponds' have ambition to big fish.

As it were....

That might be true but in Fitness type gyms it'd be the biggest dumbbell they had. Ours go heavier.

Most hardcore (rundown) gym - TOP GYM in Horden near Peterlee (Outside Sunderland) it was £3 a week or £1 a session. and that was 2004. Eddie Ellwood trained there back in the day.

Best Gym - Powerhouse Gym, ridgefield CT, USA, trained there for 6 mths.

Virgin and the like are gay - what the hell am i going to do with 40kg MAX dumbells!!!!

Fish only grow to the size of the tank they are in, so if you want to get bigger you have to go to a bigger tank. its like playing a racket sport against someone who is rubbish, yeh u will win, but you will never get better unless you play better people.

30kg dumbbells, no squat racks and all the machines there have stupidly light weight stacks!
