ORIGINAL: Griff87 Hi guys IIRC the problem with lucozade and other such sugar containing drinks is that your body carefully regulates your blood sugar level, so if you have an addition of fast release carbs the body releases insulin to counteract this and lowers blood sugar to a level lower than you started with. So then you feel tired and fatigued, this will only affect you if you have long gym sessions tho as it takes quite a while to kick in. Its called reactive hypoglycemia if I remember right.. I dont drink sugary containing drinks while training for this reason, but it may affect different people differently... HTH Sean totally wrong. No you are totally wrong UJ. People that are afflicted by reactive hypo can get that from fast carbs. However it kicks in quickly if you have had nowt to eat and have an empty stomach or if you have a full stomach or even something in there reactive hypo may manifest in a different timeframe No. you are wrong! He never mentioned people that are AFFLICTED by REACTIVE HYPO(and I'm talking the medical condition). He was talking in general to ALL READERS. So If Gerrard, Lance Armstrong, etc..... take 'sports drinks' during exercise/competition; why don't they all fall down on the floor with fatigue/tiredness caused by reactive hypo to their sports drink? You can all try it yourself in your next workout. Warm up. start your workout, drink a bottle of lucozade sport during the entire workout ie small mouthful at the end of your sets or different bodyparts (squats, bench, etc) all report back if you feel more energy, about the same, or even more shattered than normal due to you consuming a 500ml bottle of Lucozade Sport during your 90 min workout.

Looks to me like he was simply describing the effects of reactive hypo and what to look for in himself. Stop splitting hairs and contribute positively for once rather than badger on. Lifting weights is very different glycogen wise then cycling intensely for hours on end

Lifting weights is very different glycogen wise then cycling intensely for hours on end Why don't we ask him what he meant? Perhaps that will clarify things-and the punters on here can carry their own test by drinking 500ml of Lucozade Sport DURING their 90 min weights workout. They can then report back how they all collapsed or not, as the case may be, with reactive hypo.

Are you saying that ingesting 500ml of lucozade sport DURING your 'typical' 90 min workout(ie having a sipp every so often )causes you to feel MORE FATIGUED than you would normally? And are you saying everyone(or 90% of the punters) would feel the same thing? ie worse??

Improved immune response, increased muscle mass, etc. Yet another crass generalisation, jog on

No i dont read between the lines. This isnt personal so why make out it is? If you cant debate factually and sensibly admit youre wrong and move on

HTH It doesn't appear he suffers from reactive hypo; he appears to have read about, so that's why he doesn't consume a sports drink during exercise; kind of like reading about crashing a car at 100mph, then deciding to refrain from doing it yourself. perhaps he could confirm one way or the other? Not during workouts, but when i play sports or doing cardio yeah. I use Viper to recover after cardio and sometimes after workouts. I find for me it works brilliantly, sometimes i go and squeeze another evening session in if i have the time!

I drink Lucozade Sport while working out, but as I'm trying to build I'm not sure this is a great idea as I should be getting my energy from food instead perhaps?

But some people who do serious volume and high intensity will find it useful

i really crave sweet drink while training, water doesnt seem to hit the spot. i usually drink fruit juice, even though evidence says there are better options, i crave for fruit juice, not dextrose... in reply to the swearting thing, everyone dweats while trainig, but i am not exactly pouring with it as say compared to playing football for 90 minutes... electrolyte is a but pointless, most studies say its not worth taking unless you are really doing huse amounts of cardio, just another way of making $$$
